I used to make them a lot for my mom. But since she’s been gone, I haven’t made them in years.

Anyone care to share recipes?

I put that I love them, but it's also a matter of not all potato pancakes being created equally.
Agreed. I find lots of variation in what are called potato pancakes, both homemade and in restaurants. I don’t have them often, but love all kinds. My mom made the mashed potato variety, I think with added egg and flour. They were soft in the middle and crispy on the outside. I sometimes make latkes, which are more like hash browns, grated potatoes and onions fried in oil. Delicious served with applesauce and/or sour cream.

Yes, my former friend's recipe was of the mashed potato variety. My house mother back in my college days also made hers this way. It's not my thing, but others certainly liked it and it was an appreciated treat from the girls in my house who were observing Lent.

I agree they are a great Lenten Friday meal!

Mom made them for us when we were growing up. I continued the tradition. I have onion in the batter and serve with sour cream. However, some friends enjoy them with butter or applesauce.

I had an Uncle who used to make them for breakfast when we had family get togethers. I don't recall putting anything on them.
No idea why that became a tradition. We always figured it was because this Uncle was addicted to potatoes. My Aunt had to fix some sort of potatoes with dinner EVERY night or he would complain.

My wife and I have this argument every Hanukah - I prefer applesauce, she prefers sour cream. We also make some variations, she makes ones with zucchini and goat cheese, they're really good!

I also like them with hot sauce, salsa and guacamole, and this is the only time I like them with sour cream.

I like them, they're okay. I should say that I only eat them when my aunt makes them from a boxed mix. I forget the brand. I've never had homemade ones. I think if I had I'd like them better.

I might not be thinking of the right thing. My mother (back in the 1970s and 80s) used to make what she called potato pancakes. They were basically scoops of leftover mashed potatoes that were fried on a griddle till the outside got crispy. We ate them as is, without toppings, unless there was also gravy from the mashed potatoes leftover. I honestly preferred them to regular mashed potatoes (but I don't like mashed potatoes much at all), but I never looked forward to them. I don't remember her specifically making them during Lent or anything.

I like the shredded potato (grated onion, flour, egg, salt, pepper) version but am not really a fan of the mashed potato version. It seems like a lot of fuss for perfectly delicious leftover mashed potatoes.

I love them. I only make them once a year (around Hanukkah) because they’re a pain. You have to really squeeze the potatoes and onions to get the liquid out. I like them with applesauce, but the rest of my family likes sour cream.

I like Potato pancakes.
I don't have them anymore. Funny story: I equate P.P. with camping. That's the only time I ever had them. My uncles who were both boy scout leaders liked to make them in the cast iron pan over a fire!

I love them. My mom made them with finely ground potatoes, so they came out smooth, and served them with applesauce. We shred the potatoes and I still eat them with applesauce, DH just uses ketchup!

I love them, they always make me think of my grandmother who called them Platskis. I'll eat them with sour cream and caramelized onions and applesauce on the side.

I have made them but I use a food processor to shred them. I took a chunk of my knuckle off with the grater trying to shred cheese last year.

I guess I have to say “like”. I have had them, enjoyed them, but haven’t ever felt it was something I had to have.
