Here is a fine example of pathetic nickel and dimimg at my local McDonald's tonight. Literally!! If I had ordered the burger plain, then ask for the ketchup and mayo packets at the next window, that mayo would have been free! It's not about the nickel, but the principal of this. 99% of most people will never notice this and they know it. Many won't even ask for a receipt.

My parents noticed this about McDonald's too and I found that if you order McDonald's through Grubhub the prices for the food is different but if you order McDonald's through UberEats the prices are also different. And if you go to any McDonald's in other cities they raise the food prices too. I also noticed that they do this with their breakfast menu too. My mom used to enjoy Egg McMuffins from McDonald's when she would find a deal but when they started raising the Egg McMuffin prices she stopped buying them. I think when it comes to fast food McDonald's is trying to compete with Jack In The Box because Jack In The Box has better breakfast deals and for awhile in fast food breakfasts McDonald's competed with Burger King but when it comes to fast food in general the only way McDonald's is still a survivor is because they seem to make money off their app by having app-exclusive deals on their food but they might have competition because Wendy's is doing the exact same thing as well

so they charged extra for mayo but NOT for an extra order of fries?

I don't read it as the mayo being an extra nickel (although it might be that). I read it as, you got a special order, without mustard and a pickle, but with mayo. So, the nickel is paying them to make you a "special" burger to order, versus the standard, assembly line one. Still, they should at least be clear upfront--it's probably worth it to you, to have the burger made the way you like it.
