Hi everyone! I'm somewhat new here and I saw an older San Diego questions thread, so I figured I'd start up a new one :) If anyone is planning a trip to San Diego, post your questions here and let's see if we can't get them answered!

Our resort has a heated outdoor pool....we are going at the end of January. Is it still too cold to swim? Or should we just go for it? It's the Welk resort north of San Diego. Thanks.

Go for it! January usually doesn't get much colder than 50 degrees.. sometimes 45 degrees when it's really cold. But I think you should go ahead and go for a swim! Is there a hot tub at the pool as well? If so, it will really help you keep nice and toasty before going back up to your room. :)

I'd love to hear about your experience at the Welk Resort in Escondido. We are thinking about going there in July (DH and DS love to golf...) Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Welk Resort Escondido is a very nice resort from what I've heard, but I've never stayed there before myself. They do "90-minute timeshare presentations", but they do turn into a 3-5 hour event if you do end up going to it. I'd say skip that aspect of the resort!

Escondido is far from downtown San Diego (about 40 minutes), and it is home to San Diego's Wild Animal Park, which is one of the only things that I will ever call a "must do" in San Diego. Most of Escondido is really trashy and a low income area, but the area where the resort is doesn't have that issue. If you're going for golfing, I also suggest heading over to Poway, which is about 15 minutes from Escondido, and trying out Maderas Golf Course, http://www.maderasgolf.com/, which is an incredibly nice course. They also have a very nice weekend brunch at the restaurant there.

One thing about Escondido in July is that it gets very hot; usually hotter than most of San Diego. Expect temperatures to possibly rise above 90 degrees.. though last summer was a very mild summer and we didn't melt too badly.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been to San Diego twice, but not in 5 years. We have a wedding early August and will be going for 6 nights. What is the weather usually like then? They are getting married on the military base. Our friend lives in Mission Bay. My husband has Marriott points to use, so we were looking at this hotel:

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sanal-courtyard-san-diego-airport-liberty-station/

The day of the wedding (my husband's in it), do you have any suggestions of things I could do by myself? We're not doing the zoo, Seaworld, etc...b/c it is too expensive to bring my young kids-we just had a BIG trip to Disney this year (and they're not invited, so we'd need a babysitter), and I would be so sad to do that stuff without them. We'll definately be back with them when they're a little older.

Any good restaurant recommendations for two adults who haven't had a vacation without kids for 6 years ;) ? We definately want to go to Old Town.

August weather is usually pretty hot. You'll probably be getting 85-90 degree weather, though sometimes it can reach above 90. It's not too bad, though. There isn't really humidity here, so it's a little easier to handle for most people than a summer in, say, Orlando (which I'm sure many of us have experienced.. myself included!).

As for things to do by yourself.. hmm. There's a lot! A few things that I can think up off the top of my head include:

- Check out Coronado, and make a stop at the Hotel Del Coronado http://www.hoteldel.com/
We love starting at the Hotel Del, parking there, walking around the hotel and its shops, and walking around all of the stores within walking distance around the island. There are a ton of really cute little restaurants around that you can eat at or just grab a cup of coffee, smoothie, or ice cream come at! And honestly, the shopping at both the hotel and around the island, is some of the best in San Diego!

- Fashion Valley Mall http://www.simon.com/mall/?id=765
This mall is definitely the most popular mall in San Diego. They have all of your normal stores.. Macy's, JC Penn, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, etc.. but there are also a lot of fun boutique stores that not many of us can afford, but many of us like to window shop at! They also have a really fun food court with a lot of unique places to eat there. It's a really pretty environment to walk around, actually.

- Balboa Park Museums http://www.balboapark.org/
They have TONS of different museums and other attractions (including the San Diego Zoo that you did mention), and a free trolley service that will take you around to each different area. It's really beautiful to walk around, especially during the summer. If you wanted to do one or two museums, I'd highly suggest the Air & Space Museum, if you enjoy the history of flight, or the Automotive Museum. Even if you're not into cars, the Automotive museum is really fun to walk around. The museums in Balboa Park generally aren't too pricey. When you bring your kids, I'd definitely suggest the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center. It's a lot of fun and they have a lot of great hands-on things for kids to try!

- Seaport Village http://www.seaportvillage.com/
Seaport Village is a great place to walk around. I go there alone all the time to just walk around and relax by the ocean. It's really beautiful to walk around, and there are a ton of really fun stores to walk around. They even have a really cute little kite shop where you can pick up a fun souvenir to bring home for the kids!

- Point Loma Lighthouse
http://www.nps.gov/cabr/historyculture/old-point-loma-lighthouse.htm
This is really close to where you're staying, and if you enjoy hiking, it's a great place to go. You take a nice walk up to the lighthouse, and there are a bunch of trails that will take you down to the tide pools and you can enjoy the wildlife there and just get your feet wet! It is a ton of fun and a great place to get photos of San Diego!

And for restaurants..

DH and I really like Island Prime http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/restaurants/islandprime/ It's on stilts in the ocean and no matter where you sit, you get a great ocean view. It's really pretty, and the food is wonderful. I'm a vegetarian, and I still found something really delicious to eat there!

Also, The Prado at Balboa Park http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/restaurants/theprado/ has some AMAZING food. The atmosphere is beautiful and all of the people there are very friendly.

If you're looking for something retro, fun, and honestly kind of random, I really love Maryjane's at the Hard Rock in the Gaslamp. http://www.hardrockhotelsd.com/dining-&-nightlife/maryjanes The food is actually really great, and the menu is really interesting.. they have a lot of great options, including breakfast all day/night and some awesome vegetarian chili! They also have a very full bar with lots of drinks to drink off some of the stress!

If you like Asian cuisine, Nobu is awesome. The food is great, though a bit pricey.. and the service is also usually really good. http://www.noburestaurants.com/san-diego/experience/introduction/

The Grant Grill is also a ridiculously yummy restaurant! http://www.grantgrill.com/

We will be driving from SK Canada, spending 5 nights at DL then driving down to San Diego for a couple of days to do the zoo and SW. Can anyone help us narrow down a few inexpensive hotels?? We are not at all familiar with the area. The cheaper the better, though they need to be clean and in a safe area. Free breakfast would be a bonus but not necessary. Thanks!!

I'd suggest looking around Pacific Beach. It has a lot of independent hotels that are decent looking. I've never stayed at any but live in SD for a while and they seem to have a nice location, not far from SW or the zoo, but far enough away to not be in high demand and are close to a very nice beach.

I've been to Hotel del Coronado for a bridal shower, Balboa Park and the Point Loma Lighthouse, but will definately be going back. Seaport Village looks great for me to do on my own. We'll definately be trying some of those restaurants too. Thank you!!

Now, any advice how to find a decent flight from NY area to San Diego? I missed a $289 flight last month (what was I thinking!!!) and now they're all $400-$500, plus tax and baggage fees! Will the fares drop as we get a little closer or am I screwed b/c it's summertime?

Have you tried Southwest? I know they have their "Wanna Get Away" tickets.. I'm not exactly sure how those work, but I know that they're priced a lot more conservatively than some of the other airlines.

I need some guidance--- I will be there in July for 3 nights (Mon-Wed) and staying near the airport. I am going to be with my dd 17yr and we aren't getting a car until the 3rd day (to go to La Jolla).

My plan so far is:

Arrive airport 1030am, hotel shuttle to hotel/leave luggage. Take taxi to one of the Old Town Trolley Stops. This is where I am unsure- we will need to eat by then (we are on east coast time)... where would be the best place to start discovering San Diego? Corondo? my daughter is not into museums but is into shopping/eating/beach. We are going to the zoo the next day for me-

On the next day, we are going to go to zoo early (using old town trolley) ... how much time should be plan on for the zoo? what should we do after that? would should we not miss??? Old Town or Seaport or???

Thank you all

PS... how long time wise to get from AIrport area to La Jolla about 830am--- due to traffic... ect

thanks Again! Jill

Your daughter is going to LOVE Coronado! I say do Coronado to start discovering San Diego. There are a lot of great breakfast and brunch places that you can get some yummy food to cover your lunch time at 10:30! I'd start at the Hotel Del, grab some food, and just go shopping!

Another place that you can check out instead of Coronado if you want to take a cab, is Mission Beach and Belmont Park. Belmont Park has some great shops and an awesome beach. http://www.belmontpark.com/ But I personally like Coronado better. Plus, it's closer to where you'll be staying :)

I'd allow 3-4 hours for the zoo if you want to take everything in and really explore.. maybe 5 at the very most. There is a lot of walking to do (uphill, etc.), so it will be an adventure!

You mentioned Old Town and Seaport Village. Do you enjoy Mexican food? Old Town has some of the best eats in San Diego, in my opinion. Very delicious stuff! There are definitely a lot of stores there, including a fun candle shop that you can dip your own candle for less than $10! I like it a lot there. Seaport Village is fun if you want to do something on the ocean. There are a lot of fun stores; many of which have cute touristy stuff, and a few restaurants. I'd say that Old Town is the better of the two for you and your daughter, especially if you enjoy Mexican food.

Another thing that you can consider doing after the zoo would be to walk around Balboa Park. There are a ton of museums there, which you mentioned that your daughter wasn't a big fan of, but it's one of the prettier areas in San Diego, and there are a ton of photo ops! Plus, you won't need any transportation there from the zoo.. you can just walk! If you're in the mood for a fancier dinner, the Prado at Balboa Park has some awesome food. I was just there last week and enjoyed myself very much.

Also, I know that your daughter isn't a fan of museums, again, but the Maritime Museum is actually pretty cool. You can explore some different ships and submarines! I really enjoy it personally. http://www.sdmaritime.org/

Or check out Little Italy after the zoo! I love it there; there's a lot of amazing restaurants and some really fun and cute shops! http://www.littleitalysd.com/

As far as going from La Jolla to the airport, I'd say to give it 40 minutes to get there. During some times of the day, you can easily do the drive in about 15 minutes, but with the traffic lights and the probable traffic that will be on the 5 during rush our, you'll want to leave the area early to get to your flight on time :goodvibes

you say they are getting married on the military base?

which one?

because the hotel you are thinking of staying at (Liberty station) is the old naval training center.

some of the bases are quite a distance from there. (NAVSTA 32nd street, or Miramar MCAB for example)

for really good seafood, a good place to eat is near where you might be staying:

http://www.pointlomaseafoods.com/

great for lunch!

It turns out that we got a better rate at this hotel with the wedding rates.

I'm not sure which base, but I want to say that the wedding is within 7 miles. I remember our friends saying that. All the hotels they blocked are right in the same area.

I was just reading about Point Loma Seafood by the hotel. I will definately try it, thanks!!

In the sumer, it seems that the zoo is open late. would it be better to go at like 4-5pm until close? less people? It will be July and 2 adults- no little ones or strollers. Are there any perks to go during the day hours? shows? thanks Jill

It would be a bit cooler. if you go during the day in july, make sure you have some sunscreen, good walking shoes, and water.

the zoo is built around some canyons, so walking down (and up) hills in a pretty good heat should be expected. In the evening hours, some of the more nocturnal animals might be stirring. It does cool off, but not a whole bunch.

the show schedule are usually spaced out through the day, but I think they stop around 5 or so, so if you have a specific show you want to see, you might want to plan accordingly on your arrival time.

we were annual pass holders for many years and always tried to arrive at the zoo after lunch. that way the morning crowd would be gone, and we could avoid the rush hour traffic. (around 5 p.m. go to the polar bear exhibit and you can see the 163 freeway down the hill! watching traffic COULD be fun!:lmao:)

What about at the end of May, we will be there from 5/26-30th, and plan on going to the zoo. I assume the weather won't be as hot as in July, so we could probably get away with a daytime trip without dying of heat! We're from Alaska, and we've been having cool summers in the last couple of years, like in the 50's and 60's.
