Is Coronavirus affecting your travel plans?

I've lost track of which cruise ship is which, and briefly looked back here but couldn't find which we were talking about, but this one in Japan is not doing too great, with 136 passengers having tested positive.

It will be interesting in years to come to understand how they think these transmissions occurred. Was it in the shared spaces? The bathrooms? Utensils at the food bars? Sort of like norovirus, it seems like it was fairly easily transmissible.

We have to get better at both protecting others when we're sick, and protecting ourselves when others are sick. Footage of people deliberately infecting spaces was absolutely horrifying! Sick world we live in.

I feel for all those quarantined on the ships. I would personally have a very difficult time eating any prepared food. I’d be so worried about transmission. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot they can do about it. That would give me so much anxiety.

And OMG, I saw the video of someone in China, presumably infected, spitting on the elevator buttons. Why would someone do that?!

I think they're starting to re-think their strategy on that cruise ship. The problem is the incubation period makes it very difficult to know when people got infected in the first place...did they get infected 2 days ago or 2 weeks ago?

Right. And it will be different for everyone even if they were infected the same day. We found this out when my mother and daughter ate something that made them both sick but exhibited symptoms a full week apart. There it’s all over the place as far as contamination and exhibiting symptoms. For some it might be two weeks, but for others it could be one, three, or who knows.

They also haven't determined (as far as I know) whether people can infect others if they haven't shown symptoms themselves yet, that's a big question

They thought this was possible based on one of the cases in Germany. However, I think they went back and something was lost in translation and the person who said they did not have any symptoms really said that they did not have specific Coronavirus symptoms, but rather that they were just feeling generally unwell (like the start of the flu or the Coronavirus). This was in the news last week.

I am confused by the quarantine process with the Diamond Princess. I keep reading that they are scheduled to be in quarantine until Feb. 19th. But they keep confirming new cases on board. So shouldn't the quarantine be 2 weeks from the last new diagnosis? (I know-that would really, really suck for those on board though.) But, otherwise, won't many, may people still be potentially contagious once they got off Feb 19th?

There was an article in the NYT with the late whistleblower who died a few days ago. He said the woman he thought he caught it from didn’t appear to be symptomatic yet. So I’m wondering if we’re going to be hearing soon that it can be spread even without the symptoms.

I think at least up until this recent batch that tested positive overnight. All the cases were coming from a group that they were monitoring closely and had tested. So I’m guessing they must have had closer contact with patient zero. Who isnt currently on the cruise since he disembarked in Hong Kong 5 days into the cruise. So not extending makes sense since the incubation is based on encounter with that patient and not someone on board I believe. Will see if that changes though with these new cases.

I don't know. My guess? If they've been basically stuck in their rooms, they're probably ok? I hate to say this, but this cruise may be the best chance yet of determining how it's spreading.

Things are changing daily and this article is 3 days old so may not be current. But it says the timeline is reset for those in contact with new infections.

"The coronavirus quarantine that has kept some 3,700 people aboard the cruise ship is set to end on Feb. 19. However, for "close contacts" of infected passengers, the quarantine will be extended 14 days from the last contact with a confirmed case, according to the WHO. "

I have hear that it will be at least until the 19th. I have taken this to be it could go longer depending on what happens.

Other viruses can infect before symptoms appear. I would presume this one can too. Take chicken pox, for example:

How is chickenpox spread?
Chickenpox is very easy to catch (it's highly contagious).

The chickenpox virus spreads through the air (by coughing and sneezing) and by direct contact with mucus, saliva, or liquid from blisters. You can catch the chickenpox virus from touching clothing or other objects that have the blister liquid on them.

The incubation period is the time from when your child comes into contact with a person with chickenpox, to when the first symptoms appear. The incubation period for chickenpox is usually 14 to 16 days but can range from 10 to 21 days.

A child is infectious 1-2 days before they get the rash until all the blisters have dried up. This usually takes 5 to 7 days.

Are they absolutely sure that the droplets can't spread through air ventilation systems?

We are hesitant to make certain travel plans for summer because of this virus. We’ve already crosses cruising off our list for now. We aren’t sure if theme parks are going to be impacted should this virus surface more in the US. I heard the Disney parks in Asia are shut down.

Only partially right there. Tokyo Disney is still operating. China's parks, however, are not.

I'm starting to move to that camp in cruising. My friend and I were planning a cruise in the summer. And while I'm not entirely worried about getting sick all of the other unknown variables thanks to the virus that's making me think we need to have a serious talk in two weeks about whether or not it might be better to switch the cruise part of the trip to a three-day adventure in Orlando since I can swap it for a hotel stay.

DH and I usually do a cruise in the fall, but I'm holding off on booking it until a bit later in the year. It's no big deal if we decide not to go. We've just decided that it's best to keep any eye on things. I have a WDW trip planned for late summer. As of right now I don't have any plans to cancel and will continue to make my dining reservations, BBB, etc., but if there's a big outbreak in Florida around that time I wouldn't hesitate to cancel.

This is where we are too. We are not changing plans as of right now but will keep an eye on things.

Today I read that the UK case #3 who infected +11 people didn't have any symptoms... Also a new study has shown that the quarantine time maybe 24 days rather than 14 days and that's why 2 Japanese resulted negative and then positive
