Refurbished Red Stagecoach Returns to Frontierland in Disneyland

June 21, 2023byShannen Michaelsen

The red stagecoach has returned, looking refurbished and repainted, to the Frontierland pathway leading to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. The stagecoach first became a part of Frontierland scenery around the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, then disappeared about a year ago.

The stagecoach is in a fenced-off area right next to the walkway. A stagecoach ride was part of Disneyland on opening day and while this coach looks vintage, it’s not one of the original coaches used at Disneyland.

Before it disappeared a year ago, the coach looked more dilapidated than it does now. It’s received a bright red coat of paint and some replaced parts.

As before, “Wilderness Expeditions and Delivery Service” is painted on the door. When abbreviated, this is the WED Service, with “WED” referring to Walter Elias Disney. WED Enterprises was also the original name for Walt Disney Imagineering.

The fictional organization is connected to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.), another fictional organization with references across Disney Parks that originated in Tokyo DisneySea.

The style of lettering on the stagecoach has also been connected to rival theme park Knott’s Berry Farm, with the “W” specifically looking like the “K” in the Knott’s Berry Farm logo. Knott’s Berry Farm has operated the horse-drawn Butterfield Stagecoach attraction since 1949, before Disneyland even opened. Whether the similar lettering is a coincidence or a purposeful reference is unknown.

Sticking out of one of the stagecoach windows is a cane.

A hat and a cane with a curved handle are also inside.

One of the pieces of luggage atop the stagecoach used to be addressed to Jason Chandler, but this tag has been removed or is no longer visible.

Jason Chandler is a fictional character who was to have been the founder of Discovery Bay, a land proposed by Imagineer Tony Baxter that never came to be. Chandler was incorporated into S.E.A. history as the organization’s president and the inventor of the drill used at Big Thunder Mountain. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is itself said to be in the town of Rainbow Ridge. The original Disneyland stagecoach ride was at one point known as Rainbow Mountain Stagecoach Ride.

The stagecoach is near Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which is where Discovery Bay would have been.

There are still several suitcases and bags atop the stagecoach, and one large trunk on the back.

Though Disneyland doesn’t have many references to S.E.A., the upcoming Adventureland Treehouse does have a S.E.A. flag in concept art, implying its story may be connected to the organization.

The color scheme of red, yellow, and black matches the colors of some of the original Disneyland stagecoaches.

San Fransokyo Square, the dynamic mash-up city from Big Hero 6, is opening to guests inside Disney California Adventure Park later this year. Disney has shared that beginning in mid-July, Lucky Fortune Cookery and the Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería will officially open. In the following weeks, more dining locations, unique shops, and more are set to open as the transformation continues through mid-August.

Disney has confirmed that there will be a meet-and-greet featuring both Hiro and Baymax outside of the Hamada Bot Shop in San Fransokyo Square. Guests may also see some upcoming inventions in this location, as this is where the Big Hero 6 team will create their hi-tech gear.
When the transformation is finished in August, additional locations such as Cappuccino Cart outside the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge and The Bakery Tour “will be decked out in street art and colorful banners celebrating the Big Hero 6 team after their victory over Yokai.”

Aunt Cass Café, the second bakery café operated by Hiro’s loving aunt, will serve dishes and soups (in freshly-baked Boudin sourdough bread bowls) inspired by Japanese cuisine.

Rita’s Turbine Blenders, a giant drink dispenser, will serve margaritas and icy beverages. “This refreshment stand is owned and named after the repair technician who maintains the floating wind turbine, resembling a giant koi fish, that sits atop the structure.”

The San Fransokyo Maker’s Market, pictured in the concept art above, will be stocked with unique apparel, homewares, and more featuring Baymax and friends.
Disney says the full list of new cuisine coming to this area will be revealed soon, so be sure to watch for it!

Okay, so they're changing the name of the Pacific Wharf Cafe - that's fine, but they better not change the menu! Otherwise, this looks all looks pretty neat!

I’m excited for this!

For a land locked theme park... they sure are finding new ways to add more interesting nooks to their CA Parks.
The property adjacent to DLR/DCA can be used for expansion, imo, and it should be. It's for sale at the right price, trust me. And I'd much rather capital be employed in park expansion, rather than wasting it making movies/tv shows that no one watches.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah, you're missing out. DCA, at least, offers a lot that you can't get at WDW. And the castle park has some unique elements, too, though he may think it's too much like MK.

You should try it at least once! Disneyland is definitely the better version of MK. One of the main things I think is "worse" is the lack of "Disney resort bubble" but on the flip side if you have a car you can branch out to eat at restaurants that are significantly better than anything on property.
