How old do you have to be, to not get carded??

at the grocery stores around here I've seen them card the elderly. They have to put a valid birthdate in the register.

Depends on the venue, and how strictly the local authorities have decided to interpret the liquor control regulations. DH and I (were are both in our late 50s) were "carded" just last weekend, at a university football game--but the rules there are that everyone who wants to buy a beverage, even water, is carded and given an identifying bracelet which must be visually checked by the people selling beverages. There were security officers sitting next to all the beverage stands, so the policy was followed to the letter.

At the grocery store I worked for, it was required that we card everyone. NO EXCEPTIONS! Most people were absolutely fine by this and I even joked with a few of the seniors about it...they loved it regardless of rule or not! I did have one customer that literally blew a gasket and went beserk on me for it. He was screaming that we were discriminating against him blah blah blah and finally I called over the manager on duty. My supervisor had enough and told the guy he could care less if he was an older than dirt alcoholic. He'd be glad to sell him the alcohol...once we saw the ID:lmao:

I'm 26 and some places card me, some places don't. I've often found that I'll get carded depending on who I'm with. A bar next to my work never cards me when I'm with my work friends, they're so used to us coming in at least once a week, but if I go on one of my nights off, out of work clothes, and with friends that never go there, I always get carded.

I agree, I think for some items it must be a requirement.
Last weekend I was buying DayQuil at Target and got carded.
I'm 50 years old!! :rotfl:

That's because they take your license, swipe it and type in something on the register off your license.

DH and I still get carded when buying alcohol and stuff like that. Not so much at restaurants, but in grocery stores for sure. One time was kind of weird though (and I understand the thought process here but not sure if it's REALLY a fair rule). DH and I made our bi-weekly grocery shopping trip and got some beer along with that. The lady at the check-out wanted BOTH our IDs even though DH was the one paying. Granted, it was a grocery near the university and was pretty much nothing but college kids in there. But I mean, shouldn't the person PAYING for the alcohol be the only person who should get carded? I don't remember this being a law or suggestion when I got my liquor license. It was definitely something new to me and thank goodness I had my purse with me (because that is not the case many times)!

In Indiana, you would have to be dead. :rotfl2:
All businesses that sell alcohol here are required by law to card for every purchase. Wouldn't matter if it was my 96yo grandmother. They have to card every time.

Georgia too. I was in Alpharetta on business. Two co-workers and I went to a Macaroni Grill for dinner. While waiting for a table, we went to the bar. All three of us are mid-40 to late 50s. When the bartender took our order, he asked for ID. I was stunned and thought he was kidding. He told me that it's the law in Georgia.

Take it as a compliment OP. I'm 31 and get carded and DH is 37 and gets carded. Everyone is just trying to cover their butts these days. Can't say I blame them. :)

And to a previous poster, YES sometimes it IS a compliment. Not ALL states and not ALL venues are required to card everyone. I know it's not like that here in NC because I have worked in a grocery store in NC. It's hit or miss. So if they decide to card me, I take it as a compliment because they weren't sure if I was over 21 or not.

What's frustrating is being in a large group at a restaurant and you're the ONLY one that gets asked for ID. The waitress said they carded "if you look under 35." And everybody else doesn't? Wacky judgment call, IMO.

I guess I don't take it as a compliment because it's been the bane of my existence all of my life. Looking too young can be great as you get older but growing up it kept me out of movies, clubs and from buying lots of stuff. I know I look young but at my age it's still kind of old to be proving it to people.

I went to lunch with my 80-something parents recently and my Dad was carded when he ordered a beer. He said, "Am I too old to drink now?":thumbsup2

Im 45 and got carded the other day. Ive been after DH because I want to get my eyes "done".. Well, he is now using that to tell me I don't need it....

Tell your dad he is awesome. lol

Some places, like T.G.I.F., we get carded every time we order alcohol and we're both in our mid-50's. But, we live in a rural town and we don't get carded when buying bottle/can alcohol in the grocery store. :confused3
