What is 1 unpopular opinion on Travel you have?

The food at Fisherman's wharf was nothing special.
Where did you go?
Bubba Gump's, Applebee's.
(bang bang bang bang) That's the sound of my head banging on the counter.

Yes!!! Our friends recently went to Seattle to visit family....their local family members took them to Red Robin!!! They are too polite to say anything but really wanted to try something local and not something we can go to anytime.

here in Ireland and UK cheap package holidays to the coast of Portugal, Spain, Spanish Islands and Canary Islands are sooooo popular, for all ages. The usual package is cheap charter flights and accommodation in a purpose built resort at the coast. Most times the resorts are at the edge or outside the town or village. Most places have food and drinks included and there is very little contact with the locals. Everyone just stays in the resort bars and restaurants. In alot of the resorts there is a large "ex pat " community of English speakers from UK and Ireland. They would be similar to the snowbirds who move to Florida. They run many of the bars and restaurants, serving food and drink from UK and Ireland.

For the 20 somethings its a 10 day beach holiday with the friends, out all night in bars and clubs, sleep all day at the pool and beach, repeat for 10 days.

For the families, its all day at the beach and pool, afternoons evenings in the bars and restaurants, then once the kids are in bed, late nights drinking at the apartment with other parents. Repeat for 10 days

This type of holiday has never appealed to me. When I tell people I have never been on a beach holiday they are amazed. I cant think of anything more boring. To fly to a different country but never interact with the locals and never leave the purpose built resort and eat the same food as you would at home and spent every night in a bar , drinking the same brands of alcohol as you would at home, and getting mad drunk every night and then sleeping off the hangover the next day by the pool is just so ugh to me.

But right now thousand of UK and Irish people are doing just that. And thats the highlight of their year. For me no way would you ever see me on that type of a holiday.

We once accidentally vacationed in one of those Spanish towns full of UK expats.
I knew the general region from 20 years earlier and we just wanted a little Spanish town where we could take explore the area----found a rental house available and arrived into a town with almost no Spaniards and a TON of Brits. It felt so strange

Well I guess not popular here, it sure about the general public but given my personal choice, I would take a week at the beach over WDW for vacation any day.

WDW and Universal are great places to visit but just don’t see it as a vacation. The beach, the mountains, the river on a houseboat, a cabin at the lake—all relaxing and wonderful vacations with the beach being my favorite.

Not a fan of the Outer Banks

May I ask why, just so I can determine whether I'd like it or not? We've thought of taking a trip there someday. Did you find it boring, or not like the beaches there maybe?

"Every City Has its problems" - Yes but some much worse than others, don't make excuses not every city is nice and there's no need to sugar coat it, you can say a place sucks but has good attractions.

I think that's why I like variety.

I call WDW and Universal def. a vacation. But I love my beach vacations, the shorter lake weekends, the educational/history trips, the road trips, the B&B trips in the past, etc.

Not only do I love to fly I LOVE airports. The sound of suitcase wheels rolling on the floor gets me going!!!!

I'm with you on that. However, I also hate to leave my family when I travel for work or hobby, so airports are both super sad (when I'm leaving) and super happy (when I'm coming home) for me.

I love airports too. The whole security process stresses me the hell out and being stuck in an uncomfortable airplane seat for hours on end is miserable, but rolling my suitcase through the crowds with a coffee in hand? That’s the sweet spot. :teeth:

I don't believe in restful vacations. Beaches are boring. If I'm not exhausted physically (though perhaps not mentally) at the end of a vacation, I feel I'm doing it wrong.

Something which I've come to find is considered weird for the Disboards - I don't think Disney is necessarily a "family" vacation. I don't feel obligated to spend all my time with my kid while at Disney. I'm happy to put her in a kid's club for a few hours (which she loves, by the way) and go have a nice dinner. It's not her vacation, it's my vacation, and she should be darn happy I let her come along.

The thing is if you are "old time Seattle," Red Robin is local. When we were in college at the University of Washington, DH and I used to eat at the original one which was just across University Bridge, the one that started out as a tavern frequently. They tore it down a few years ago now, put up apartments I think.

Not that there aren't newer local places worth trying. But if you don't know Red Robin history it seems more annoying.

I despise travel to a big city. San Antonio was horrible in May.
I would have a root canal before I would consider a cruise. Never been, never will.
WDW no longer holds my interest.

I don't think that's an unpopular opinion.

Why not?

I'm not sure I can really explain it. I just have no desire to travel to other countries when I haven't really spent enough time travelling around my own. There is nowhere I really want to see outside of the US so I just don't think I'll ever spend the time and/or money travelling outside the United States.

I don't like guided tours. Not even the self-guided audio tours. I might be missing out on some information, but I prefer to go at my own pace. The guided tours I've been on seem to linger on things I find boring and rush past the areas I'd like to spend more time at.

For me it depends on the particular place and the type of tours.

Just a few example:

Salem, MA cemetary/foot tour---no way would I have wanted a walking tour of that. We spent hours alone in the cemetary just pouring over the history there. On the other hand the trolleyhop on/hop off tour (which I'm not normally a fan of doing) in Salem gave us a lot of good history, respite for our feet, and out to places that we probably wouldn't have explored on our own.

Vegas Neon Boneyard tour---That tour was amazing. We went at night and our tour guide had such wealth of information, humor and sparked a lot of interest in the folks. She stopped, gave ample time for photos too.

US Capitol Building tour done by a staff member of our State Rep---no way would we have gotten the access to places (for instance going underneath through utilidoors and House and Senate rooms) nor the wealth of information we got.

9/11 museum---self-guided audio tour (downloading the app and listening to it with headphones/earbuds) was the best. You may think a guided tour would be better but IMO to truly appreciate what occurred before, during and after the horrific event going at your own pace, allowing self-reflection was a better choice.
