But I Don't Like Peas and Mushrooms! An Aug. '16 Dining Report *updated 10/13 Wrap It Up!*

OK, sounds like a *few* trips to La Cava for me. Just looked at the menu. Big, big margarita fan here...never even knew about La Cava...now I do. Is it sad that I'm thinking 1.5 days in Epcot isn't enough because of the drinking factor??? LOL

Great report. Yum!

Territory Lounge sounds great for a couples dinner. We will be doing WCC if we get our VWL ressies, which I have done before with Mom, but I think my boys will love the fun and my DH will love the food. Glad you took a walk over to the Villas and I'm really glad you are so hooked on this resort. I REALLY, REALLY need to stay here next June!
Territory lounge is definitely good for a couples dinner or just hanging out, but FYI there were a couple families with kids in there when we were. We did WCC for dinner a few years ago and it was a blast! I'm sure Will and AJ will enjoy it and the food is definitely up most DH's alleys lol. I'm REALLY, REALLY hoping you stay at the WL in June too, believe me! I want you to feel how great it is!

LOL! I feel like La Cava can be difficult to get in  We tried twice in Jan. and both times the line was ridiculous, and other than being MLK weekend nothing special was going on. Then in August, not only was there no line but there wasn't even anyone in there sitting or ordering!! Not sure how it is in June but at least your first time I'd try being there shortly before they open. And I completely work in my adult beverages when planning Epcot days and needing more time there to drink is 100% acceptable!
Thanks for reading, Renee :)

Loved finishing up your review! That Avocado Margarita sounds so good. So many people have such good things to say about it!

And those garlic truffle fries.. YUM! Truffle seems to be the big thing these days. They look so good!

So I'll just need to plan a back up...for drinks...in WS...lol. Lots of choices, yes?

You are welcome. I truly enjoyed it!

I agree, truffle does seem to be very popular lately and luckily, I love it!
You'll have to try the Avocado Margarita on our next trip - which is next month, isn't it? I am old so could be remembering incorrectly :o
Thanks for reading, Ashley!

8/29 Something sweet and Skipper's Canteen!

I can't believe this, I had almost this whole update done and then accidentally deleted it  So aggravating! Nothing like starting over.....

Here goes!
We were up bright and early today to try and make RD at HS. My original plan had us going to MK RD until our lunch ADR at 1:05, but I was feeling the draw of my 2 favorite rides: TOT and RnRc. Since our FP's were at MK beginning at 11 something we got to HS at 8:35 and they let everyone in at 8:36, holding us thrill seekers at Trolley Car cafe until 8:50. We got on each ride twice with 3 no waits and 1 too-long-for-this-early wait, and were almost ready to head over to MK about 10:20. However we hadn't had breakfast yet so one final stop was in order.

My first thought was Starring Rolls and that's where Steve went. I'll spare your time and won't post a picture of his plain bagel with cream cheese. But on our way there I suddenly remembered something BETTER than anything at Starring Rolls and we went our separate ways for a few minutes while I grabbed this from Sweet Spells on Sunset Blvd:

If you haven't had the pleasure, this right here is the somewhat famous Carrot Cake Cookie, previously found at Writer's Stop and now, Sweet Spells. Unless you despise carrot cake you'll love this; it's moist, creamy, and the perfect breakfast choice if I do say so myself!
Here's a view of the cream cheese filling - no bite marks, I was breaking pieces off

I allowed Steve 2 bites and then ate (almost) the whole thing myself.
Feeling fulfilled we got on the bus to MK and proceeded to wait in 2 not so fast-pass lines and do some strolling around Tomorrowland before it was time for lunch, which I was really excited for!

When Skipper's first opened and I saw the menu, I had no interest in trying it. I love to eat but I'm somewhat picky and nothing stood out, nor did it for Steve. But as time went on the reviews became more positive and after reading some really good things and seeing some real yummy pictures of the food, I decided I wanted to give it a try. I also get kind of bored with the other TS in MK (except for BOG dinner which we all love), not say all the other restaurants are bad!
We only had to wait about 3 minutes before we were escorted to our table. I noticed the theming was really cool and took a couple pictures, but didn't venture into the other dining rooms.

This is a shot of the 2nd level. You can't tell that well but each door has a Skipper's name on it.

Our waiter was nice; he tried to be "puny" and succeeded a couple times. Most of the time he fell flat but we gave him sympathy laughs. The worst attempt was at the end of our meal when Steve told him he liked his jokes. Our server responded, "Thanks! I try not to be cheesy but sometimes I think I'm cheesier than our mac and cheese!" :faint: LOL, it was still fun. The server at the next table was hysterical! She had her customers rolling on the ground. We chuckled along with them from afar.
For our drinks I was happy to see the Minute Maid light pomegranate lemonade on the menu. This used to be all over WDW but on our last few trips it's been harder to find and I love it.

Steve wanted to be adventurous with his drink, so after a suggestion by our server he tried one of their specialty drinks, the Punch Line Punch

Punch Line Punch: Tropical fruit juices and mango puree served with an optional spiced rim of cayenne pepper and cinnamon.

This was excellent and just as refreshing on a hot day as my lemonade! The drink was sweet with a nice mango flavor. The spiced rim is what made the drink though. When combined with the drink - wow! All it needed was a little rum........

Shortly after bringing our drinks we were given bread with I believe a honey dipping sauce

The bread was soft, warm and fresh but, I didn't like it. It wasn't bad it just wasn't to my taste. It's a different kind of bread; like a spiced bread. I looked online to see if I could find a description of it but I couldn't and although the predominant spice tasted familiar I can't place it. Steve enjoyed it though; it's somewhat sweet.

For my meal I knew what I was ordering before we even left NY (we live in NY, not sure I mentioned that). I was getting 2 apps and hoping my eyes weren't bigger than my stomach! The first one being these:

Falls Family Falafel: A secret recipe of chickpeas, garlic, onions, lemon juice and herbs, served with bean dip and tomato & cucumber salad

Very good! The bean dip made the falafel shine. The true "puny"server from the other table stopped by to see how I liked them and told me how they should be eaten: cut each one in half; roll the open half in the dip and then dip that into the tomato/cuke salad. Worked like a charm and it really was a great way to eat these!
I finished them of with a little help from Steve right before my 2nd appetizer arrived:

House Made Arepas: Slow cooked beef, black beens, tostones and queso fresco. These were SO good; I liked this even better than my falafel. The sad thing was I was already getting full when I started eating this and could only eat about half! The meat was very flavorful as were the beans; really everything was great. I think I'd order this as a meal next time except there's a few other things on the menu I'd like to try!

As adventurous as Steve was with his drink, he was the complete opposite with his meal. He ordered the "A Lot At Steak" salad

Grilled steak, romaine, red peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, coriander mint vinaigrette, and garlic chips.
I believe this is why Steve found Skippers just okay and has no interest in returning - he got a salad. Nothing wrong with salads but other than the steak this one in particular isn't really anything special. He did say the meat was flavored well, but otherwise when I asked him how it was he said, "it's a salad".....

Bottom line I enjoyed my meal and would like to go back and try more of the menu, but I think we'll have to put a couple more trips on the books before Steve agrees to go again. I do think it's a good choice when in MK! I also wanted to try their kungaloosh! dessert but I was full. As in, uncomfortably full. Those falafel may not look like much, but they were pretty filling! It was about 2:00 and we had our 6:30 Il Mulino dinner reservation that I'd made on Saturday when there wasn't anything available that night. I needed to walk some lunch off so we used our 3rd FP in a 3rd long FP line at HM, caught the beginning of the parade until it was too hot to watch anymore, did some Main St. window shopping and caught the boat back to the WL.
I was going to put Il Mulino in this update, but I have quite a few pictures from dinner and this is long already. So until next time :wave2:

I just wanted to check back in quickly and say that because of you I have now added Skipper Canteen to my lineup. I was able to score an ADR at the time I wanted and with the changes to the kid menu there is nothing holding me back. And I was thinking of ordering the same thing you did, lol. Except all of the entrees look so good too. What is a girl to do? I also want the kungaloosh so might just go with the arepas. they look like a whole meal in themselves! some of the entrees actually look a bit lighter than those.

So um... thanks!

Lol good for you! I hope you're going to do some type of report, either dining, TR, or both! The arepas are definitely filling. Plus if you eat an of the bread, which I really didn't, you'd be even fuller. I wanted the Kungaloosh SO bad, but after the arepas AND falafel there was just no way :( So if I were you I'd get the arepas and Kungaloosh, or if you really want an entree instead then don't get an app and get dessert :thumbsup2 ENJOY!!

The char siu pork looks SO good with the 5 grain rice, but so does the beefy baked pasta (I guess egyptian flavored pastitsio), the chicken, the shrimp, the lamb chops and the curried veggie stew. A lot of things look good and it will be hard to decide. I will definitely heed your warning about the double heavy appetizers though, the arepas look like the perfect lunch portion of food to me. If the falafel were wrapped in a pita with a side salad it would be perfect too lol. kiddo wanted to see what was on the adult menu and i showed him the two lionfishe and said I was going to get that. The gagging started up right away, lol (I am such a mean mom). He liked the look of the char siu pork (he is a fan of grilled meats and sweet asianish sauces like teriyaki or boneless ribs etc) so I may get that and share some of the pork with him.

I am definitely doing a dining report and it will probably have some trip commentary in it as well. I have been scouring this board for months. Kiddo is really into chopped (it is getting a little tiring having him narrate when I am in the kitchen and then judging dinner, lol) so I think I will do a "kiddo and me" report with his thoughts as well. It might help other parents of picky kids to get a picky kid PoV.

When does proper etiquette allow you to begin the pre-trip report? we are going in less than 3 weeks! my counter never looks right to me.

I started my pre-trip report for this Sat. back in April lol! You can really start whenever; if you look on the PTR board you'll see people start anywhere from 18 months out to a month out. I'd say a year to 6-8 months seems to be the majority but anything goes!
BTW Steve and I love Chopped, too :) And if I happen to go to Skippers again I plan to get the beefy baked pasta.

I just realized you might mean a dining PTR? Most people don't seem to do that but those who do I think start a month to 2 weeks before they go, so right where you are now :thumbsup2

yeah or just start the report with a preview to be filled in later. I'm excited to jump the gun.

I'm thinking I might get the arepas. why I need to decide this now is beyond me. We have a 6:45 Sanaa and the next day Tusker House breakfast with Yak n Yeti dinner... so a lot of potential similar flavor profiles in all of those meals, the arepas are more south american, sanaa more indian, tusker house is really a mix and yak n yeti more asian fusion. I love ethnic food, but I think I need to pace myself lol.

I'm a lurker and didn't comment, but I loved reading your reviews. Looking forward to your next trip and another report. I should have gotten that avocado margarita when I was at Hacienda. Oh well. I'm so amazed you liked peas and mushrooms. Thanks for sharing your review.

Thank you, and I'm glad you finally came out of lurkdom :-) We leave Saturday for our Thanksgiving trip so I'll be starting a TR and dining report in the very near future!

The char siu pork looks SO good with the 5 grain rice...

I haven't gotten to Skipper in my report yet but my pretty picky oldest son LOVED the char siu pork! I tasted it and thought it was really good as well. Comparable to a teriyaki marinade. He had this with white rice, it was a huge portion, and he was super happy. My husband also really enjoyed the arepas--it was a really big portion for an app, definitely enough for a light lunch! :)
