McDonalds Charging for Condiments!

Because it is illegal. In almost every state (if not every state), restaurants must provide free tap water.

If you find a McDonald's charging for water - even if they are charging for the cups (a loophole that works in a very small amount of states, but in most states is still not allowed) - report them to corporate or the local better business bureau. They are breaking the law and face a large a fine.
What?!? I have never heard of such a thing. When we were going through a drought a couple years ago, it was commonplace for restaurants not to provide water unless the customer asked for it. A lot of restaurants never went back to the old ways. Now it is their policy not to provid water unless asked. I too would love to see where you got this information. As far as I know, it is just a courtesy restaurants provide their customers. It is not a law.

I thought I was going crazy when I passed through Georgia on our drive home from WDW and stopped at a McDonald's, ordering the chicken strips and them telling me that it would be extra for the Buffalo sauce. WHAT?! I thought it was, maybe, just this particular location or something... Haven't visited one locally since. I'm a Wendy's kind of gal anyway!

We almost NEVER get McDonalds because they charge a $.45 atm fee and we hardly ever have cash. Now this, really charging me for a packet of katsup.

I work at a Wendy's and we are also getting more strict on everything. Less inventory of stock on hand, ordering the bare minimum of food product needed, closely watching labor costs etc. WHen minimum wage went up, our wages did not. So next year when minimum wage goes up (to $7.15??) all of us who make more than minimum wage will not be getting a pay increase. So I will make the same as a new hire and I have been with the company off and on since a teenager. :scared:

It may not seem like a big deal but those .10 and .15 really add up over a week, month, even a year. If my store doesn't get our food costs in line...no raises indefinately. 90% of our customers either don't use any condiments or use a reasonable amount. I had someone Friday order a 4 piece nugget ans asked for 5 sauces. To me, that's a bit too much.

Generally, the rule is 1 napkin per sandwich, nugget, wrap salad etc, 1 pack of salt and 2 packs of ketchup per fry ordered (upon request), 1 sauce per 5 or 6 piece nuget, 2 for an order of 10 piece nuggets. Crackers (I think ) are 2 per small 1 pack of hot sauce and a large os 3 or 4 crackers and 2 hot sauce.SO although most Wendy's don't charge and don't make a big deal out of giving extra, there are guidelines in place. For now, we ask the maount of condiments needed and only charge for extra nugget sauces and salad dressings. (1 pack per small salad, 1 per large salad 2 if requested and charge for additional above)

Extra fuel charges and delivery fees are responsible for much of the restrictions and monitoring. We also began getting our trucks at night when there is less traffic e.g. less fuel costs.

My brother inlaw works for our local McDonalds and he just told me that they are now currently charging for condiments. I can understand charging for extra BBQ sauce or the like but they are charging 16 cents per packet of ketchup. Are anyone elses McDonalds charging for condiments or is ours just a test resturant?

We ran into this at Burger King over a year ago, charged us for Ketchup, we almost fainted. I gave it back and said KEEP IT!! Just NUTS!!

I think the poster was saying that restaurants can't charge you for tap water if you ask for it--not that they have to give you water whether you want it or not. Most places around here won't bring it to you unless you ask for it, which I think saves a lot of waste! But no one charges for it if you do ask.

When my husband & I went to a McD's recently and ordered a Southern Chicken Sandwich and asked for mayo on them (we were trying to get it to taste like Chick Fil A, as we don't have any here in the northeast) they charged us $.40 for each sandwich to put a little bit of mayo on them. They don't put any condiments on those sandwiches and they are a little dry to begin with, so I think that they should put something on them.

Restaurants get charged for every credit card swipe they do. A lot of gas stations have started to charge "credit card" rates as well. Adapt and carry a little bit of cash or don't go there.

People need to try seeing things from the other POVs: the restaurant, the employee, the customer, etc.

I guess this will cut their costs due to the people who are getting condiments at fast food restaurants and stockpiling them for use at home or on vacation--or in kids lunches? :confused3.

People actually do this. Imagine my surprise when my neighbor "returned" the ketchup she borrowed by handing me packets of ketchup she obviously picked up at Mickey D's. Those golden arches on the package were a dead give-away.:confused3

And as a general question...if you're having burgers for dinner and borrow your neighbor's bottle of ketchup, then after dinner return the bottle, is it really necessary to return the 1 oz you might have used?

McDonald's franchises are independently owned and operated, so it's up to the owner on whether or not they will charge for condiments. Some stores have been doing this for months and others have not. Some pay an extra dining-in fee, while others do not. I went to McD's last weekend to get hotcakes for the kids and asked for extra syrup (you get one per order). I had three orders and they gave me 6 syrups.

So far, none of the McD's around here have charged for any extras at all and they always give us tons of ketchup and napkins when we ask. Taco Bell gives us way too much hot sauce. When I ask for hot sauce, I get about 10 packages for one burrito!

If malt vinegar is offered, I prefer that, but usually it isn't here in the States, so I will use ketchup. I love the places that do offer malt vinegar though....noone else in my family likes it and so whatever batch I pour the vinegar over, is MINE! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Dawn

Long John Silvers has malt vinegar packets for drive thru customers, and bottles in the restaurant, in case you need a fix!

My daughter loves ketchup. dumps it on everything. she needs5 or 6 for her meal. the rest of us, maybe 2 or 3 per meal. so for my family of 5 we need 17-20 packets. If they charged us a dime per packet it would add 1.70-2.00 to our bill. I will go somewhere else if they do that here.

Why am I seeing Lucy making soup with her ketchup!:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Do you have a link for this law? Is this a state-by-state law? I googled it but couldn't find anything pertaining to the US.
Thanks! :)

Actually, a number of gas stations have returned to posting a reduced price for cash sales. It is a little different than a "credit card" rate.

As far as charging for condiments, how many people on this Board have a drawer of those little packets at home? Hoarding these packets for kid's school lunches or spring & summer picnics is what is forcing thses establishments to charge for the darn packets. I see people swiping tons of Splenda at Chik-fil-a when they have a sammich, fries and a Coke on their tray. Now, maybe, *just maybe* they need to sweeten up that already too sweet Coke with the 40 Spenda packets, but that is not a horse I'd bet on.

I have a little rubbermaid container with some in it. But I don't ask for extras just to hoard them, I only save the ones I'm given that I don't use.

That's what I do as well. I do ask for ketchup because my kids want ketchup with their fries & nuggets (We usually do drive-thru). But, if they give us 6 packets & we only use 4 I'll save the leftover 2 for days that I send chicken nuggets to school in their lunches. If we're eating in the fast food place I'll try & take exactly what we'll need & if I'm off by a packet or two I will leave them on the table.
I have, in a moment of 'Oh crud I didn't realize we're out of ketchup' used the packets for dinner. But those times are very few & far between.

There's a big difference between 'Wow, free ketchup!! Let me load up so I don't have to buy any at the store!!' and 'I've got two packets leftover. I'll save them for school lunches'.

Here at my McD's (and other fast food) they do not charge (yet) for extra condiments. I always try to leave the extra's or give them back and I have seen them just throw them in the trash, so now I take them home and save them.

(bolding mine)

That's due to health codes. Anything that goes to a consumers tray or table must be thrown away if left. It's incredibly wasteful in the case of prepackaged stuff that obviously hasn't been comprimised - but the alternative is rinsing off all of the little packets and stuff because someone may have germified them and the next person touching them might get sick.... Sadly we live in a litigious wasteful society.

That is ridiculous. We pay at the first window and pick up the food at the second window. I would ask for it at the 2nd window, are they going to ask me for 16 cents. Good Grief.
