Here is a fine example of pathetic nickel and dimimg at my local McDonald's tonight. Literally!! If I had ordered the burger plain, then ask for the ketchup and mayo packets at the next window, that mayo would have been free! It's not about the nickel, but the principal of this. 99% of most people will never notice this and they know it. Many won't even ask for a receipt.

My parents noticed this about McDonald's too and I found that if you order McDonald's through Grubhub the prices for the food is different but if you order McDonald's through UberEats the prices are also different. And if you go to any McDonald's in other cities they raise the food prices too. I also noticed that they do this with their breakfast menu too. My mom used to enjoy Egg McMuffins from McDonald's when she would find a deal but when they started raising the Egg McMuffin prices she stopped buying them. I think when it comes to fast food McDonald's is trying to compete with Jack In The Box because Jack In The Box has better breakfast deals and for awhile in fast food breakfasts McDonald's competed with Burger King but when it comes to fast food in general the only way McDonald's is still a survivor is because they seem to make money off their app by having app-exclusive deals on their food but they might have competition because Wendy's is doing the exact same thing as well

so they charged extra for mayo but NOT for an extra order of fries?

I don't read it as the mayo being an extra nickel (although it might be that). I read it as, you got a special order, without mustard and a pickle, but with mayo. So, the nickel is paying them to make you a "special" burger to order, versus the standard, assembly line one. Still, they should at least be clear upfront--it's probably worth it to you, to have the burger made the way you like it.

I disagree. They will not charge you extra to make a special sandwich removing everything and make it plain.

There is no charge for extra fries. This is a substitution for yogurt or another side that is included with the kids meal.
I have not bought one in years so I thought it was still just the one side. I did look up the deal with mayo on our local's pickup site (so no uber eats or such upcharges) and there mayo is considered a dipping sauce even though it's in a packet and comes with an upcharge. you can't even add it to a burger with the other condiments, it has to be an additional add on purchase (so I guess if a person wants it put on a burger they do better to order in person).

Even if you do in-person the charge is still there because it's considered an 'extra'. Just like if you get nuggets and want an extra sauce they charge you 10 cents for it.

This has been policy since at least 1997 when I worked there. If you add cheese to something that doesn't normally come with cheese there is a charge, same thing with the mayo, or Mac sauce or anything else. They aren't supposed to give you the mayo packet at the window without charging you for it, but most will just write it off and include it in their food waste, or the GM will ring through some obscene number of them and pay themselves for them.

I've never been charged in my life for a burger at Mickey Ds to be made differently, here in the South anyway. This is for the mayo.

I get a packet of mayo, no charge. Drive-thru, dine in, makes no difference. They put it on the burger, a charge.

Sort of like fast food and pizza places that will give you certain dipping sauces for free, but Ranch Dressing is an upcharge.

Prices are higher with door dash and ubereats, it goes to them. They get the service fee and the money above the regular prices, the drivers basically work for tips.
