Would love suggestions where to shop for my dd. She is 13 but on the small side. We're struggling to find clothing that fits but doesn't look "babyish." Most of the styles in the girls 6x-14 range have puppies and unicorns. Any suggestions on where to shop?

Dd18 has always been a fashionista and she was very small at 13 (probably around 4’6, 80 pounds. Dd16 wasn’t as short, but very thin. They exclusively shopped at Abercrombie kids, Tilly’s kids, and Forever 21 kids. Thank goodness for those stores. She finally hit 100 pounds at 16 and topped out at 5’3”.

DGD is also petite for her age and with it has found the "defect" teenagers can be overly sensitive about. The other day I was mulling over what holiday cookies to make and suggested shortcakes to her. This elicited a quick head swivel and an accusatory tone in her voice as she asked why I was making fun of her. Oh dear. Showed her a recipe for them in one of my cookbooks and she was mollified for the moment, LOL.

I find most of her after school gear here (she wears a uniform to school):

Her special occasion and church clothing tend to come from here if they aren't custom made ( I sew):

GL with your munchkin. Wait! That's another insult...;)

Thanks everyone! You have given a lot of good suggestions!

LongLiveRaffiki - I thought she would be the smallest size in juniors too but the clothing just hangs on her. It seems she is stuck somewhere between a size 12/14 kids and the xs or size 0 in juniors.

NYCgrrl - that's too funny! My dd is shorter than her brother who is 21 months younger and people ask her all the time if she is the younger sister. She gives them death stares!

I understand exactly where you're coming from. My daughter is 14 and on the small side. She was born very premature (weighing 1.7 pounds) and the doctors have always said to me that she is going to be on the petite side. Finding clothes that fit her and that don't look like they came from The Children's Place has been challenging. My go to store is Abercrombie Kids. We always find something there. We've shopped Tilly's before (mainly for sneakers and a couple of shirts) but I was just in there the other day and it's really gone down hill. Very little choices and I couldn't believe they still have summer clothes out. We have a Vans store in our mall which my daughter found some comfy shirts. And I just purchased a nice sweater at American Eagle in an XS for she liked to put away for Christmas. My daughter is 14, but like I said, small. She's just starting to be able to fit in some (not many) XS in the more "older stores like American Eagle. I am very much about being age appropriate so no mid-drifts or plunging neck lines.

I used to be very small in my mid 20s to early 30s, but I loved fashion, most especially shoes. I shopped at Nordstrom rack and places very similar. When I realized I could wear kids clothing and sometimes shoes (mostly Uggs) it opened a whole new world. I also shopped a lot online at the discount designer sites. Ruelala, gilt, modnique. There are a ton of them and if you know your prices, you can really get amazing deals. They always had/have deals for kids. Admittedly, it’s been a long time since I shopped like that. I got pregnant at 31 and completely ballooned. I have yet to lose the weight. My shoe size has also changed. Anyway, my point is I found the best deals online and places like Neiman Marcus Last Call. Oh, and TJMaxx!!

Thrift stores - you have to try everything on, so you see how vastly different the brands make their sizing.

My daughter is soon to turn 13, we’ve been having the same issues, but Abercrombie and Holister definitely fit. 00 jeans and xxs or xs shirts. We’ve had more luck with shirts than jeans. Abercrombie kids has a decent selection also.

My kiddo is 14 and very small(4'11"/100lbs). She is able to convert to juniors sizes in most stores but it's a challenge.

Hollister has crop pants in the summer that have a 27" inseam. That's actually PERFECT for her. So shes a size 1 with a 27" inseam and it is much more flattering because kids sizes look kind of boxy on her (as shes developed). Tops are easier as shes petite but well developed on top (30d bra), so she can comfortably wear XS/S tops in juniors.

Forever 21 xs works for her well, as does Hollister. That's pretty much it. Oh! And target. Target has a fantastic juniors department

I have a 12 year old who wears a kids 8 pants and 10/12 shirts. She is just starting to get sensitive about her clothes not looking too babyish.

We've also had lots of frustrated trips the past few years to find things without sparkles and unicorns that really fit well. My biggest challenge with a petite DD (now 17, topped out at 5-2 1/2 and about 90 lbs) has been jeans and swimsuits. Shirts are easier to find XS in juniors, depending on the cut. Clearance racks often have the biggest and smallest sizes. I can't tell you how excited I was when she filled out a bit from size 00 to 0 in jeans!! I am also lucky to have a good friend who will alter some things for her, like her bridesmaid dress for her sister's wedding.

I would be prepared to relax any clothing budget a bit for her, so if she finds a style that actually fits but is a little pricier you just BUY IT. And buy two if possible. A couple time when my mother has visited near her birthday or Christmas we have all gone clothes shopping together for her and grandma is willing to buy the pricier boutique stuff as a gift.

Do you have a kohl's? They have a good juniors section. She would fit into xs. I shop the juniors at Kohls and just get a large since they have a lot of disney shirts!
