Running costumes

I felt like I needed to swing by and finally just say "these are awesome" after quite a bit of lurking in this thread. :) A lot of talent and creativity here, and it's so cool to look through.

I've been tossing around ideas for the Star Wars Dark Side 1/2 Marathon in April at WDW. But I'm wondering where do some of you who are sewing/creating these things find your fabric options? I checked out my local JoAnns to see what sort of performance fabric we had, but options/colors are limited. Any suggestions would be helpful. :) Thank you!
I honestly usually wear normal running clothes under my costume. Those performance fabrics are so expensive! By using my own running shorts or whatever I can just focus on the fabric I want for the costume and still know I'll be comfortable running.

I made the shirt for my costume out of a clearance tech shirt (or 2). I start looking for the right color -- at the right price -- months in advance. For my USO girl, I cut off the contrasting white short sleeves from a $5 Under Armor soccer shirt, added a notched color from a pre-bought costume and added a contrasting cumberbund (red fabric courtesy of a men's tech shirt).

Then I will wear my usual running skirt under the costume skirt. -- Suzanne

Can we talk about your amazing Stan Lee. That mustache. It's perfect. The other costumes are great too though I'm curious how you ran in Iron Elsa if the gold part of the dress was long like it looks in the picture but man, your Stan lee is flawless.

Iron Elsa isn't as long as it looks in the pic. I was sort of crouching there so it looks longer. Stan Lee was an idea I can up with the day I got home from Avengers last year and was just biding my time to get to do it! The mustache made water stops very fuzzy though!

I love the Hawkeye Merida so much! The others are great, too, but the colors on that one and the design really caught my eye. Nice work. :)

Thanks! That was the one I spent the most time on- I ran out of time and a few details were scrapped- like the jacket colors being arrow shaped like Hawkeye's vest is and the jacket is supposed to have a zipper but overall it's pretty much exactly how I had imagined it. There were some cute Super Princess costumes on the course that already have the wheels spinning for ideas for next year!

Hi @SarahDisney - just wanted to let you know that when I ran the Space Coast Half this morning, I saw several ladies with ostensibly HikerChic Sparkle Skirts that fell to knees or lower. One was even almost mid-shin! So depending on your leg length, it seems a possibility!

Thanks for the info! I think I'll try one on in January at the marathon weekend expo and see where it sits on me.

I feel so bad for the people who won't run in any kind of costume, it's part of the fun! I've run as Sailor Moon (Superhero 1/2 in NJ), the tight rope girl from Haunted Mansion, Haunted Mansion cast member, Mouseketeer, French girl from It's a Small World, Tweedle Dee/Tweedle Dum, Prince Eric to my friend's Ariel, Olaf... Minnie Mouse for every marathon... Goofy, Donald, Daisy... I don't have as much time to sew as I used to so unfortunately they're not as good or detailed as they once were, but it does make it so much more fun.

And if the Churro people are here I just want you to know that you're my hero.

I'm going to drop this here first, since y'all are all so super creative!

I'm going to start working on some "Spectator" shirts for my family and friends to wear over the course of Marathon Weekend. But I'm afraid that the only thing I can think of is super dumb.

My initial idea is shirts that say "Team Keels" on the front, and on the back it lists all four races with a spot to check off in fabric pen or whatever after I finish all the races.

Is that lame? Yeah, I know it is.

Help! Please send ideas!

I think that sounds like a fun idea, not dumb at all!

I think since you have the ability to custom make shirts with that great machine of yours it might be fun to have different sayings on the front of the shirts along with Team Keels. Like "She gets the Dopey from her Mother" for your dad's shirt or something like that maybe? The back sounds like a great idea- maybe just plus the front for everyone running past to laugh at?
