Do you like to read, if so.....

I usually go for the lighter murder mysteries - nothing gory or frightening. (OK, I'm a wimp!) Deb

You would probably really enjoy the China Bayles mysteries by Susan Wittig Albert and the Rei Shimura mysteries by Sujata Massey. I get them from the library and they are both very enjoyable.

For those of you that like the Kay Scarpetta books, you might like to try Jeffry Deavers. One title that comes to mind is "The Bone Collector". Somewhat gruesom but a good read.
Just got through re-reading "Fellowship of the Ring". First read it in the 60's.
I can never have enough books to read around me. Any other favorite authors out there??

Thanks for the suggestions! I just checked our library catalog on-line & they only have 3 of the China Bayles books:
Thyme of death 1992
Lavender lies 1999
Mistletoe man 2000

I assume that there were more books between '92 & '00? When possible, I prefer to read the series in order. I may have to check around for these, since $$ is tight & I can't go out & buy them. (I've been out of work forever!)

They only have 3 of the Massey books, too - but the dates are closer. Do you know if there were others in this series?

The bride's kimono
The Floating girl
The Flower master

Thanks!

Deb

check with your library and see if they do an Inter-library loan. It is usually free for you and they "borrow" the books from other libraries for you to borrow.

Susan Wittig Albert has a website: www.mysterypartners.com It lists these China Bayles mysteries:

Thyme of Death (1992)
Witches' Bane (1993)
Hangman's Root (1994)
Rosemary Remembered (1995)
Rueful Death (1996)
Love Lies Bleeding (1997)
Chile Death (1998)
Lavender Lies (1999)
Mistletoe Man (2000) --
Bloodroot (2001) (paperback edition coming January 7, 2003...)
Indigo Dying (2003) --(coming January 7, 2003...)

Coming in August, 2003, An Unthymely Death and Other Herbal Mysteries. These are the China Bayles short mysteries originally written for the Country Living Gardener web site, complete with recipes, crafts, herb lore, and other herbal goodies!

Coming in January, 2004: A Dilly of a Death.

Sujata Massey's website is:

http://www.interbridge.com/sujata/

I think there is one other listed there.

I'm currently in the midst of the North and South series - on book two - "Love and War".

I love John Jakes...especially the North and South Series...Right now I am reading "Heaven and Hell"!! :)

I recently bought "The Hours" to read on the plane home from our vacation. Couldn't get into it at all, but I'll probably try to pick it up again.

I like a lot of the murder/suspense series that some here have mentioned, but also agree with Cindy B. that after a while they become too predictable and I lose interest. The last few Kay Scarpetta books were awful and I got bored with Alex Delaware a while ago.

A few other authors I love are:

John Sanford (The Lucas Davenport "Prey" series)
Maeve Binchey - she writes wonderful books about Ireland
Susan Howatch - The Church of England series is great, but the family dynasty stories are my favorite, particularly The Wheel of Fortune.

Last book I read was outloud to my ds soon to be 6. It was Captain Underpants (Tra la la) I read it to DS and DH kept sneaking in to listen and had to leave the room a few times so I wouldn't catch him giggling. Needless to say We went to the library and took out the rest of the collection so I can read them to him some more. It was Great reading!!!

Being the daughter of a retired Librarian, I love to read !!!!

I have been reading before I could read!!:teeth: I love to read anything from Romances to Biographies to Sports to Nonfiction!
my least favorite are Sci fi , mysterys and westerns!

Now that my dad is retired he has me pick out the books for our house instead of him!!

I love reading Wilbur Smith's novels - all excitement form page one!

I've just finished Harlequin by Bernard Cornwell, can't wait to read the sequel (if he's written it yet!).

I'm currently reading another Wilbur Smith - The Angels Weep.

Oh yes, and er' in my spare moments, IDG's MS Access 97 Bible (1,500 big pages!).

For those of you that like the Kay Scarpetta books, you might like to try Jeffry Deavers. One title that comes to mind is "The Bone Collector". Somewhat gruesom but a good read.

Thanks for the suggestion!I'll have to look at the library my next visit ,maybe even today if I can unfreeze my car!Can anyone else believe how COLD it is here? 10º BELOW 0º when I got up this morning. Brrrrrrr.......

Just finished The Red Tent and loved it- what a powerful book! Am reading John Irving's The Fourth Hand and am laughing my head off. I love John Irving!!!

I've enjoyed the Spencer series too.
I loved "Pennmaric" by Susan Howatch.
I just read "Sullivan's Island" by Dorothea Benton Frank and really liked it.
I read a Danielle Steel book a while ago (I didn't have anything else)...never again!
The Harry Potter books are good.
My husband is reading "John Adams". He says it's good.

It's not AS cold here as it is elsewhere else but it's COLD ENOUGH!
We're going to see "THE TWO TOWERS" but it would be a nice day to just curl up on the couch with a good book.

:)

I like to read the major newspapers on-line(N.Y. times,Orlando Sentinel,Chicago Tribune,L.A.Times,Atlanta Consttution, etc), and it is "FREE".;)

I have to read a lot for school, that I rarely get in time to read books just for fun during the year. :( For school, I am currently reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (nice classic) and just finished reading Life: The Movie and The Catcher in the Rye. I am trying to get back to reading The Fellowship of the Ring soon!

Louise-Montreal....Hey, I thought I was one of the few people to read "The Red Tent". Terrific book. My mother gave it to me and said..'You are to read this book. Now.'

Last month I was recovering from surgery...so I had alot of time to read.....:D

Call of the Wild
White Fang

AND....The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy again!!!

My brother and I were just discussing books we had to read in high school and the fact that we never remember learning about Tolkien and his writing. We did spend a LONG time on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and I absolutely hated it. Granted, some of the stories were good...others were just sick and wasted my time. I would have loved to have read Tolkien back then....all the way back in 1991!!
