Is Coronavirus affecting your travel plans?

There’s a firefighter who tested positive in a nearby county to me just earlier. As a result, more than 50 firefighters are now quarantined awaiting test results. Now, who’s going to respond to 911 calls?

I’ve been repeating this, but we all need to think of the bigger picture to try flattening the incidence curve so there is no surge in cases.

New York bans most gatherings of more than 500 people. Broadway will go dark.
Broadway will go dark for at least a month beginning Thursday, after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York announced restrictions on public gatherings in an extraordinary step to fight the growing outbreak of the coronavirus.

The governor’s decision to limit gatherings of more than 500 people is a blow one of the crown jewels of the city’s tourist trade, its theater industry. Last season, the industry drew 14.8 million patrons and grossed $1.8 billion.

All 41 Broadway theaters have at least 500 seats, and most have more than 1,000.

The restrictions were announced just hours after other cultural institutions including the Metropolitan Museum, the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall announced that they would be suspending visits and performances.

UPDATE (3/12/20): California governor Gavin Newsom announced in a press conference that the state’s executive order against mass gatherings will not including casinos, theaters, and theme parks, such as Disneyland.

But that’s the state, not sure about an Anaheim ban
That is stupid, have the spine to do it all Like NYC. Now people will just crowd to those exempt places...

Too much money at stake and if I was a betting man, I would say no. Disney if they were to do it, would've by now
NY Gov. Cumo on tv right now and is keeping Broadway shows open. Kinda get the point. Too big to fail

NY is not all-in either. Besides hospitals, schools and mass transit are exempt. Yes, kids fare better.....with recovery to symptoms. Does not mean they aren’t carriers who can take the virus back home to their family.

BTW, I’d recommend stocking up on a product called Cold-Eeze or any other generic brand that contains Zincum Gluconicum. It helps to lessen minor cold and flu symptoms (not eliminate it). Unfortunately, it’s one of those things that’s been empty recently from retail shelves and online due to people hoarding.

Yeah they just closed CBS building which is acrossed from my husband's job bc 2 tested positive. Personally I think NY should have been doing a lot more sooner, and stronger measures. Seems they are just now starting. Even then its pretty lax bc they bring in the National Guard to New Rochelle, where this all started and the highest cases in Westchester County, set up a 1 mile radius containment zone they call it, but you are able to come and go.

Can someone tell me what areas of Florida are affected? I did hear Tampa but where else? Thanks

From what I've read, Covid-19 is the illness caused by the coronavirus. Not all people who test positive for coronavirus will develop Covid-19.
Not sure about the second part, but you are correct. The disease is called COVID-19. The virus is called SARS-CoV-2 . More info:

Naming the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the virus that causes it

Viruses, and the diseases they cause, often have different names. For example, HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. People often know the name of a disease, such as measles, but not the name of the virus that causes it (rubeola).

There are different processes, and purposes, for naming viruses and diseases.

Viruses are named based on their genetic structure to facilitate the development of diagnostic tests, vaccines and medicines. Virologists and the wider scientific community do this work, so viruses are named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV).

Diseases are named to enable discussion on disease prevention, spread, transmissibility, severity and treatment. Human disease preparedness and response is WHO’s role, so diseases are officially named by WHO in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

ICTV announced “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)” as the name of the new virus on 11 February 2020. This name was chosen because the virus is genetically related to the coronavirus responsible for the SARS outbreak of 2003. While related, the two viruses are different.

WHO announced “COVID-19” as the name of this new disease on 11 February 2020, following guidelines previously developed with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

That is correct. This virus causing COVID-19 illness is a strain of many in the coronavirus family. The virus name is SARS-Cov-2. Some people will test positive but be asymptomatic.
As of now, nothing that significantly confirms one way or other whether an asymptomatic patient can still transmit the disease.

BTW, for those in NorCal, my family/friends who work in hospitals throughout the Bay Area are suggesting to keep children home from school if not necessary, even if the school has yet to call it off. Of course, some doctors may think differently just like all of us here.

Disneyland is closing 3/14-3/31.

Gotta think we'll be seeing a similar announcement from Disney World soon.

Now that it’s official with DL, 100% WDW is closing soon as well. FL has over 30 cases as of now, which at the trajectory US is on, will be over 100 next week.

Hopefully, no one is questioning an overreaction or sensationalism to this virus any longer. It wasn’t the media or other misconception that made Italy into what it is now.

A lot of people in the ‘08 recession also had a hard time accepting and acknowledging how big of a problem things can become.

I've been planning on taking 18 employees to a huge convention for over a year now- it starts next week. it hasn't been canceled and we are looking forward to it! No one has expressed interest in canceling, although we've extended that offer to them. They are all ready to go-
I saw an interesting story out of Boston yesterday. The headquarters of the biomedical company Biogen is in Cambridge, MA -- either on the campus of MIT, or immediately across the street. They had what was described as a "large employee meeting" and apparently brought a lot of folks in from all over for the meeting.

Massachusetts has 90 COVID-19 cases. 70 of them are linked directly to the Biogen meeting, according to news reports!

I don’t expect a WDW closure for at least a couple weeks. For one thing, there are fewer cases in Florida and specifically Orlando. DL didn’t close until Anaheim banned large gatherings. I would expect something similar here. Plus, if possible, I think Disney would prefer to stagger the closures from a financial standpoint.

So I am preparing for an April closure. I have a trip booked in May, and earlier today (prior to the DL announcement) I booked a backup reservation for June as a “just in case”. I hope I get to go in May for F&G and better weather, but I am prepared either way.

If only . . .

Just cancelled my flight home and am going to drive starting Monday. I would rather have the control of the situation of being able to drive then all of the not so fun variables of flying at the moment. And with classes cancelled/gone online I don't have as much pressure to stay at my place in CO.

Looks like Washington state beat us (CA) to the punch. All schools are closed in WA until end of April.

Edit: That’s fast. Now all schools in Ohio and Maryland.

Our schools in South Florida are remaining open for now. There was talk of moving Spring Break up a week to this Monday and making it two weeks instead of one, but that didn't happen.

We have a crazy list of stuff that is up in the air:
  • Spring Break, third week of March
  • Wife's retirement last week of March
  • Grad Bash trip to Universal first week of April
  • Key West trip with Aunt and Uncle second week of April
  • Prom 3rd week of May
  • High School Graduation 4th week of May (with elderly sick relatives scheduled to attend)
  • College orientation first week of June
  • Two week Alaska vacation last two weeks of June
Everything is on for now, but I doubt that anything but Spring Break and retirement will actually happen.
