The mosquito spray truck that comes in the neighborhoods came and sprayed while all the kids were playing outside. My daugther was one of the kids playing and when she came inside immediately, she was smelling like the mosquito spray so I put her in the shower immediately.

I was so upset. Usually they come at midnight when the mosquitos are out in full force but today they came at 5 pm.

I hope there are no side effects. I am kinda worried now. I did not catch the name of the company.:furious:

I sure hope your daugher is ok.

Our whole neighborhood has requested 'no spray.' We are diligent about standing water and high grass. My husband even gets out his ladders and clears water in gutters all around or helps. Malthion is not something I want my whole house fan sucking in while I'm sleeping.

We used to chase those trucks around the neighborhood when I was a kid. We thought it was really cool to run through the fog. She will probably be fine. It is probably less harmful now than it was then.

So wait...these are trucks that spray mosquito repellent?? What a cool idea! I've never heard of this before.

We did the same thing as kids. It was no big deal. Like the pp said, I'm sure it is a whole lot harmless than it was some 35 years ago. No ill effects from it at all. Be thankful they do spray where you live. There was someone local who died last year because of a mosquito bite but they still don't spray here. Too many people put up a fuss about about it. :sad2:

Does anyone remember standing under the "rain" of the spray? I remember the year they sprayed for gypsy moths and we would get rained on every 3 days. And I went on to reproduce.

If you are really bothered call the town- they'll know who was spraying.

I use to run around and play when they were spraying when I was a kid and it never made me sick...I would be glad they are spraying, alot of people die every year from mosq illness....we call and have them come out if we dont we get carried off!

Actually the best time to spray for mosquitoes is at dusk. Thats when they come out to feed.

I wasn't harmed = No one was ever harmed:confused3

Malathion is highly toxic and carcinogenic and I'd be really ticked if they were spraying it in my neighborhood. Many studies have already proved the harm of malathion. Of course, not everyone gets cancer or ill from it. It's been banned in some areas.

OP, I hope your dd is alright- I'm guessing a one time exposure won't cause harm.

Well it depends on what they were spraying. There is a particular type of spray that is made from Marigolds, that is sprayed and is not toxic...or less toxic.

Oh, and spraying for mosquitos at midnight?? Really????Seems pointless. Mosquitos are out "in full force" at dusk.

OP I understand you are concerned...we don't have those spray trucks here so I have never dealt with them. My suggestion would be to teach your daughter to come indoors right away, or go inside a friend's house if she is playing with a friend, as soon as she sees the truck coming. Hopefully she won't get sprayed again.

Just curious-do the spraying trucks work??

The bug truck is the subject of much talk in our town. I've found out that it sprays something called Pyrethrin that has a very low level of toxicity. So call the town and find out exactly what was being sprayed to put your mind at ease. :goodvibes

Yes they do.

Back on Long Island, during the height of the West Nile Virus scar, they sprayed for mosquitos EVERYWHERE. But they would issue warnings via tv, radio and print as to where they were spraying so that people could keep their kids and pets indoors and hose off any outdoor toys or furniture afterwards.

OP-I would call your Dept. of public works. Or just the town hall. They will be able to tell you who sprayed and direct you to them. I'm sure it's fine, but it can't hurt to call, I'm sure they get these calls all the time, especially if they sprayed at 5pm when a lot of kids are out.

Wow, I am shocked at how many played in a fog that is intended to kill insects!!!

When we saw the truck we ran to the nearest garage and shut the door.

Mikeeee

Hopefully, it is harmless like you all say. Thanks, makes me feel better.

Yes, for some reason, they spray at around 1 am at night. I can hear the truck.

They only came in the evening that one time but most of the time it is around midnight and 1 am.

I found out that it is us paying the company to spray thru our homeowner association fees. Its a good thing but do not come when kids are outside.

Are you sure they are spraying for mosquitos? 1am seems to me to be a pointless hour to spray for mosquitos. I would ask the HOA to look into it.

1. you should be notified if they are spraying so you can take precautions (keep kids and pets indoors, hose off outdoor furniture and toys)

2. mosquito spraying should be done in the early evening (unless they are spraying something specifically just to kill larvae?)

We used to ride our bicycles behind the trucks. There was also a kiddie park in the neighboring town with a small train that ran around the perimeter. When the engineer blew the train's whistle, it shot mosquito spray out. Everyone loved that train! :)

Sorry that your DD got caught in the spray, OP. If it's concerning you, I second the advice to make sure she knows to come inside as soon as she spots the truck. Sure wish they did that here because the mosquitoes are already out in full force.

They have always sprayed at dusk in my area. Unless she was directly hit with the spray I don't think I would worry too much. I'm sure that you can find out from your HOA the name of the company and ask them what they spray. When we lived within city limits we could always hear the truck a few blocks away and we would just go inside for awhile.

My husband did the playing in the fog thing- he and friends would put on goggles and hide in the fog on their bikes- chasing the truck all over the neighborhood... I had a little sense and would go indoors but would usually watch it.

I've taught my kids to come inside when they hear the truck or see the lights.

At the peek of the season our city has us crop dusted with the bug spray... they do warn about it- and they do drop that later at night than the "at dusk" spraying that the trucks do.

I do know the chemicals are not near as bad as they used to be- and they do not use malithion locally- I believe it is pyrethrin- still nasty stuff- but nothing like the straight DDT they used to spray when I was a kid. I know the fog is nothing like it used to be. There was a heavy fog that hung around for a while when I was a kid- and now- unless the light catches the mist just right you can't even see it.
