But I Don't Like Peas and Mushrooms! An Aug. '16 Dining Report *updated 10/13 Wrap It Up!*

Well, for never writing a dining report before, you're doing an awesome job! Loving it & can't wait to read more!

I'm late to the party as usual, but great report! My husband can't believe I would ever want to do an adults only trip, but I think some day it would be amazing! Loving the review so far!

My DH is going to *love* that coconut white chocolate ice cream. Those are his 2 favorite flavors!
It was delicious! I want to try more flavors there but it's going to be hard not to get that again.....

Your drinks sound and look so good! unfortunately heat and alcohol do not mix well for me so I had to forgo. Next time will most definitely NOT be in late spring/summer.

You absolutely must! I love their Oooey Gooey Butter Cake and Salted Crack Caramel flavors. And now I'm wondering why I didn't make a trip to the shop when I was last in Brooklyn :confused3
Yes you need to make sure your next WDW trip is during a cooler month! It makes a difference in so many ways.....
The Salted Crack Caramel is the flavor I plan on trying lol. Right up my alley :thumbsup2

Well, for never writing a dining report before, you're doing an awesome job! Loving it & can't wait to read more!
Thank you and glad to have you here!

:welcome: Before we did our first adults-only trip in 2015 Steve had his doubts, too, as did some of our family and friends  But by the time day 1 was over, he was hooked! They are so much different than trips with kids. We eat differently, tour differently, and speaking of tours we do those too since our boys aren't old enough yet for them. I hope you get to do a kid-free trip one day!

8/29 Something sweet and Skipper's Canteen!

I can't believe this, I had almost this whole update done and then accidentally deleted it  So aggravating! Nothing like starting over.....

Here goes!
We were up bright and early today to try and make RD at HS. My original plan had us going to MK RD until our lunch ADR at 1:05, but I was feeling the draw of my 2 favorite rides: TOT and RnRc. Since our FP's were at MK beginning at 11 something we got to HS at 8:35 and they let everyone in at 8:36, holding us thrill seekers at Trolley Car cafe until 8:50. We got on each ride twice with 3 no waits and 1 too-long-for-this-early wait, and were almost ready to head over to MK about 10:20. However we hadn't had breakfast yet so one final stop was in order.

My first thought was Starring Rolls and that's where Steve went. I'll spare your time and won't post a picture of his plain bagel with cream cheese. But on our way there I suddenly remembered something BETTER than anything at Starring Rolls and we went our separate ways for a few minutes while I grabbed this from Sweet Spells on Sunset Blvd:

If you haven't had the pleasure, this right here is the somewhat famous Carrot Cake Cookie, previously found at Writer's Stop and now, Sweet Spells. Unless you despise carrot cake you'll love this; it's moist, creamy, and the perfect breakfast choice if I do say so myself!
Here's a view of the cream cheese filling - no bite marks, I was breaking pieces off

I allowed Steve 2 bites and then ate (almost) the whole thing myself.
Feeling fulfilled we got on the bus to MK and proceeded to wait in 2 not so fast-pass lines and do some strolling around Tomorrowland before it was time for lunch, which I was really excited for!

When Skipper's first opened and I saw the menu, I had no interest in trying it. I love to eat but I'm somewhat picky and nothing stood out, nor did it for Steve. But as time went on the reviews became more positive and after reading some really good things and seeing some real yummy pictures of the food, I decided I wanted to give it a try. I also get kind of bored with the other TS in MK (except for BOG dinner which we all love), not say all the other restaurants are bad!
We only had to wait about 3 minutes before we were escorted to our table. I noticed the theming was really cool and took a couple pictures, but didn't venture into the other dining rooms.

This is a shot of the 2nd level. You can't tell that well but each door has a Skipper's name on it.

Our waiter was nice; he tried to be "puny" and succeeded a couple times. Most of the time he fell flat but we gave him sympathy laughs. The worst attempt was at the end of our meal when Steve told him he liked his jokes. Our server responded, "Thanks! I try not to be cheesy but sometimes I think I'm cheesier than our mac and cheese!" :faint: LOL, it was still fun. The server at the next table was hysterical! She had her customers rolling on the ground. We chuckled along with them from afar.
For our drinks I was happy to see the Minute Maid light pomegranate lemonade on the menu. This used to be all over WDW but on our last few trips it's been harder to find and I love it.

Steve wanted to be adventurous with his drink, so after a suggestion by our server he tried one of their specialty drinks, the Punch Line Punch

Punch Line Punch: Tropical fruit juices and mango puree served with an optional spiced rim of cayenne pepper and cinnamon.

This was excellent and just as refreshing on a hot day as my lemonade! The drink was sweet with a nice mango flavor. The spiced rim is what made the drink though. When combined with the drink - wow! All it needed was a little rum........

Shortly after bringing our drinks we were given bread with I believe a honey dipping sauce

The bread was soft, warm and fresh but, I didn't like it. It wasn't bad it just wasn't to my taste. It's a different kind of bread; like a spiced bread. I looked online to see if I could find a description of it but I couldn't and although the predominant spice tasted familiar I can't place it. Steve enjoyed it though; it's somewhat sweet.

For my meal I knew what I was ordering before we even left NY (we live in NY, not sure I mentioned that). I was getting 2 apps and hoping my eyes weren't bigger than my stomach! The first one being these:

Falls Family Falafel: A secret recipe of chickpeas, garlic, onions, lemon juice and herbs, served with bean dip and tomato & cucumber salad

Very good! The bean dip made the falafel shine. The true "puny"server from the other table stopped by to see how I liked them and told me how they should be eaten: cut each one in half; roll the open half in the dip and then dip that into the tomato/cuke salad. Worked like a charm and it really was a great way to eat these!
I finished them of with a little help from Steve right before my 2nd appetizer arrived:

House Made Arepas: Slow cooked beef, black beens, tostones and queso fresco. These were SO good; I liked this even better than my falafel. The sad thing was I was already getting full when I started eating this and could only eat about half! The meat was very flavorful as were the beans; really everything was great. I think I'd order this as a meal next time except there's a few other things on the menu I'd like to try!

As adventurous as Steve was with his drink, he was the complete opposite with his meal. He ordered the "A Lot At Steak" salad

Grilled steak, romaine, red peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, coriander mint vinaigrette, and garlic chips.
I believe this is why Steve found Skippers just okay and has no interest in returning - he got a salad. Nothing wrong with salads but other than the steak this one in particular isn't really anything special. He did say the meat was flavored well, but otherwise when I asked him how it was he said, "it's a salad".....

Bottom line I enjoyed my meal and would like to go back and try more of the menu, but I think we'll have to put a couple more trips on the books before Steve agrees to go again. I do think it's a good choice when in MK! I also wanted to try their kungaloosh! dessert but I was full. As in, uncomfortably full. Those falafel may not look like much, but they were pretty filling! It was about 2:00 and we had our 6:30 Il Mulino dinner reservation that I'd made on Saturday when there wasn't anything available that night. I needed to walk some lunch off so we used our 3rd FP in a 3rd long FP line at HM, caught the beginning of the parade until it was too hot to watch anymore, did some Main St. window shopping and caught the boat back to the WL.
I was going to put Il Mulino in this update, but I have quite a few pictures from dinner and this is long already. So until next time :wave2:

Yay, I found you! And wow, that food looks so yummy. Excited to follow along :).
I'm very glad you're here! We really didn't have one bad meal on the trip; not that we often dislike our meals there but between Trails End, Citricos and 2 that I haven't reviewed yet, we hit some jackpots!

I'm so glad you had a positive experience at Skipper's! We're eating there on our MVMCP night before the party starts and I'm really excited. Both apps you got look REALLY good. I want to try the Kungaloosh, too, but we never save room for dessert (except the time we ate at Artist Point and nearly died because we ate ALL THE DELICIOUS THINGS, lol!! I've never been so miserably full in my life, but it was worth it!)

I had the falafel on our last trip, and really liked them! Now I want to try the arepas on our upcoming trip! Sorry your husband wasn't a fan. The noodle bowl is really delicious. I had mine with chicken, and my husband had his with duck. 42 more days!

I was planning to stop at starring rolls for breakfast on our HS day but might have to go here instead. we have an 11:15 early lunch at sci fi and are doing morning EMH so might have to stop there instead. Is all of their stuff available? i mean... we might have to try to be a little healthy and have a caramel apple too :rotfl:

the arepas look so good and look like a full meal to me, not an app!

Too funny - we also love the arepas and falafel! Can't wait for il mulino :flower3:
I have to get my butt in gear and post quicker! Il Mulino coming soon :) Tuesday is our FP day for our Nov. trip and I was all over the place with our park days, so I finally got that all figured out last night :thumbsup2

I'm so glad you had a positive experience at Skipper's! We're eating there on our MVMCP night before the party starts and I'm really excited. Both apps you got look REALLY good. I hope you guys enjoy Skipper's! I always try my best to save room for dessert, but in Disney it's just so HARD :bitelip: Because like you, I don't want to miss out on any of the DELICIOUS THINGS lol! Ooh, is this going to be your first MVMCP??

So glad to see your Skipper's review. We also are eating there on our MVMCP in late November. Great reviews!!
Enjoy, I think it's a good choice! And enjoy MVMCP too :santa:

I had the falafel on our last trip, and really liked them! Now I want to try the arepas on our upcoming trip! Sorry your husband wasn't a fan. The noodle bowl is really delicious. I had mine with chicken, and my husband had his with duck. 42 more days!
Those arepas were mouth-watering, especially the beef  I think I want to try Skips Beefy Baked Pasta next time. And I'll definitely save room for the Kungaloosh!
Yay on your upcoming trip! 63 days for us :cheer2:

LOL! Yes, Sweet Spells has their full selection available in the morning! So you can get your veggies with the carrot cake cookie, your fruit with the caramel apple, and you can even get another breakfast staple, oatmeal, with their nice thick oatmeal cookie :rotfl2:
That being said we do like Starring Rolls, so you can't go wrong there, either :)

I

Yes! It will be our first hard ticket party ever. We have tickets to the one on 12/18. I am over the moon to finally see WDW outside of spring or summer!!

Oh dear lord, I finally get here and you are on page 5 already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been a bad, bad DISer lately. But glad to see you named your trip report after my love of mushrooms :P Also side note very surreal as I'm reading this and texting you at the same time. DIS and real worlds collide :-)

Wild Mushroom Flatbread: with Truffle Cheese, Tomatoes, Guanciale and Garlic Crema

Steve was extremely happy with this choice. The dough was crispy around the edge, softer in the middle but not mushy. They were not stingy with the ingredients on top yet it wasn't so packed that eating the whole thing (which he almost did) made him feel stuffed.
I had no desire to try this since, as my title indicates, I don't do mushrooms. I actually don't mind the flavor in some cases, but I don't eat the fungus itself and even though I've found a few things where I avoid eating that ingredient and still like the dish, I very RARELY order something with mushrooms as a main ingredient. But it just looked so good I couldn't resist a bite.......and you know what?

It was good!
First, this looks absolutely amazing. Second, I had no idea you were in the mushroom hating club with me. But third, how quickly you turn your back on me :-) Glad you were brave enough to try this though. Me not so much. I got home from work late last night and Jason and Casey had ordered a pizza with half mushrooms for them. I wouldn't even eat the other half for fear I'd mistake an olive for a mushroom :P

Our last time here Steve had the Beef Short Ribs. This time he went with another of Adrian's suggestions and tried the Scallop Risotto:

With George's Banks scallops, English Peas, Spring Carrots, and Parmesan Nage

How pretty is this! And he absolutely LOVED it. Those scallops were huge if you can't tell and the risotto was perfect. Knowing I don't eat seafood you can imagine I had no desire to try this. Another thing I don't eat - in fact something I detest - are peas. I haven't willingly eaten a pea since I was about 11 or 12. I have never even made my kids try them unless they wanted to and never buy them for Steve, that's how much I hate them. But that risotto looked so pretty........
Pretty doesn't even describe it. These look divine. And look at you miss brave pants eating peas and mushrooms on the same night.

So I stuck my fork in just a teeny bit. And damn, that was GOOD. Like OMG good. It did have that pea taste but whatever else was in it just mixed so well, and that risotto was so creamy, I had to keep tasting it. When Adrian came over to see how we were doing I had to tell her that as a pea despiser I thought that risotto was fantastic. Later on while we were talking to Rony he asked what we'd ordered. He told us there was lots of fresh fish stock in the pea stuff and Steve kicked me under the table because he knew that probably freaked me out.
:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Magic Bar: graham cracker crust, coconut, some type of nut, chocolate chips, crushed m&m's (?)

It reminded me of a blondie brownie with all this yummy stuff in it. Spoiler alert, I had 3 over the course of our trip :goodvibes
Glad you loved these. Definitely missed them over at the poly. They had no interesting options to appease my late night sweet cravings.

I haven't had one in years and Hedi asked if I wanted it spicy or toned down a little. I do like spice but early in the morning I went for toned down, which to Hedi apparently means an entire bottle of tobacco. That baby burned but it was a good burn!
Perfect start to the morning. An hour later one of these bad boys was going down my hatch too!

I did take a picture of mine although it was a little sad

Sad. Sad is an understatement! I wouldn't have thrown some fried chicken on there just for good measure :P

We were able to use our TiW card but unlike other awesome Disers I did not take pictures of our receipts nor keep track of how much we saved, but we think it's a great deal. We could've used it the previous night at Citricos but since our AP's had expired and we didn't renew them until after eating, we lost out on that one because you need to hand over (in most cases) your valid AP with your TiW card.
Just FYI, in our 3ish years with a TiW card we've never been asked for an AP or an id of any type.

We left full with the remainder of my Bloody Mary in a covered coffee cup for traveling and made our way to Epcot.
How did I not think of this???? And why did you not suggest it to me? Bloody Mary to go! My life will never be the same.

I love sangria and while I've had it at Restaurant Marrakesh, I had no idea they served it outside at the juice bar . It was really, really good. Steve thought it tasted like apple juice but he doesn't know anything-didn't taste like any apple juice I've ever had! It was pretty fruity though for not having any fruit in it. I haven't had the Marrakesh sangria since Nov. so I may be wrong, but this tasted different. Not better or worse, just different. We continued or trek making a couple stops and eventually got Steve his Grey Goose slush
Yum, gotta add that to my list for next time.

Fried in curried corn batter, served with black-eyed pea, corn, & tomato salad.
Is that a sausage in your corn dog or are you just happy to see me? :-) Couldn't resist.

This does look amazing! Just showed Jason and guess where we are eating on our next trip!

We rode the safari at dusk and then made our way over to the theater for the first Jungle Book show. We went over to the Thirsty Bar across from the theater, and look what I found!

What????? You found me in a bar? So uncharacteristic of me!

This looks so good, but yes RUM!!!!!! Why oh why are they holding back on us.

Glad you at least enjoyed your meal. We went here a few days later and really loved it again. Appetizer are definitely where its at

Yum on the sangria(s) and the Grey Goose slushie! I am definitely planning to imbibe a bit more next June with the hubs around. My parents just aren't big drinkers so I didn't drink much, except maybe dinners, this past June.

Envious of your meet up. We need to do some overlapping so we can have a meet up! Unfortunately we just go at different times of the year...boo hoo! ;)

May have to check out Nomad Lounge next June. I'll see if I can work it in... :)

Not really very interested in trying Skippers but it's good to know there is at least a thing or two I would eat. I guess I need to do more research bc I had no idea what Falafel was, but it sounds like something I would like after you described it.

Ready to hear about the next meal...yum....

Punch Line Punch: Tropical fruit juices and mango puree served with an optional spiced rim of cayenne pepper and cinnamon.

Looks right up my alley. Mmmmm!

I believe this is why Steve found Skippers just okay and has no interest in returning - he got a salad. Nothing wrong with salads but other than the steak this one in particular isn't really anything special. He did say the meat was flavored well, but otherwise when I asked him how it was he said, "it's a salad".....

I don't understand people who order standard salads at restaurants. This is outside my realm of comprehension. No wonder he didn't much care for the place!
Your apps on the other hand look oh so delicious!!!

I've actually worked some time into the schedule on one of our DHS days specifically to get that carrot cake cookie a Sweet Spells  I can't wait!

And those arepas and mango drink are both on my "must-order" list ::yes::. So excited for Skipper Canteen!

Oh my goodness, I want to add that Trails End Brunch. But I want to add Skippers too! I'm hopeless! I want to add everything! I might pop!

White sangria? Is that a thing?

Awesome reviews, thank you!
