Marathon Weekend 2017, and so it begins!!!!

My last experience at Portobello was less than stellar. Of your choices above would stick with Raglan, but just my opinion.

Recapping, today was the Peachtree Road Race 10K. Bert and I had high hopes for a PR. First yesterday we spent moving furniture in the heat from my place to my moms. Great relaxing day before a race I want to PR in. Today it was hot. Really, really hot. Thankfully we had a good corral and started at 7:40. We crushed it Bert PR and so did I. My "A" goal was under 52 and "A+" was under 50. With all going on I did 51:48. Was super pleased with it. Now I am beat.

Outstanding Kris. Congrats to Bert too. :worship:

With the 180-day window for January ADR's coming up, DD threw me a curve and likes The Boathouse at Disney Springs for our Sunday celebration dinner. The menu is a nice mix and as long as the kids stay away from the lobster and filet mignon meals, I can handle the prices.

When my kids were little and we ate at a restaurant, they always asked what their price limit was before ordering. No surf-n-turf on my bill please! So the Boathouse menu on the DIS has me setting about a $32 per person limit (The lobster bake for 2 people is $60 so if they find a willing buddy at our table, that's how you can get the lobster under Captain Daddy's price limit).

Had to set the limit at $32 to accommodate the shrimp and grits DD wanted (and DW probably will too).

More sweaty runs in store. Oh the joy!

Bama Ed

Kris & Bert-now that's sticking it....great job!

BamaEd-a ticket for Mega will get you a HALF a BILLION $$$$$ this Friday if you be the ONLY WINNER!!! pixiedust: Me thinks you could handle any sticker shock menu price then.

Today we had a bike ride. Still training for the century ride in sep, we were supposed to do a 70 mile training ride. Got lucky and a group ride had been planned. Signed up at the last minute as I almost went out of town, lucky for me I did not have to go so we did this ride. We actually did it last year as my first ride, it was so much better this year, but it is HOT in Atlanta. Anyways we had fun, glad we did it, probably do it again next year. Just got back from dinner, wow after 67 miles on the bike, I sure can put food away. Planning an easy run tomorrow.

Next week I have my first triathlon in two years. It's a sprint with a pool swim so I should be good. End of the month I have a sprint but with open water.

Hope everyone is dealing with the heat. Can't wait for cooler temps.

Kris-sure are nice MEDALS instead of rubbery stuff.

The riding sounds fantastic. I rode 141 miles on Saturday 7/9 the day before my 66th BD. Had to get my birthday ride in since we had to go to Orlando on Sunday for a visit with SIL and hubby down from Jersey.

Went to a knee/shoulder ortho a couple weeks ago. Only thing for knees would be replacement and same for shoulder. Have the total shoulder joint replacement set for 10/10, that's 3 months from my 66th. Love the way numbers fall into place. Once the shoulder is ready I will get back to swimming and set sights for another Ironman. Pretty sure the 2.4 mile swim will be faster than 1:44:15. With a much easier swim and the 112 miles on the bike I really will not care how long the marathon takes.

AGREE ABOUT COOLER TEMPS. Went out midnight last night/this morning for a still hot and humid ride.

John, you are my hero. Giving me hope to do that full IM after I retire from work so I have time to train. I still hope for half IM August 2018 but it gives me so much time to back out. Our work deployment schedule for 2017 is crazy so I can't commit to that kind of training for next year. My friend is talking about a relay team so I would be up for that.

thought it was time to bump this thread. i know flametamer signed up for the dark side 10k. I am expecting him to jump in soon. We have not yet signed up for Darkside, but since it is the middle of the month i think i might be able to pull it off.

Me personally, am training for a sprint tri a week from Sunday. I did a sprint tri a few weeks ago but it was a pool swim. i felt like i was cheating however it was a good test to make sure i could cover the distance. No problem on distance did the pool tri in 1:27:49. i was very pleased had a great bike and run, and a decent swim. I usually do ok in the pool so i am worried about next week when it is open water. I did practice a bit with some clinics. I can actually swim just fine in open water if there is no one else around me. Too bad that is not realistic. i am hoping that the open water only adds 5 min to my time. i am suffering from some runner's butt. Hoping that gets better but am still able to keep going so i do.

How is everyone else doing?

I am limping along. August has been hot and rough for training, I'm not gonna lie. But I am only training to finish upright (and get my McFlurry). Weather forecast shows a slight cooling off in late August into Labor Day which will help.

Plans are for me to do a couple other races in the weeks after Disney and the early sign up period (the cheap rates) are about to end here at the end of the month and I have to decide if I will do the Half or Whole in those runs. The Big Beach Marathon in Gulf Shores 3 weeks after Disney offers both and I am leaning toward the Half but undecided. My local Mercedes Marathon is 2 weeks after Gulf Shores and knowing the course as I do (have run it before and the old course) I will do the Half due to the hills (the Whole is 2X around the Half course). And 3 weeks after that is the Half only in Tuscaloosa on the first weekend of March.

Now I remember why I hate training for Wholes. :crazy2:

Bama Ed

PS - Kris, not gonna stay at GSP for Big Beach. I got a spot booked at an RV park in GS that's within walking distance of the start/finish line. Very convenient too for the celebration later that night.

Ed, good call on a spot close to start and finish. Always nicer to walk to the start, extra sleep is great. we had that for the Myrtle Beach half. i think i am going to sign up for Rock and Roll NOLA for the full. Training that way but have not signed up yet. I am with you can't wait for the cooler temps. It has been brutal.

As for me i am getting ready for that Sprint Triathlon next week on Sunday. Basically my first open water tri since i did my first one in June 2013. The open water is the hard part and i have been practicing since Lake Shelby. I can't beleive how far i have come since gulf shores but am not feaking out at all. I went and practiced at a new place today and i was ok. Of course the water was calm and no one was racing with me.

I am feeling comfortable i think i am still going to shoot to finish under 1:30.

Just keep swimming, just keep biking, just keep running.

Garneska, John VN and Bama Ed,
I am always impressed in all that you do in the rehlm of physical activity. And John VN, with all the physical difficulties its amazing what you are doing and continue to plan on doing.

I am small potatoes in this thread but get very excited when I see it pop up again. I did my first 10k in January at it was a runDisney event. I love all things Disney and wanted to give it a try. I had just turned 64 and was hoping I could do the 10k in 100 minutes. I did it in 99 minutes and thats with slipping and falling on the Boardwalk and being questioned by an EMT running in the 10k which held me up for about 5 minutes. She asked if I knew where I was???
My best time so far is 14.38 I did in a 5k.
So Im about to turn 65. I am going to do 10K again in January 2017. Im not very fast but love the exetcise and how good I feel after a walk/run. Just keep moving!

Nice to read that all are on the go and getting ready for Marathon Weekend. Doesn't make a difference if one is a Big Potato or a small spud....:).....keeping the notion to stay in motion is job 1.

FWCamper-DW will not allow me to do any more WDW night events since I managed to face plant both times I was in them. That 14.38 is event time or pace??? :magnify:

Just 4 months away!

Ready for race weekend update!! At the last minute Bert and I signed up for a race to benefit United Way. It was held on the 5th runway at ATL airport. It was a flat course that started early on Saturday. It was just a 5k and originally I did not want to do it because of the tri on Sunday but thought why not, it's just a 5k. Well Bert beat me. I told him it was legit. I was trying and I could not catch him. I think he lucked out on it being flat had there been hills I think I would beat him. He ran it in 23:23 and actually placed 3rd in his age group. I was just behind him at 23:46, but I finished first in my age group. Saturday we never got a nap so the plan was sleep early to get up early for race #2 for me on Sunday.

Last minute decision was to leave Bert at home to take care of the dogs so I could just get out to the race. That was a good decision, i got there early (plus there was an accident blocking all lanes on the highway that i avoided) and then I realized I forgot my bike shoes. Bert was able to get to the race at 7 so that i could get my shoes into transition. Unfortunately he could not stay as he had done nothing with the dogs.

So my morning started a little stressed, but I was ok, until it was time to start. I had high hopes for the swim. I had been swimming well in the pool and done some open water. Well it all fell apart. I had issues with my goggles. I felt like I floated on my back more than i swam. I really would have felt more accomplished if i swam most of the 400 yards. I got out of the water 38th in my age group out of 41. I struggled to get clipped into my bike but finally got started for my 13 mile ride. It was not near as hilly as I expected. I had plenty of time to ponder swimming and triathlons as i was very disappointed in myself. I kept going though and passing people. I managed 42 min for the bike ride. I was very pleased. It was faster than the tri a few weeks ago. Time for the 5k. Knowing I had gone fast on Saturday I was not sure what to expect. I had done a swim and ride now running. Well the course was rolling hills and shaded for the most part. I have to say weather was decent. I kicked that run and finished in 24:08. I was thrilled only 20 seconds slower than saturday. I manage to climb my way out of the bottom of the age group and finished in 13th place for the age group and it was 5 minutes faster than the pool tri (yes the pool tri i had a much better swim). For now my tri season is over. I will still swim, bike, and run. We have another bike ride sep 10 and a 10k.

Bama Ed, agree the weather will get better it will make it easier to run. I have noticed it last week and this week.

good luck every one.

Just keep moving!

John VN thanks for the encouragement. 14.38 was my pace time not event time...I was just happy to do better than 15 mpm...felt like I was burning up the pavement!

What a difference 22F makes!

Last weekend the daily low was 72F and it was hot and a little humid for that morning run.

This morning it was 50F and I could see my breath at the start while the sun was coming up. That makes it SO MUCH BETTER to do a long(-ish) run.

John, since you're down in Florida I don't know if you saw that much of a change like we did but it gave me a little extra kick here in Alabama this morning.

Keep running!

Bama Ed, so agree with the temperature change. We actually had our 10k race this morning. The temp was 55 degrees. Yes I was complaining I was cold while waiting around but it was great for the run. We both were hoping to PR from our last 10k which was the HOT Peachtree 10K on 4th of July. Hoping with this temperature change the PR would happen, well boy did we both crush it. Bert and I hung together for a while and also leap frogged. We did not have the intention to run together we both wanted PRs and were running our own races but we were close, until we hit mile 4. If you remember in our last 5k Bert legitimately beat me. I said I needed the extra 5k to catch him and that was the case again. Mile 4 I pulled away from him. Bert still crushed his PR with a 48:55, his goal was to go under 52. My goal was to go under 50 and I did 47:53 and even placed 2nd overall female. It was a good day, and the weather rocked!!

Next week I have another sprint Pool Triathlon. Actually it is a championship I qualified for (small local races so I placed 2nd in my age group to qualify). Good Luck runners. I think the weather is breaking which will be good for everyone!

Still running....

I'm tracking my cousin-in-law in the upcoming Wine & Dine Half in two weeks. I might share with my family how that works to track my progress in January. Any of you Disney Camper runners have any advice/experience on/with the texting/tracking progress of your runner on course?

Bama Ed

PS - I also have two cousins who ran the inaugural Disneyland Paris Half Marathon last month in Paris (their brother also my cousin lives in Paris with his family so they have a place to stay). They brought their medals to Ohio when I saw them two weeks ago and the medal is stamped "Inaugural" and I told them I was happy for them because there will never be another DLP Half with that word stamped on it.

Bama_Ed,
I used the tracker last year at my first runDisney event...10k. I left my phone with my husband since I did not want to use my time for pictures...I was afraid the balloon ladies would catch up with me! The tracker sent to my phone my start time, 6:03 am, and Elapsed time, 32:15, which was exactly what I had since I wore my watch. I was in corral D and knew the time on the mile markers would not be my elapsed time. The tracker sent a second text once I completed a 5k with Elapsed time, my pace time, and my anticipated ETA.

The third and final text was my Finish and Pace time. I have of course saved all this on my phone. I suppose with the Marathon there will be several more texts sent.

I was wondering after the race was over and on my way back on the bus whether or not the tracker had reported that I slipped and fell on the Boardwalk (thought that would be funny if it did) and was held up for 5 mins, which I'm glad it did not, because DH would have been worried.

Also, forgot to mention, my daughter was able to hook up with the Tracker and she received all the same texts on her phone way up north in Maryland.
