It was literally TOO HOT TO TROT! - Updated x 2 Thursday 10/16

Hahaha awesome #oops moment with the security guard Elena. Gave me a nice chuckle anyway. :)

HOLY COW THE CHEETAHS ARE REAL???? Seriously, you never see hem actually moving (if you actually see them at all). Great moment!

I have to say that after each visit I grow to love Goofy more and more. I have never had a bad Goofy interaction I don't think.

The Cheetah may have been a CM in a Chetah costume, I am not 100% sure.

I feel very comfortable meeting Goofy. He is so tall that I don't have to shrink down to get a hug!

I'm all caught up and ready for more! :goodvibes LOVE your trip reports! You're too funny and I can appreciate all the time you must spend putting each update together.

You are too kind!! Please PM me or add a reply with a link if you have done any TRs. Another couple in their 30s with no kids who are WDW fans!

love your AK outfit! Was your MB totally wrapped up? Any issues with the sensor?

I am sure that the security guard didn't give it a second thought with how many people from New York go to WDW

I too was very disappointed to see that Donald was no longer in the pre-entry TH photo ... and they also didn't consult me on the decision ... the nerve! :rotfl:

I have only done breakfast at TH but the lunch looks really good too! I've heard that if you book the last breakfast seating they will start to bring out lunch food while you are there and you can kinda get both meals in one

Yeah for seeing the cheetah! and up and awake! That is really exciting! Exclamation points!!!! :goodvibes

I have purchased a lot of duct tape for the MBs! They come in so many patterns! There is no issue with the sensors. I have seen people layer on nail polish and not have any issues either.

The first time we went to TH we had a breakfast ADR for 11am, so we indeed got breakfast and lunch!!

Hi, I have a couple of questions about putting duct tape over the MBs:

Is it easy to remove the tape to replace it with different tape, or do you end up with a sticky residue on the MB?

If you have duct tape over your MB and you go to a waterpark or pool and the MB gets wet, does that affect the tape -- does the tape become more difficult to remove, or does it start falling off, or anything?

Oh, and Tusker House is one of my top favorite WDW restaurants, both for the food and the characters! Breakfast and lunch are both great. I haven't been there at dinner, because I'd rather go when the characters are there!

Will really likes hooters.

Do I have your attention now? He loves Owls! He thinks they are magical creatures and will show me Youtube videos of Screech Owls. So as we were walking towards EE he is distracted by the Flights of Wonder pre-show:

15074318529_103301907f.jpg

So of course we have to see the show now! We saw it for the first time back in October 2013 and enjoyed it. I could kind of do without the whole comedy skit part, but I do realize they are trying to keep kids entertained.

We again really enjoyed the show and I recommend it as a place to hang out in the shade and rest your feet. The birds are really amazing in their natural skills!
I think the one shot we got of the show actually has no birds in it!!

15074496778_6197c465bc.jpg

Just trust me when I say there were a lot of birds to see!

After the show we were sitting in the back, so we made a quick exit and continued our journey towards EE. We got to the part of the journey where there really is no shade and it was pretty brutal. We were so happy to get to the ride to just have a few moments in the shade! Unfortunately, with FP, we were on the ride so quickly we were getting back into the sun as we climbed the first hill within a matter of minutes!

15260857902_ca782cfea8.jpg

Once off the ride, we made it back into the sun and headed towards a FP kiosk to make our next selection, for the FoTLK (never been before!).

On the way to the kiosk, I made a big mistake. A CM came up to me and he says you look like you are on your Honeymoon! I let him know it is our Anniversary and smile and think we are done.

But he keeps talking...where are we staying? Are we enjoying ourselves?

And this is all out in the sun….

giphy.gif

Then he starts asking if we were interested in DVC…..

Ooooooh….that is why he is so friendly. Eventually I say I am melting, so we need to go, but then he suggests we come in his hut with a fan, so we could not turn that down. He was really pushing hard for us to sign up for a DVC info session. He tried to sweeten the deal with 3 free FPs. We were not taking the bait. Then he said he would give us a $50 Disney gift card that “Well, I don’t offer to everyone”. We again turned him down and I think he was ready to give up. I don’t like that kind of pressure! If a DVC contract is so awesome (and I know a lot of people are happy with their DVC contracts) it should speak for itself!

Once we were able to move away from that, we realized we could just catch the next FoTLK show and probably did not need to waste time getting a FP. This turned out to be a great idea and we had no problem seeing the next show.

We were in the Elephant section. I love how this was a new experience for us! It really is a great show. The performers were amazing!

Fire Dancer video

Monkeys!

At the end of the show, we felt satisfied with our DAK day. We had seen most of what I wanted to see, and with the heat, there was not much more we wanted to do. So, we made our way back to WL to clean up for a dinner at JIKO that night!!

We made it back to WL in time to shower and relax a little bit before heading back out to the DAK area. Taking a bus from DAK to the MK area makes you appreciate just how massive WDW is!

Before leaving, we took a picture of our candy haul from the night before. At least the candy left over after we ate the best!

15074315359_64aa3d8f45.jpg

When we got the the AKL, I was really excited to explore it before our meal so we got there with like 45 minutes to spare. We had eaten at Boma in Dec of 2012, but that was at night and we did not explore the resort much at all. This was a total different experience! I really thought the resort was beautiful. And the savannah is such a cool feature. To me it was an example of how creative Disney can be!

We checked out all of the different areas for animal viewing. The pool there is also top-notch! They were doing the campfire at the time, so it even had a rustic type of smell. The smoky smell also got us in the mood for dinner!

We were sat within a few minutes at our table. There was a group of guys that were sat before us and they had to put on these button up shirts before they were allowed to be sat! I guess they really stick to their dress code.

Fortunately, Will and I were appropriately attired, and were allowed in with no muss and/or fuss.

We had a nice view (we were sitting where the person with the blue shows is sitting)
15257964641_f6b721144e.jpg

When I let my server know we are vegetarians, he brings out a whole menu just for vegetarians!! I was so impressed! Will got the samosas and I got the Cauliflower flatbread and carrot soup. I think the soup was my favorite thing out of all of it!!!

15257960491_c85840d162.jpg

I thought the experience was really impressive. There were warm rose scented towels to wash your hands! The staff was all very friendly and attentive. Kind of what you would expect for a high end restaurant! They also have a discount for Disney Visa holders, so this was also an added perk.

Overall, we really enjoyed our time at the AKL. We were thinking about staying here some time. The main drawback for us is that we do not drive while at WDW so we have to use their transpo. AKL just feels so far away from everything else, especially when on a bus! I think we might do it as part of a split stay some day and stay there for our DAK days!

Once back at WL we had dessert that they offered as part of CL (more cobbler please!!) and watched more Game of Thrones in bed. After another long work week, I so miss vacation!!!

Tomorrow would be quite an adventure as it would be Will’s first time on a horse, as well as our second shot at MNSSHP!!

Hehe, I actually like the comedy part, lol.

"Unfortunately, with FP, we were on the ride so quickly" I bet that's the first time that statement has ever been uttered... but I get it.

Oooh see I do not like that hard sell in a Disney park. If you inquire, fine, but that is not cool (no pun intended).

AKL really is beautiful and a great alternative if you want to see the animals without waiting in line.

Ok, yeah, odd complaint, but with that heat, I realized staying in the shaded queue for a few more minutes would have been nice!!

That was the first time a DVC CM ever directly approached me fortunately! They are usually more laid back!

The next morning, we slept in like a couple of lazy teenagers! It was glorious! I think the sun was really taking it out of us!

We were starving, so only another buffet would do! We hopped on the boat for the Contemp. again! We were heading for The Wave.

15261055985_163eb1a1b3.jpg

I asked Will to take pics of the buffet and he did not, so it is his fault I have nothing ;) The food was really really really good. My favorite were these small sweet potato pancakes. They also had great fruit and yogurt selections!

Another stop to Contemporary Grounds before we headed back to the WL!

15074488417_b98b86bde6.jpg

Now we had a lot of time yet before lunch and our trail riding. I am really starting to love this relaxed pace of vacation!! I took my time exploring the WL ground. Even though there was a lot of construction going on, there was still plenty of “natural” beauty to enjoy!

15074485318_f50d25af90.jpg

I’ll spare you from pictures of what I did the rest of the morning, which was just reading in the lobby! This was so fun to do! I also bought some postcards and worked on those. Through a FB Disboards group, there was mom who said she would be going to WDW in about 4 weeks and she was wondering if Disney was going to mail something to her kids, like Mickey sending a letter saying he was excited to meet them. The consensus was that this was not going to happen, but I volunteered to do it since I was going! I got a Princess one for her daughter and a Mickey one for her son. I said something like “I can’t wait to meet you Princess” and her name, and something similar for her son. I thought this was a cool idea and was a fun way for me to spread some Pixie dust!

It really did seem like our chillout time was flying by and we needed to get over to Ft. Wilderness for our lunch ADR! This time we took the boat to Ft. Wilderness. I love the boat transportation options!!

We made it to Ft. Wilderness in under 20 minutes. In retrospect there was no need for an ADR for Trail’s End, as it was basically empty.

15261252495_14131d6c39.jpg

We both got the salad, which was really good. If you like Dill, which we do, the dressing is fantastic.

15074682817_eb8b8c037a.jpg

And then we split the Vegetarian flatbread.

15261252255_6ffc3999b2.jpg

The funny thing was that it tasted very similar to the one I had the night before at Jiko but was like half the cost!! The dessert offerings looked so good, but I did not want to be too full before we plopped ourselves on the poor horses!

Up next, where the heck are we going?

We got some ice waters to go before we went to find the Tri-Circle-D Ranch. I was so excited! I really did try and prepare before we went as to where we needed to go. However, I totally failed at this.

So turns out, Ft. Wilderness is one big massive complex!! Holy Cannoli! I thought the Ranch would be next to where we ate lunch. NOPE. But, the good news is that we had plenty of time. The CMs at Trails told us which internal bus to take to get to the ranch. We did not have to wait too long for the bus, but the actual bus ride seemed to be fairly long. Again, this place is massive! We eventually got to our stop and could see (and smell) our destination.

Yeehaw!

tumblr_n1jsdwEsiR1qcga5ro1_500.gif

Wellll...not quite yet. I was told when I made the reservation, to check in for the Trail Rides “to the right of the check-in desk”. Seriously, this was all I got. So we walked from the bus stop to the Ft. Wilderness Check in area. We were still early, so we sat for a while.

15238245006_c8a6b3243c.jpg

I watched a young girl be named “Deputy for the day”and saw her take her oath! So cool! Little Disney touches!

15260859662_92f38d85ea.jpg

Finally it is close enough to our check in time that I ask the front desk about where exactly we are to check in for the horses. I get “Just head back to the ranch and wait ‘next to where the old Kennel used to be’”. Um, okay. So we head to the ranch:

15260660212_53cf839145.jpg

There are a couple other people waiting on a picnic table, so we join them. It is getting closer to our time and there are no instructions, no one to check us in. I realize after all that water at lunch I have to visit the ladies room, but am afraid to miss the check-in process...but then even more afraid of being miserable during the ride. So I race across the parking lot to again go to FtW check in. By then, I really am second guessing my wardrobe choices. I wore jeans since it seemed like the right thing to do, being a cowgirl for the day and all. But Oh My Good Gravy, I was roasting!!

By the time I made it back, it did not seem like I missed anything, but a woman and her daughter came running up thinking they were late, and another couple told them they “needed to check in first”. OPPS! I thought that is what we were waiting for! Why didn’t anybody mention this to us?! So turns out there is different place to check in, to the right of the actual Ranch. We still made it in time, but it would have been nice if there were some signage to let you know where the heck you are supposed to be going!

By the time we got back from properly checking in, they had started to hand out smelly helmets and assign horses.

15074355780_f98c2b9c9a.jpg

I got Ditto.

15074304229_0557dd269d.jpg

Apparently, he is really named Smokey, but since there are two Smokies at the ranch, he got to be Ditto!

Here comes Will’s horse, Achilles! He was the biggest of the bunch!

15074354410_f1f4b0db19.jpg

I asked our Trail leader at the end about the history of our horses. The cool thing is that Ditto has carried Jasmine in Parades and Achilles would carry Aladdin. Awwwww. I asked if he had ever been the Headless horseman, and he says he only did it once and would never do it again! He says it is reallyyyyy hard to see where you are going. I mean, having a detachable head would make it difficult I guess. :lmao:

Anyway, back to our ride.

I had previous horse experience. I went to a two week horse camp when I was 12, Camp-Tik-a-Witha, in Mississippi. So, you might say I am a professional.

Will was in front, right behind the trail leader, and I was after Will. Will did such an awesome job. He rode with his back straight and looked really good!

tumblr_ljblyrS9OQ1qiecveo1_500.jpg

My horse kept trying to eat everything green. It took a lot of strength to try and veer him back on course. The trail guides would shout out orders and directions. Two younger girls seemed to struggle a lot. I think their horses sensed weakness and thought “Mealtime!!”.

After about 30 minutes, I was getting pretty hot and there was not much scenery at that point. It might have been the wrong time of day, but we did not see any wildlife (besides tadpoles in the puddles of water!).

I was actually kind of relieved to see that we were nearing the end! Our trail leader took a few pictures of us together at the end, which is funny because you can see Ditto start to walk off.

15261051165_ea2ce80ba1.jpg

15261047465_2967a37f9d.jpg

So then Will got a picture of just himself.

15260653042_59bef055cb.jpg

While I got to show off my master Horse skills. Ditto, “Nomnomnom”.

15074476618_ea5cbb691c.jpg

I’ll sum up Will’s perspective of the ride with his description: “That was both disgusting and interesting”. Also a gem: “We are not going to have to do that again, are we?”. Obviously he did not spend a lot of his childhood playing My Little Ponies and fantasizing about a horse of his very own!

giphy.gif

I really liked the experience. I think it is the most dangerous thing I have ever done in WDW!! No lap-bar. A death waiver had to be signed! I think if we do ever do it again, it will be for the first ride of the day and when it is much cooler weather!

We handed back our now even smellier helmets and caught the bus back to WL.

We sat in silence in the cool bus. All I could think of was getting some water! We stopped off at Roaring Forks (BTW, I just mistyped that and had “Roaring Dorks”) to get some waters, and coke zeros. Soon after cooling off, we realized we were starving and bought these babies!

15257947581_440b51d986.jpg

15261034665_03bbe51fc6.jpg

We are always saying “We’ll just have a couple bites. No way we can finish this.” Five minutes later the dessert...cupcakes...large pizza...you name it, is gone!

After our health conscious snack, we went up to our room to take cold showers and get ready for our second shot at MNSSHP!

Wow you went to town with the updates! I am now caught up. First let me say Boma's and AKL look amazing!! WL looks nice as well. It may be a toss up between the two for our next trip to Disney. Your Vegetarian Flatbread looks really YUMMY!!!
Being a horse lover I really enjoyed your post about horseback riding. Trail horses are trained to be follow each other at a crawl. If you really want excitment come ride my 16.2 hand Percheran which would make Will's horse look like a midget LOL!!! My horse is a draft horse which I ride Dressage w Dressage is known as the dancing horses. If you know anything of this sport you would realize how ironic this is for a Draft horse. Although he is like riding my sofa LOL!!!

I just have to get one of those cupcakes!!!

Loved your updates - I am still looking at your photos with a keen eye trying to find ourselves in them - :rotfl:

And OH MY GOODNESS - I am so excited to see about your trail ride as DH and my Annie went on it just the 2 of them. Of course they couldn't take pics as that would require my DH using a camera  and I was kind of bummed that I didn't get to see what it was like. But now, thanks to you, I can!

And even more amazing - and I am wayyyyyy too excited about this - my daughter rode Ditto! :rotfl: If I squint just right when I look at your pics, I can imagine it's her. She also commented that he loved the green stuff - :rotfl2: So thanks for the pics!

Enjoying the rest of your report very much also.

Aww Elena I absolutely ADORE that you did that postcard exchange. That is so sweet. You may not think it's a big deal, but I bet they absolutely LOVED it!! Gah, love that so much!

I've never been to Ft Wilderness, but I have heard of it's massiveness.

Wow, that whole process seems really confusing. That's really not like Disney generally.

"Ditto" HA, that's cute.

OK. You just blew my mind. I had to google and youtube both "Percheran" and "Dressage." I have never seen Dressage before! Who know it was an Olympic sport?! Well, you probably. Those horses are dancing. And then to imagine a Draft horse doing this?!?

See, I think if I had a Draft horse at home to dance with, I would not feel the need to leave on vacation so much! So cool!!

No...freakin'...way. DD and I both got Ditto? You mean Ditto on Ditto?! The chances of that has got to be low because there really are a lot of horses they rotate in and out. You would have thought they never feed that horse with the way he was grazing the whole time! I also eat everything in sight when I am in Disney, so can't blame the guy. ;)

I think the postcard thing was actually pretty selfish...as I had so much fun doing it!!! It would be a cool program to run through the Disboards somehow. If you are going on a trip soon, connect with a family to send a postcard to them before their trip, and they do it in return for the next family...so on and so forth!

I think we both feel the same way about AKL. I really hope to do a short beginning or ending 2 night stay there on a trip in the near future!

So now I need to go to Jiko and Trail's End. Both meals looked great!

Really enjoyed your laid back morning. We are definitely in the camp of taking more "vacation" like trips the more we go so I enjoy reading about others doing the same.

Haha! How confusing the whole check in process was for your trail ride! Glad it all worked out.

Hoping your 2nd MNSSHP is amazing!

I'd love to follow along! As your favorite characters appear to be Goofy and Eeyore, there's no way that I CAN'T follow along on your trip report!

I'd love to stay at the Wilderness Lodge one day. It's one of the few resorts I still haven't seen in-person - I hope to rectify this with a meal or a visit there during my next trip. ::yes::

Believe it or not, I never felt that the Animal Kingdom Lodge felt as far away as the books and others made it seem. The only trip that felt long was Magic Kingdom, and depending on your resort layout and travel pixie-dust, I don't think we took that much longer there than other resorts I've visited. With the exception of a few days, we used the Disney transportation exclusively. I'd encourage you to give it a try sometime!

I'm looking forward to more!

Jiko's atmosphere is definitely more impressive than Trail's End, but you pay a big price for that!

You are right. I bet the bus to Epcot and DHS would not seem so long. Since we were taking the bus from the MK area and back, it was 40+ minutes!! The bus also stops at Blizzard Beach.

How cool you are an Eeyore AND Goofy fan! I thought that was an unusual combination!
