Dis Viking River Cruise 10/19 - 10/26/2015

We have gotten so use to ABD that I forgot that we have to make our own way to the airport to get home.>:(

We're close to booking our flights but I have a question for those of you who have been to Disneyland Paris before. A few of the return flights were are looking at depart pretty early in the morning--between 6 and 7 am. I don't want to book those flights if that would mean we'd have to leave the night before. What kind of transportation is available from DLP to CDG airport?
There is a train that you pick up right on property between DLP and their Downtown Disney (Marne la Vallée-Chessy is the station name) and if you catch the High Speed direct train, it's about 12 minutes direct to Charles de Gaulle airport. http://parisbytrain.com/tgv-train-cdg-to-eurodisney/

The only question would be how early the direct train runs on the day you want to travel.

But Charles de Gaulle is a HORRID airport, and it can take forever to get through. I was there over 3 hours early and still missed my flight, standing in various lines the entire time!

...and handle our own luggage!

Yeah, Jeff & John, living outside the Disney bubble will be a big adjustment!

Thanks Toby. It's a huge benefit to hear from someone who has done this before. We really don't want to leave the night before so I'll search out flights that leave later in the day. 12 minutes for DLP to the airport? That's got to be a neat experience. It takes me longer than that to drive to work and its just a little under 4 miles from my home.

You're welcome, although I haven't actually taken the train from DLP to CDG. I ended up doing the DIS-exclusive ABD, which included DLP and the transfers back to CDG. But before I signed up for that trip, I'd done a LOT of research on taking the train to DLP. And walked right past the train station on the way to DTD.

I did, however, actually experience CDG airport. :crazy2:

Kim and I are not doing the add on trip either. We are leaving right after the cruise. We are going to DLP on the Friday and Saturday before the cruise though.

We're thinking about hitting DLP Saturday and Sunday before the cruise portion.

I am missing that so much! The logistics are so unmagical! I've already started the lecture about we can only take two small bags, we have to be able to carry them on the train ourselves! Lord, sweet Jeri and all his clothes and shoes! *bless*

I've done the High speed train both times I've gone. It really is that fast.
Dave look on SNCF.com and see what the schedual is like.

I'm very lucky that I've not had one issue flying in or out of CDG. The three times I've flown out I've had too much time because I get there around 3 1/2 hours early. They have some great shopping in that airport and that can be detrimental to my pocketbook. Lol

Coming in from Florence I had 45 minutes from the time my plane landed to catch the Highspeed train to DLP. We landed I grabbed my checked luggage, headed to the terminal where the Highspeed trains are, bought my ticket at the SNCF office and was on the platform with plenty of time to spare. I was stressed because I did not want to wait another hour and a half for the next train.

Maybe we will see you at DLP on Saturday!!!

I agree the lighter the better.

The train goes 180 mph. It's pretty darn neat. This last trip since it was in winter and I had a big heavy bag I did not take my regular seat. The train was very crowded and the area for your bags was full. I just sat in the small pull down seats next to the door. DLP is your first stop from CDG.

For anyone interested here is a link to a video podcast called "Popular Cruising."

He has a few videos on Viking.
This one is a general overview.

I wish we could do the post days at DLP, but our memories from the exclusive in 2011 will have to hold us! lol Good thing they are AMAZING memories.

Trying to decide between a car service and the transfers Viking offers. Any thoughts?

I've also been researching food tours for pre-cruise. Found some interesting ones. Now we just have to choose! lol

With this being a non-ABD trip, I'm not sure what to prepare for, as far as meals and such when we are in port. Do you plan to eat on board, find something local "in the moment", or pre-plan somewhere to dine?

I'm not sure exactly what we are doing for transfers either. It will either be Viking or Super Shuttle.

As for meals, we will be having breakfast on board and lunches in port for the most part. I think most dinners will be on board as well.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I think I really figured out the area where the boat will dock. The photos are taken from the Eiffel Tower facing toward the area where I took the other pictures.

This drawing from Viking says it's at Grenelle so the port should be somewhere inbetween the first big bridge and the last bridge near the Statue of Liberty.
Viking has not added the Rinda to list on the drawing yet.
I'm wondering if the two boats in the first photo are the old Viking boats that have been running this cruise?

The 4th picture is a map of the area and the last picture is the metro map of the area.
I think the closest metro stop would be to walk down to Javel on the RER line. That's the line that follows the Seine River.

Neither of the boats docked were Viking. :(
I was hoping a Viking ship would be there but no luck. We will be on one of the new Long Ships so I think it will be pretty darn nice. I looked at a couple of videos on YouTube of the new Long Ships and they look great.
The blue ship there is the MS Bizet owned by Grand Circle Travel, I spent some months below deck in 2011 on her. I just wanted to wish you all a happy trip, the sailing from Les Andelys into Rouen (and vice versa) has some of the most beautiful scenery in western Europe so try to be on top deck for them part of the sailings. Unfortantly thats the only advice I can offer because of how my work schedule played out and I never came into contact with passengers.

To be honest it depends on the time of day.
It took an hour maybe a little more in traffic the two times I came in this trip. I came in early during rush hour traffic one morning and the other time was in the evening. Going to the airport very early in the morning did not take very long. I think it was about 20-25 minutes. We drive down the Champs Élysées on the way to the airport and there wasn't another car in sight. It was pretty cool.

Was listening to the news this morning about the value of the Euro vs the US dollar. The consensus opinion was that the Euro will continue to drop and the $ and Euro will soon reach parity.

This was a great video! Thanks for finding and posting

We are probably going to take the Viking offer for going back home. My level of stress on return flights is always so high already I'm happy to pay for easier!

I found a desserts of Paris tour I'm thinking about. It's pricey, but it's desserts of Paris!

I know we'll do breakfast on board and probably lunch out and about. That's my guess right now. Keeping Jeri fed is basically a full time job, so wherever there's food we'll be there!

Would love this!

It'll be so nice having the exchange rate not be killing my shopping joy for once in my life!

We just got back from a trip to Disneyland. We really enjoyed it so much! Several things were closed, but it didn't feel as construction-y and hassled as WDW has been feeling lately. This coming back from vacation depression thing is real though. Paying bills and doing the wash is such a drag!!!!!!!!!!
