Abandoned Attractions

Not an "attraction" per se, but "abandoned and rotting" nonetheless.

Isn't that were they're building "Art of Animation" Resort?

Sorry, clearly I don't know how to make the pictures appear in my post. I am refering to Robo's photos.

I understand why they haven't torn anything down. It just seems unsanitary and disrespectful to just leave trash and stuff in the buildings. I mean, there was a plaque with names on it just left to rot! And if keeping everything a guest doesn't see a mess is the case, I would be nervous to think about where they are preparing my food and cleaning my sheets! :scared1:

To what area(s) are you referring?

(This is a huge thread.)

Bringing this back to one of the first things mentioned in the thread, the newest edition of the Guide is going to share a theory as to why the pre-50's Pop Century resort buildings were never finished. :rotfl:

I agree with this. What can anyone name before 1950 that resonates with fun and feel-good emotions? I think of my mom and grandparents, living in an unheated, rented farm house during the Great Depression, growing their own food. They had lost their mortgaged home. We have a postcard from about 1917 from a relative who was in a tuberculosis sanitarium. What he wrote was very cryptic, to hide that fact of his disease, because it would cause family scandal. There are a few early cousins of my grandpa's who died of the influenza epidemic. Oh, how about Dutch Elm disease wiping out so many lovely trees. I could go on. But is seems in those decades, people endured more than they enjoyed. :sad2:

This thread IS huge! Sorry.

Someone posted pics of the current state of RC. I would post the link but it wont let me becuase I haven't posted enought comments.

I was just surprised, thats all!

Oh, and cool link Chartle!

Rest easy.
It's safe to assume that they are not preparing food or laundering sheets at River Country.
;)

The current facilities in use in that regard are still maintained by staff.

Not so safe to assume they found a better place to prepare food, though. This thread here on the Dis had been a real eye-opener!

AHAHAHA I was only kidding! Gross!

I have a few pictures of the wave machine at the Polynesian Resort. Unfortunately I have no way to post them here.

It was located at Beach Comber’s Island and cast waves onto the southwest beach (now the Disney Wedding Pavilion). The waves were never big enough to surf on but they did cause significant erosion of the Poly beach and wave machine was shut down permanently. The seawall behind the machine is still intact and part of the wave machine below the water is still there.

Incidentally, Beach Comber Island was the original location of the Polynesian Luau.

I remember seeing this on the Mike Douglas show I guess some time in the early 70's when the park first opened.

I could have sworn I saw Goofy Surfing or at least someone surfing on the waves. Maybe it was just Water Skiing Goofy. :confused3

I do miss the old Adventurer's Club at what used to be Pleasure Island

This thread has been so great. Spent hours reading through it today/tonight

I've always wondered about the Poly wave machine....curious to see pictures, although I've heard you can see it from satellite photos Also, did Disney ever use the islands for anything else, because it looks like there are buildings on most if not every one. Curious....

I think I've heard/seen that there are firework launch sites on a couple of them that have been used in the past for some special firework shows. (such as the "360" MK shows).

I'd also expect there to maybe be some power sheds on a few since most of the islands have navigation lights surrounding them and it would be logical to have a central location to help control/maintain the system.

beyond that....which is mostly conjecture, I honestly don't know.
:confused3
