The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD:

I wasn't aware of this and had a read though the information in the link.

I suppose I am not their target audience as I don't pay subscriptions for anything anymore.

A lot of the data I currently have available via Garmin I don't really use or get the full benefit from. However as others have said, tracking runs, run total, RHR, Vo2 max, sleep, steps and weight management all in one place is handy and convenient.

If any of that was to disappear behind a paywall I would either find another free alternative or go back to old school methods, like when I used to record all my runs and my weight etc in a notebook and get my training plans from a book.

Given the cost of these devices (Not cheap) I would hope that access to the type of data I use would remain free but wont be surprised if it doesn't. And I say this as someone who is at the cheaper of the range with a 265 music.

Reading that car manufacturers are charging subscription's if you want to continue to use your heated seats or remote start is another example of where I feel given the money you pay for the hardware these charges and a bit of an affront to me.

All I really see these days as a consumer is less for more and quality through the floor with most things I do purchase.

Sorry rant over.

Anyone use COROS? Wife and I use the Pace 3 and its great for tracking things, but I think the pace zones and race tie predictors might be way off for me. Curious if anyone else has any experience using it.

It's the ensh!tt!f!cation of everything.

I trail run. While I use Garmin (an Epix gen 2), I think Coros are a bit more popular for trail running. I mean more popular than among road runners.

I have exactly 5 days of experience with mine. Following …

Replying to myself...I might consider switching to Coros or whatever, except I've been on Garmin for enough years that I have a lot of connections through Garmin that I'd like to keep. Plus of course, the long run of data.

I don't use Strava, which is what a lot of other people do. It seems like adding another layer of "stuff" on top of what the watch is doing, and why do I need that?

I am the reverse. I had all my running data on NRC and most of them on Strava because I was carrying my phone. I bought the Coros Pace 3 last weekend (so I could leave the phone at home) and it integrated super well with NRC and Strava. I was ready to let go the continuity but so happy that I didn’t need to in the end.

ATTQOTD: this is the first I’ve heard of a Garmin subscription. What does it mean, exactly? I only use my Garmin to keep track of time, distance, and HR on my wrist: I don’t save or export anything from it, never connect it to the app. Is it going to stop working at some point?!
You dont save your runs to the app or even on the watch itself!!!!!!!!!!! I do not share this care free life. I've drove 20 minutes to start a run and realized I didnt have my watch, drive home to get it and then back to start my run. IDK who I am obsessed with the data but I am lol. Do you have a notebook with notes about mileage and pace or any other record or past training and future?
ATTQOTD: I'm not a fan of it. They SAY that all the currently free features and data will remain free. But we all know that promises mean nothing nowadays. :P
This is what I am afraid of what will happen. Oh, no this wont change your experience. then bam! Its like heres some free fast passes to cut the lines for 10 years.... BAM $30 a person for maybe 4-5 rides sucka!!! oh you want to ride the really cool new ride??? dats gonna be another $25 per person!!! next thing you know the free thing we had forever adds $500 or more to your trip that is already 20-30% higher than it used to be 5 years ago....
ok sorry I wanted a little, but garmin will end up charging people for something that was always free and I'll rant about that when it happens as well.

So to follow up on the COROS, it provides a lot of feed back data. It kept showing that all my runs were in the aerobic zones, making me think I was running to hard, heartbeat too fast etc.. There is a Fitness Test in the watch that you can do to re-calibrate all of that, which we did for the second time last week. It has you input your latest 10k time as a range, i.e. 56-60, 60,65, etc. Then it starts with a 5 minute easy warmup, 25 minutes at a pace to determine Threshold Pace and HR, then 3 minutes at a faster pace for Max HR, then another 3 minutes for Max HR #2. When complete, it updates the tables for Threshold HR, Pace Zones, and Race Predictor times. I selected the 56-60 10k range and was very surprised at how I did. My threshold pace went from 9:47 to 8:08 and threshold HR from 154 to 172.

The race predictor is crazy: those times just don't seem possible. For reference, my fastest 10k was 58:58 (local race in October) and HM was 2:28:33 which I did at the Princess HM last month.

So I am wondering if I might have run the Fitness test to fast? Or is COROS just out of whack for me? Either way, now when I run, it puts just about everything into the Recovery category.

Nope! I’ve never used my watch to track anything; it’s truly only there to quickly see what time it is, HR in the moment, how far I am from home, and for vibration interval alerts if I’m listening to a podcast that I don’t want interrupted. I use the iSmoothRun app for synced music+intervals+nutrition alerts+distance alerts and it saves my runs and also exports them to Runkeeper… but I delete all of that info every few years to clear space on my phone. I honestly just do not care! Age has caught up with me and I’ll never run like I used to again: I’m happier just enjoying what I can get out of it in realtime without looking back.

I changed from Apple to Coros, so keep in mind I don't have any experience with Garmin, but I do enjoy it overall. I like the general feedback, especially heartrate and efficiency but I do say I ignore my predicted race times. It also gives you a good idea if you are overtraining or under which is helpful (but best to ignore when sick or under the weather!!). I also have the Coros foot pod which gives more accurate data and is helpful when treadmill running.

I've had a Garmin Venu since 2021, then upgraded to Venu 3S.
I love trying to get the monthly badges. My husband says he's going to make electronic badges for vacuuming the house so I'll do chores!🤣😬
When i saw there were new badges for April i thought i would have to step it up and do a lot more work/ tracking, but I've I noticed you had to subscribe to Garmin + to get them, I thought, week at least i don't have to try to power walk now! 🤣

To be honest, Garmin has been gatekeeping data for years now. Just because i want to wear the more modern looking Venu, doesn't mean I'm not interested in the AI Coach running plans, or recovery time and race readiness, etc. There were some data points that I had to export my run days to a 3rd party to see. Annoying!

At this point I'm not interested in even the free trial. I'm just running for fitness now. I won't start training until June.

Has anyone here walked the disney marathon? I've run it before and am planning on returning in 2027 and trying to rope in some family members as well. My mom has walked plenty of half marathons (and does a long walk of about 10 miles each weekend) but feels like a marathon will be too much. I am hoping getting some insight into what it's like to walk it to help her feel more confident =)

Ok, speaking of Garmin crap....today when I login to the website (Garmin connect: connect.garmin.com), I cannot see a bunch of the regular stuff that I can usually see for runs. See the screenshot.

The map is blank. Below the map, there are usually the various graphs of pace, elevation, etc. and other data. I have looked at multiple runs, including ones from a week ago (that I could see the stats for previously), and they are all doing this. I usually use Firefox as my web browser, but I got the same result in Google Chrome. Can other people see their normal stats? Is this just me? I am hoping that this is not a change in some way with the new subscription stuff.

I guess I was annoyed and ticked off at Garmin...after about 10 minutes, things were loading normally for me.

@Herding_Cats and @The Expert do run/walk at least as far as Magic Kingdom, and then walk most of the rest of the race, so they should be able to give you more insight. #TeamNot-So-Fast for the win! 😁

Happy to provide some insight. We do like our shenanigans and we try to seek out and support our not-so-fast cohorts toward the end of the race, so I/we get as many miles in as we can before the sun comes up (which is between MK and AK with the new course, start time and our speed). For me, that means 60/30 intervals at my marathon pace from training from the start until @Herding_Cats catches up (I start in B with the Club). Then we roll with her 30/30 intervals and do runner math to figure out when we CAN slow down and walk it out. But we also assess whether we feel like we WANT to slow down and walk it out. And our walking pace is pretty fast -- about a 15-16 minute mile on average. This last year, we kept up intervals to just before Blizzard Beach, when we connected with @Naomeri. Prior years we've walked from right around the AK exit. We do stop for pics and bathroom stops, but nothing with a long line. We typically finish with about a 15-30 minute buffer on the last folks to finish.

All that said, IF your walking pace is fast enough and IF you start with a decent buffer and IF you don't stop for much you probably COULD walk the whole thing. I don't think I would want to, honestly. I'm stressed enough as it is to work up that buffer at the first of the race, and even once we slow down it still isn't easy to finish. (There was a point this year where we were vocalizing our pain with literally every step.) And part of the draw of a Disney race for me is to have the time to enjoy the parks, the characters and entertainment. Also a marathon is much harder mentally than a half. YMMV but unless she really WANTS to do it and puts in the proper training to do it, I would not push it.

This year I ended up doing 40/30 intervals until I caught up to The Expert (started in D) and I don’t remember what we did with our intervals, probably 30/30(?) until we found a reason to walk it out (now walk it out!) which, as already stated, usually ends up being somewhere around AK. We alternate which ever feels less miserable and try to at least jog the “downhills.” Plenty of people can and do walk the entire thing, and getting as much of a buffer as you can from the start gives you time for a few picture and bathroom stops.

Post AK can get really miserable for the back-of-the-pack participants because that’s when the temperature goes up, Western Way has limited shade, and there’s not a whole lot to look forward to other than the finish line (Blizzard Beach is where I see a lot of runners crying, and the blip of HS is uninspiring.)
