Well…..it’s Friday during Lent, which means no meat today for my fellow Catholics. One great thing to make for dinner on a Friday during Lent is Potato Pancakes. My DH is making this for dinner tonight, which is what inspired this poll. What inspired him to make these, is he ate potato pancakes in Germany at Epcot a few weeks ago and it triggered the thought to make them when we came home. I like his potato pancakes a lot and I like even more that I don’t have to cook tonight :teeth:. So I’m wondering today, what your thoughts are on potato pancakes. Give us your starchy answer today…….

What is your opinion on potato pancakes?
If you eat them…..what topping do you like on them?
(multiple choice)

For Me……I like potato pancakes, not love them. I do look forward to when my DH makes them during Lent, because I really like his - he makes them more chunky than a restaurant. My most favorite topping is sugar, which I blame my mom for - LOL! My second favorite is sour cream. I also enjoy sautéed onions on top, if my DH has enough onions to make those. I’m not a fan of applesauce on potato pancakes.

Love them hate making them have not had them in years - throw a few my way please !!! 🙏
Enjoy not cooking tonight SLO!!!

If you're talking about Boxty's in Ireland potato pancakes, YES PLEASE......but I don't think I have had that picture type, unless they're basically hash browns

I put that I love them, but it's also a matter of not all potato pancakes being created equally.

When I think potato pancakes, I think the Judaic variety often associated with Hanukkah. Even with those, everyone has a different recipe. I might love mine and somebody else's but find great aunt so-and-so's to not be worth more than a nibble. I also used to have a Catholic friend who went heavy on the potato pancakes at this time of year, but his recipe was nothing like what I associate with potato pancakes and when I tried his at home...well, not to my liking. I also have some years where I vary mine up and add things like zucchini (and sometimes carrots) into the mix to give them more nutrients.

As for how I eat them...while I know many people are sour cream and/or applesauce fans, but I like them plain.

Oh, and my traditional recipe includes: Shredded potato (typically russets), shredded onion, matzo meal, eggs, salt, pepper, and oil.

My mom would make these with leftover mashed potatoes. I don't recall them being served with any toppings, they were pretty good just by themselves. Couldn't say when I last had them, early 70s maybe?

I like them quire a bit. Maybe just a bit short of love them.

I like them with a little sour cream. A little bit of onion mixed in before cooking makes for good flavor.

Our best friends' family, now both deceased, served them often. Marie and I picked up the term, latkes, from them and that's what we refer to potato pancakes now.

They are not something I have had a lot, but when I have I generally like them. I don't know that I'd go out of my way for them.

I feel like this is something that has a wide array of meanings, from construction to topping. I first had them when DH grandmother made them next day from leftover mashed potatoes. We used to make every so often but now we either eat all our mash potatoes or I make enough for lunches/dinners so no reason to repurpose them. DH liked sauerkraut mixed in with mash potatoes or on top of the potato pancakes. He also loves NYC street knishes stuffed with sauerkraut ~ same dish, different format, as potato pancakes.
