Measles Outbreak - new case in MD

My grandson was premie at 34 weeks, so I'm not sure what the impact getting the MMR early would be.
The idea is that the baby has antibodies from the mom at birth, but those antibodies gradually disappear and are low enough by roughly six months of age to be insufficient in a high risk situation. I’d definitely consult the pediatrician about recommended protective measures.

I would be concerned but i also caught chicken pox at the age of 4 months despite the doctor telling my mom it was 'impossible' and not to worry about my brother who had them being in proximity to me :sad2:

as an aside-if anyone is old enough to have been immunized for measles in the 60's-80's they might want to have the blood work done to check for the antibodies to fight measles. back in '89 there were outbreaks among vaccinated kids that indicated a need for a second dose (they've since then improved on the dosage). I learned as an adult that my immunization had not taken and the doctor said it was not uncommon in my age group.

Yes, I would be quite nervous with young kids. And also agree with the above about asking for the antibody test in certain situations. It's really a sad situation.

When I was pregnant in 1990 I had no rubella immunity, so after DD was born I got a shot, I think it was MMR but that was a long time ago, so not positive.

When we were married (late 80s) after I returned from my honeymoon, I was informed that I had no measles immunity. I'm in the "if you're born prior to 1957" group, assumed to have had the disease, but I had the MMR vaccine in the 1970s because my sister came down with measles then.

BUT, I had no discernable immunity in the 80s. So I got another MMR vaccination. That one seems to have "taken", since I had a reaction to it.

I asked my doctor as I fall into this age bracket. Her reco was to just get another vaccine vs the bloodwork so that’s my plan. Not advocating others do this necessarily but would recommend speaking with your doctor if concerned.

Not an infant, but my daughter (age 35) is immunosuppressed due to receiving an heart transplant at 6 weeks old. She has never had the MMR and can’t get it due to it being a live vaccine. If we were traveling, I would be concerned.

Sort of interesting, even the vaccines she can get, she doesn’t seem to develop immunity. She has had the hepatitis series twice and still it doesn’t register in her lab work so the doctor quit trying.

I'd be extremely concerned. With Spring Break beginning next week for many and continuing in the weeks up to Easter, it is only going to spread.
