Parents of the Class of 2019

It's getting really "real" here. - We're two weeks out, and it seems like just yesterday, we were at three.

Right after orientation, he was very excited to go, but right now I think he's going through a "what will I do without..." phase.

I'm kind of wishing we'd paid to move DS in a day or two early, too. I am not looking forward to traffic and crowds, but I'm also glad to have him for a couple of more days. We're down to 10 days now, and... argh!

The beds in DS's room are "low lofted" (30" from the floor.) The school supplied dresser will fit under the bed and a lot of people gt those plastic three-drawer cabinets to fit under the bed, too. We did that and have been able to fit a LOT of stuff in that. (Hopefully it's not too heavy to carry up the stairs!)

We're packing a bunch of stuff in his 3-drawer plastic cabinet. We've got 4 IKEA bags. I filled one with smaller stuff -- towels, folding laundry hamper, the shelf thing we got to attach to his bed, his fan, some of his school supplies, etc. Right now, I've got his bedding set, mattress protector, etc in the packages they came in. Depending on how many clothes he packs, if we have space, I might put those in an IKEA bag too.

As for shoes, I was looking at an organizer that hangs from the closet bar and holds 8 pairs of shoes... but DS is convinced he doesn't need it, so I think we're holding off on ordering that till we see what's going on. I think that's something I could amazon to him afterwards. So I guess right now we're looking at storing shoes in a heap on the floor. I'm still wondering how many pairs he's planning to take. He's a little bit of a shoe hound! ;-)

Moms of boy shoe hounds unite! :D I'm glad I'm not the only one whose kid will just have a line on the floor because that is what he does here too.

PollyAnnaMom, It is getting very real here too. He started packing up his stuff last night, and by "started", I mean barely. He packed up the 5 Pop figures that are on his desk that he is taking with him. I was in there talking to him and he asked me to hand him the box that was on his dresser. I saw what he was doing and I almost cried! I know that sounds ridiculous, but I did.

DS school was $250 to move in 5 days early, to cover meals, he chose not to do this.
He has space savers hangers, we will hang his shirts on them and then pack that into a suitcase and just unload to closet. Shorts - he has one dresser from the school.
This summer, work keep the staples copy paper boxes for me; so those we will use to pack.
His linens and towels are washed and packed into laundry baskets. His sister has a six cube container under her bed. He will have a 3 drawer system for socks, underclothes, pjs.
DD leaves this Thursday, he is next Thursday.
The dorm unloads everything for you and takes it to the student room.

I don't know why I didn't think of the paper boxes from work, we have a ton of them. Thank you! I think my mind isn't working clearly right now. He doesn't have a ton of clothes that he wants to take, and he has a wardrobe and dresser to use in his room. I put his sheets and towels in a bag that another comforter set came in; we have 2 long-haired shedding machine dogs in he house, and the bag keeps them from getting dog hair on them. Although I'm sure he will be taking a few strays with him.

DS' school will have students to unload the car for us and take the stuff to his room, that will help a lot! One tip I read somewhere (maybe even here?) was to label every container with his name, building and room in case it gets mixed in with someone else's stuff.

I really appreciate this thread. The closer it gets, the more I'm starting to panic over little things that probably aren't even really things.

I feel the same way. I've probably packed enough stuff that he'll get by (I'm relying on him to pack his own clothes.) And I appreciate this thread, too. Because of your suggestion, I just labeled all of DS's boxes/bags with his name/room number/phone number. DS's school said they can't guarantee anybody will be there to help *you*, there will be hundreds of volunteer helpers.

I'm not sure how we're going to pack everything for DD, I know that we're buying a lot of it there the day before move in, because I'm not flying it all the way to Boston! We're planning on doing the drop, unload, arrange a little, and go as well. We're making a long Labor Day weekend out of it by heading up to Maine and eating some lobster!

I'm getting DD her own set of luggage (just a large suitcase and a small suitcase), and we'll take our big suitcase and a small one with my and DH's things, then bring our big one home. We're thinking that DD will find a small storage locker for summer break next year so we won't have to bring it all home. If my FIL finally admits that he isn't able to drive any longer, then DD will have his car that she can drive the 3 days home with.

It's definitely becoming real now - first semester's payment is done. :crazy2:

We got a pretty good (we think) handle on what we need to pack. Still need our son to actually go through his clothes to figure out what he's taking and what he's leaving behind. :headache: We took back the mini fridge he had gotten for a grad present and we're ordering one to pick up after we've moved all the other stuff in - saving us lots of room in the car for packing everything else (we hope). :thumbsup2

Meeting up with his roommate's parents Wednesday to try to coordinate some things (we live in the same neighborhood). Or, at least, to :drinking1

FIL is 92 and can’t turn his head to the left, I’m dying to buy his car (2007 civic with very low mileage to join our 2 other 2007 Honda civics in the kids’ fleet).

I haven’t packed a single thing, Dd will do it eventually.

Oh I'm not packing for her either, that's all on her!

FIL's car is a 2013 Nissan Altima, very base level model, I'm surprised it even has a radio, but it's also super low miles as they are snowbirds between NJ and Florida and so it's only driven lightly 1/2 of the year.

The ONLY good thing about DS's dorm was that his math class was in the building next door (both the dorm and the math class's building are far way from everything else.) He just got news that his math class has been moved to a different building across campus. Now there's NOTHING near his dorm. He's still got a good attitude, but... seriously!?

Well, today is official move-in day. And it feels like DD has been gone forever (it's been 11 days). She's so sad to be giving up her quiet building and single room. It will definitely be interesting to see what she thinks of the roomie.

Wishing her the best! Has she had a good experience so far. (DS moves in a week from tomorrow. The first of his friends left Tuesday.)

Thanks! :goodvibes She loves it so far. Of course, she has no roomie and no classes yet, so that makes a difference. I was worried that living in a nearly empty building for more than a week might be isolating and make her homesick, but instead she loved it. She's sad her building is being invaded today.

Good luck to your DS next week! Enjoy those last days with him at home this week.

Just found out from DS that the mystery roommate (he's in a triple and already knows one of the guys) has already moved in. - It turns out he's a football player and they arrive early.

DS is a bit nervous, as he's not sporty himself, so I hope it works out OK.

T minus 11 to move-in day.

Less than a week to go, we've funded DS' account that he can use to buy books, do laundry, etc., we have a pile of stuff in the living room (though he has a lot more packing he hasn't even started), he's ordered a carpet for his room and his roommate said his parents were buying a fridge... and I am feeling SO anxious. Glad he won't be far but still, he won't be in my house every day. He's requested several things for dinner these last few nights and already said his last night at home, the four of us are going to watch Toy Story 3. Rip my heart out!! LOL.
