Aside from cupcakes, what food can I send in to school for birthday?

I'm looking for easy ideas of what to send in for my daughter's birthday at school. I usually do cupcakes but I don't want to do that this year. Anyone have any cute ideas of something different to send in?

I used to make mud in a cup for my kids in preschool...

Jello instant chocolate pudding (mud)
Crushed oreos (dirt)
Gummy worm on top

The boys' loved helping me make it and the kids loved it.

Rice Krispy treats. You can use cookie cutters to cut fun shapes. Then outline them with the frosting in a tube. (Works like a pen.)

If the teacher allows, you could do pizza or sandwiches.
Cookies decorated with a balloon on it.

My DS came home from school the other day and he was very excited that Jack's mom brought in "warm" Krispy Kreme donuts to celebrate Jack's birthday. I usually do the cupcakes as well but we have seen chocolate chips cookies (from a bakery), yogurt cups and hoodsie ice cream cups.

I've done cupcakes, Krispy Kreme (just the glazed kind), rice crispie treats, brownies and cookie cakes. All went over well, but the Krispy Kreme's were the biggest hit. Something about eating a donut in the afternoon that kids think is totally cool!

Here in Texas we aren't allowed to send sweets to school for birthdays anymore. Something to do with a new nutrition law to prevent obesity in children. Now, the teachers get to pick one day a year that the class can have sweets. Sad, very sad. The cafeterias are also restricted in what desserts they can serve.

That's sad to hear. Schools should take a look at the lunches they serve!!! :crazy2:

When I wasn't in the mood for baking...although I do like making cupcakes to send...I've sent Dunkin Donuts Munchkins. They've always been a hit.

In Minnesota the Dept. of Health has had a rule in place for aobut 16 years that says you can't bring in home made treats. It had to do with food poisoning. The school, child care center, etc. and parent wouldn't be liable if it was store bought.
However, I've been associated in one way or another with several place that ignored that rule.
We've taken in sugar cookies from the bakery  (I could've made 'em cheaper at home!) donut holes, ice cream treats, candy bars... When I asked the teachers for ideas they'd always say NO to cupcakes. Too messy. 'Course that was kindergarten/1st grade age.

most kids in our school will send in treat bags for birthdays. they discourage snack items and ask that you bring in treat bags.

If you don't want to MAKE cupcakes, my former co-worker's sister used to buy Yankee Doodles and ice them herself. She said it went over great.

How old are the kids? When I taught preschoolers, the BIG hit were donut holes. Parents would ALWAYS bring several dozen donut holes, and those things were GONE. Brownies, cupcakes, and cookies weren't touched. Krispy Kremes are another good idea.

Brownies
Rice Krispy Treats (I love the idea of frosting them!)
Brownie Bites
Twinkies
Cookie Cake you can write a message on (EASY to make with prebought dough)
Cookies

=)

Depending on the amount of kids in the class, you can make birthday pizzas. Bake brownie mix on a round pizza pan. Color white icing red for sauce. Grate white chocolate on top and throw on different candy - m and m's, chocolate chips, etc.

I buy empty pizza boxes from the pizza place for added effect.

5yo DD wanted to bring in donut holes from Krispy Kreme for her birthday. Well - who knew - KK doesn't sell donut holes! They make their donuts in a ring shape without cutting a hole. So the kids got whole KK donuts instead.

My kids classmates love it when I bring in HOT Krispy Kremes in the AM (so do the teachers, they chase me down the hallway, even the ones that aren't my kids teachers!)

My kids love making this with me and is a hit with their friends!! :)

We did the rice krispie treats...easy to make and I would think most kids love them. I never thought about using cookie cutters though! Great idea!

I know my girls also loved when someone brought in the donut holes...that was always a big hit.

I have sent candy bars that I made wrappers for that included my kids' picture and the words: "Thanks for sharing my birthday with me!" Everyone thinks I have them custom made but I just use Microsoft Works and insert the picture and the text. You can use Nestle Crunch, Hershey Bars, Kit Kat, etc. The whole class thinks it's so cool and it is sometimes cheaper than cookies or cupcakes if I catch the candy bars on sale.
