We had a quick breakfast in the room again, and headed off to Animal Kingdom.
Mid-morning Tony was peckish so stopped and got a funnel cake from the stand in Camp Minnie-Mickey. There was no one in front of is in the line yet it was over 5 minutes before the funnel cake came out – man they are slow!!! It was also the most deformed funnel cake I have ever seen!!!
I only had a little piece as I find these too greasy and this one did nothing too change my mind. It also wasn’t the best one Tony had ever tried “Average, slow, and not enough sugar, 6.5/10” . . . not a massive hit! He really wanted the one with strawberries and cream but that didn’t count as a snack credit any more.
Lunchtime was Yak and Yeti counter service. I had been dying to go here ever since it opened, but last year Tony insisted on Pizzafari . . . well it was my turn this year!
All the seating for this restaurant is outside, with no natural shade whatsoever, and less than half the tables had umbrellas on, so eating was a bit of a nightmare. I can’t believe in a place as hot as Florida they haven’t put an umbrella on each table! We were unlucky enough to get a table without an umbrella, so they lose a point for that!!! I was dying and I can tolerate heat more than most people!
On to food! I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, and Tony ordered the Asian Chicken sandwich, we both ordered the frozen lemonade for dessert.
Tony thought the sandwich was OK, just an average chicken salad sandwich – nothing special but nothing nasty – 7/10.
But my sweet and sour chicken – oh my oh my!! This was the first food I had really fancied in two days and every bite went down well. Absolutely loads of chicken (Tony ate quite a few bites), which was very fresh and hot, and the batter was nice and crisp. Lots of rice. I could have done with a little more sauce (which was really tasty) and vegetables, but on the whole this was my best meal of the trip so far, and I think it would quite happily have fed two people. I would definitely order this again. 8/10
This is it tipped out in Tony’s sandwich container so you can see how much there is – I was trying to cool it down!!!
The frozen lemonade was nice and refreshing – it was never-ending though! We both left about half of it.
On our way back to the hotel we stopped at POR for one of my favourite treats – the magic cookie bar. This has a biscuit base, and is topped with nuts, and chocolate and peanut butter chips, and baked with condensed milk – I put it in the fridge in the room and ate it over the next few days (I always think its nicer chilled!) – this gets a 10/10 – I think its my favourite snack in WDW!
As we were there Tony got a chocolate cupcake – he said this has “very good frosting, but the sponge was tasteless – 7/10”
That evening was one of our favourite buffets – Crystal Palace, we always go back here for the characters and for the coconut flan!!!!
Our ADR was for 6.20 and we were seated in under 10 minutes – a record for Crystal Palace the last few years! For the first time ever we were seated on the right hand restaurant instead of the left . . . I felt very lost on the wrong side of the room!!
We were both starving, and much to Tony’s disgust Pooh and Piglet were both in the room so I made him wait to meet them before we went up for food!! The characters were a bit of a let-down here tonight to be honest – Piglet was the only one who really played around.
First plates! This is mine . . .
The roll was lovely. Wholegrain with seeds and fruit (I think cranberry); this was really sweet and tasty. I would have eaten another but I was saving room for you know what . . .. Next to that is a very nice potato salad, a pasta salad, and rather randomly, two meatballs from the children’s section on the buffet, which I really enjoyed.
Tony’s first plate – he had mac n cheese and meatballs from the children’s buffet and liked them both. Salad with ranch dressing which he can’t remember eating, and potato salad which he liked very much. Also a roll.
On to the entrees. This is my plate –
First of all a massive ole splodge of mash potato – I love the mash they do here! I could have filled the plate with it – really creamy and soft. Lovely! Broccoli, nice enough, nothing special. Next is rice with pork and mushroom – I don’t remember seeing this on the buffet before, it used to be some sort of shredded pork dish? Anyway this was much nicer, had a really good flavour. Then we come to my favourite , the prime rib. Ohh I love this!! It was as tender and tasty as ever – a little fatty around the edges but I cut that of. I also indulged in a chicken nugget – I never eat anything like that at home, and it went down very nice! The chicken seemed really fresh.
This is Tony’s next plate.
He wasn’t very keen on the pizza, not much flavour. He liked the chicken nuggets. He really enjoyed the prime rib. I can’t believe he didn’t have any mash!!
On to what I had been waiting for . . . every year I walk in filled with dread that the coconut flan will be gone, and can’t settle until I have sneaked over to the desserts for a look. Phew!! Its still here! You will see on my plate not one, not two, but three pieces of the coconut flan. Such piggery in unforgiveable bit what can I say – this is my top treat!! I ate all 3 pieces and sent Tony up to get me a 4th – ohh the shame!!!!!!!! Perfect wibbly-wobbly texture and lovely soft coconut taste. Because of that I really didn’t have room for the other two desserts on here – there was a cinnamon and pumpkin cheesecake (front of plate). I love cinnamon but this was really overpowering and not very nice. The other item is a keylime
tart.
This is Tony’s dessert plate.
Apple and cinnamon cobbler which was nice but very cinnomony; carrot cake, and icecream. Tony gave the meal 9/10, and the desserts 8/10.
We finished the meal with a nice cup of tea. We had had a very nice evening!! I give the meal 8/10 as a whole (with a sneaky 10/10 for the coconut flan!!). We then rolled to Wishes and were – as usual – far too full to enjoy watching it!!! My tummy was back in business!!!!!!!!
Up next . . . Lunch eating around the world at the F&WF, and dinner at Ohanas.
