Roseanne Barr hits out at Mormons, claiming Marie Osmond's son killed himself because he was gay

Actress Roseanne Barr has sparked controversy by claiming that Marie Osmond's son killed himself because he was gay.
The sitcom star made the allegations on her blog, and said that Osmond's Mormon faith was to blame for the 18-year-old's death.
Michael Blosil, the singer's adopted son, was found dead outside his Los Angeles apartment building last week.

It is thought the teen, who is said to have battled depression and had been treated at a rehab clinic in the past, jumped to his death.
Now Barr has spoken out, saying the youngster took his own life because he was afraid his sexuality would leave his mother ashamed.
Barr writes: 'Marie Osmond's poor gay son killed himself. He had been told how wrong and how sick he was every day of his life by his church and the people in it. Calling that "depression" is a lie!
'Yet the Osmonds still talk lovingly about their church, saying nothing about it's extremely anti-gay crusade. Marie also has a gay daughter!

'Hey I want her and all the gay kids in the world to know that they are just fine being gay and that they deserve love and respect instead of insults and rebuke!
'I have gay people in my family and my circle of friends and I am kicking bigot *** and taking names!'
Barr, 57, who grew up among Mormons in Salt Lake City in Utah, also told the late teen: 'If I had been your mom, I would have told you that some of the greatest and smartest and most artistic people who ever lived were gay.

'I would have shielded you from bigots who tore at your soul, like the ones that unfortunately were closest to you.
'To all the gay Mormon children out there in the world, I will be your mom! I love you!'
A representative for Marie Osmond was unavailable for comment.
Michael Blosil is expected to be laid to rest at a private funeral in Utah on Monday.

It is my firm belief that no person of sound mind can take their own life. The self-preservation instinct is just too powerful. So, he might have been gay, and he might have been ashamed of that, but if he took his own life, his mental problems were to blame.

Roseanne is just a hater hating.

Although it's very insensitive of Roseanne to make a public statement like this, she does seem genuinely angry and saddened. I do know that there are many gay people who become depressed because of acceptance issues, especially when surrounded by strongly religious organization and people.

However how would she know why the guy took his life? And what gives her the right to say anything?

Well that is the time gay males are very vunerable to suicide.

My nephew was lucky he had the courage to walk out the door with the clothes on his back. He was kicked out for being gay due to my SIL/BIL's religion.

So, I have very strong feelings on the subject to say the least. I won't delve into it due because that hits both of the no-no's on the "do not talk list".

Whether he was gay or not isn't really the issue. Roseanne Barr is terribly out of line even making these hurtful comments. And how does she know so much about this boy? Did she actually befriend him? (scary thought!) Or is she simply making assumptions based on having lived in Utah during her teen years.

My heart goes out to Marie, his sibs, his dad, and his extended family. No matter *why* he chose to jump off that building, he clearly was a very troubled young man.

Although I usually like Roseanne, I think she was in the wrong here. She should have done a little fact checking first since one of Marie's daughter is a lesbian and is fully supportive of her. She even has been quoted saying that she believes the state has no right to declare gay marriage as unlawful, though she does still have her religious beliefs on the matter.

Roseanne Barr Arnold Whatever should keep her big fat yap shut, she has NO business inserting herself into this very sad time for Marie and her family.

Does she really think that by saying this she has helped this family or helped gay people struggling with acceptance? She has NOT, she has only added to the survivors' distress.

I agree. I do think it is a little insensitive for her to make a statement like that, I do think her heart is in the right place though. I have many many many gay friends ( I do theatre) and if he was gay and was getting pressure from the church then I can see where the depression and drugs came into play which could have gone hand in hand with the suicide.

Maybe because it angers her and breaks her heart that michael didn't feel like he fit in with the LDS way of life and so ended it. She's an unoficial advocate for gay youth. I think I read that one of her own children is gay.

What's so sad is that he was only eighteen, not nearly enough time to come to maturely come to terms with it. His lesbian sister is a more rebellious type, so she's doing ok.
