Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

Which is why I am FOR "price gouging" during a disaster.

I am not sure I eat 9 pizzas a year.....but some ladies family must have needed them last night.
Again - kudos for Disney being able to serve all those guests for all that time and not run out of food.
This is my personal opinion here but price gouging during a disaster is a terrible thing to do...do you remember the price of gas on 9/11? 9/11 may have not been a natural disaster but it was still sickening to see gas stations raise their price just because they could during a time where people were distraught.

To me the thing that is really up for debate is whether a person considers $13 price gouging or not. $13 isn't in my opinion all that bad..provided each and every person got all the items that were supposed to be included...which I've read wasn't the case.

I'd be curious to know how much food they had left over because as some have noted they were missing items from their meals.

In the end the saying stays true in my opinion..you can always do better. It's not that Disney didn't do great because they did ultimately but they still could have done better in some things. Really though it's rare for Disney to be perfect in people's eyes; it goes with the territory.

I think something to keep in mind also, is the Polynesian has 847 rooms while for example the Caribbean Beach has 2112, Pop Century had 2880. Much easier to manage the smaller number of guests.

The only time all guests are back at a resorts is when most everyone is asleep. It is a huge undertaking to suddenly have everyone there and wanting something to eat.

And Smee was also there at Poly.

The Ride Out teams were assembled by park management using CMs with event level skills and deployed to the nearest resorts. That's why characters at resorts were those you'd find at a nearby park... Army men at AoA, Smee and Hook at Poly, etc.

You simply HAVE to make things the worst case scenario to get people to LISTEN. I was not going to leave New Orleans for Katrina until the weather man I respect the most said LEAVE OR YOU WILL DIE.

Hurricanes are unpredictable and no 2 are alike.
I do agree with that. I live in a place where tornadoes exist and are also very unpredictable. Unfortunately having dealt with them since birth most everyone around me are desensitized to them. Tornado watch? Yeah that's no big deal. Tornado 20 miles away? No big deal. Tornado warning actually going off? Well now that depends on where the tornado was sighted. However, you bet your butt when that sickly green-colored sky shows up..I'm down in my basement. It's honestly sad but the weather forecasters try really hard to get people to take tornado warnings seriously. I'm not sure if one has really had the guts though to say "if you stay in a dangerous area you will die" but that would be a wakeup call. I do however think that having service providers send you weather alerts has helped. The two tornadoes that were really close to my house last year Sprint sent me very loud, buzzing (like for Amber alerts) text messages about the tornado warnings.

Not an exaggeration where I'm from. That's "school is delayed 2 hours."
I know in college the only reason it would be cancelled was if the buses couldn't get up the hill. Most of the main campus was on top of a hill. School was cancelled like one or two times in the 4 years and it was due to ice not snow. College was about 30miles-ish from where I grew up.

I don't remember if in elementary, middle or high school if school was ever delayed due to weather. They would either cancel it or not..but they would wait until just before the cutoff of like 5:30am or 6am. There were times that I was up getting ready for school and then I would find out they had cancelled. The district I was in (along with the other 2 big ones in my area) didn't close very easily whereas other school districts in my area would close at the drop of the hat.

That being said normally where I'm from we do not get that much snow in one period. This was oh maybe 4 or 5 years ago or so but we had like 14 inches (which is a lot for us at one time) and a few days later we got dumped with 12 more inches. That was one of the rare times that it really affected the whole metro. It was just too much so close together to effectively clear it out.

We played nice and got half price rooms.

The MK was supposed to be swamped today but our longest wait was 30 minutes.

We skipped two fast passes because the wait was so short. One of the best days in an amusement park in my life. Crazy.

I'm thinking folks will start pouring in now that MSEP is at the end of it's run. So glad you had a good day.

Yup. We ended up getting 50% off of the weather rate as well. Very, very nice.

Thank you so much for this thread. I followed right along.
I am looking forward to real update on @HopperFan's home, which looks lovely in the pictures.
So glad thins were not worse.
If this had happened in 2010, I would not have got married.

Thanks again to everyone posting in this thread and to all of the CMs that made or stay thru Hurricane Matthew safe and memorable!

HopperFan - I hope that your house is in better shape than you are expecting. My Aunt has a home on Flagler beach that they just finished renovating last October. My family shares your anxiety, uncertainty, and the frustrating idea of things appearing BACK on the honey do list!!!

A few final thoughts...on Thursday when the announcement was made about parks closing, we were at Tusker House. Only folks in the buffet room could hear the announcement. (My husband and son were at buffet, I was at table). No one else told us anything the rest of be day about park closings besides our hotel phone messages. I plan to send Disney a note of Thanks but also offer a suggestion in this area after seeing all of the posts that similar things occurred at Epcot with hearing the message.

Saturday we left the Poly at 7:15 AM to head to EPCOT. Walked to TTC and took a bus there. We road test track twice without getting off and then road Soarin twice in a row (with a few thousand steps in between due to the re-queue!). By 10:30am, we were done either he land, the seas, test track, character spot (not inside out/baymax), and headed to the DVC Member lounge to chill out!!

We got over to world showcase around 11:30 and it was VERY managable. I said to my husband that in a few short hours these nearly empty walk ways would be wall to wall people. At 2pm we got off FEA and the crowds/lines were still very managable! At 4:15 we re-entered world showcase to head to nine dragons. Stopped in a short line for Pluto and then dinner. A little more crowded but not bad. When we left the area at 5:30 it still wasn't bad but was finally filling up- we stopped at the chocolate station and were the 2nd people in line!

Overall a nice day and crowds were more manageable than I expected (but we did make the point to be there early!!). We thanked many CMs for being at work and hoped their homes were damage free!

Interesting how Disney is selling food boxes for 13 bucks.

During Hurricane Charlie I was at the Boardwalk and they were giving out free food in the lobby. They had most of the items that are in current 13 dollar box plus drinks. They even had a free hot food buffet. They just asked that you please take what you needed, no double dipping. Oh yeah they also had Disney characters walking around to calm the children (and adults). Top notch treatment by the BW CM’s.

Maybe it was because the BW doesn’t have any in house dining options everything is on the outside boardwalk?????

Does anyone have a report from the BW? Wonder if they are still doing it.

Stay safe.

So we were at Boardwalk, checked in Wednesday and had a weird but somewhat pleasant experience. First off I'm A DVC member, however I wasn't able to get a room anywhere for this trip - we were booking in July for October. However we got a great deal on Expedia for air and a 1 bedroom villa. So off we go, clearly knowing a storm was coming, but hoping for the best. First off was the unpleasant staff while checking in, while I am usually greeted with Welcome Home, the cast members were very sullen and even muttered the words oh you booked this on Expedia, when I asked was there a problem, I wasn't given an answer just a smirk, I of course went into my normal banter, I know I'm so excited to be here food and wine must be amazing that's why you are so booked. We have a pretty good day Wednesday, aside from mass confusion getting our tickets and in line for our Chew taping, we watched it in the pouring rain, they tried to be helpful by handing out towels and ponchos but only after we were completely soaked. Trust me we were prepared and already had ponchos. I know this was not a Disney related problem, but more on the side of communication between the chew and the Disney staff. Had a lovely dinner back at flying fish and the waitress gave us the best information. She said don't worry your in a safe place and worst comes to worst, they will probably have you all go in convention center for activites and food. Every time we asked staff we were given the Disney smile and everything is open and it's all magical- great for keeping hysteria down. By Thursday morning we knew our Friday night flight was cancelled and rescheduled to Saturday. I tried getting through to DVC only to have all circuits are busy, inquired at the front desk about extending stay and was given 3 different responses, first was again, oh you booked through Expedia with an eye roll, then we were told from a person behind closed doors room rate would be the Florida resident rate, a little over $490. They offered us a room $50 cheaper if we moved to other side of resort and we kind of figured it wasn't worth it to move for that, said to them isn't it easier if we stayed where we were, they wouldn't have to clean 2 rooms, they agreed if we can't get out who could get in. We said book it, I then asked for the total and person at the desk, started to look at screen quizzically, hushed conversations with lead person at desk and came back and said it's $710! So I said wait a minute the woman from the back who I was on phone with said she would do her best and give us a Florida resident rate. I again said can you get someone on the line I'm a DVC member and I can't get through to them , I have points can't I use them and they said we can't. Finally they come back and say ok we will honor the $490 but you have to take it now. We knew we were kind of trapped, but also knew we were safe and said ok. Thursday morning we inquire about flashlights and moving furniture and we were told , no everything is fine have a great day. However we started to hear from everyone except Disney employees that they would probably close early Thursday. We figured let's get out and enjoy the day. We head to magic kingdom, and started to have a nice day joking that the sun was coming out in spurts, at 1130 we get the alert our Saturday flight is cancelled. So back on the phones trying to get a new flight and another room. Agin on the phone for over an hour, we got on mine train ride line and it was a great distraction lol, finally got through to reservations, we could not get through to DVC, and were told hold on, got put in hold for half hour only to be told someone would call us back! We went about our day noticing park crowds getting lighter. So around 1 we thought let's get some souvenir shopping done down main street, then head back to Epcot to get some food in and food and wine festival and then take back entrance to resort. While we were in Christmas store we inquired at checkout and we got a oh yeah park is closing at 5. So we get to Epcot and by this time turnstiles we're already wrapped up, didn't even swipe in. We started to walk to the back have a few snacks - which was a problem because machines started going down and then when we did get food it was cold. Anyway we stocked up on wine and I had the good sense to stop in at the boulangerie in France and got whatever I could carry, couple of nice salads, cheese plate, baguettes, brioche etc. got back to boardwalk, asked about extension for Saturday night, went through the same conversation as the first time, but got room for Saturday, then headed down to store and very calmly was able to buy peanut butter, pancake mix, waffles, eggs, bacon, milk, water, only thing they were out of was bread. All I can say is I'm glad we didn't wait to eat at somewhere on boardwalk, because there were two options, flying fish and trattoria buffets, which I heard were three choices of pasta no protein, salad etc. I get it pasta is easy to make and for large crowds. I think because boardwalk restaurants are outside it was a good call, but hard to manage if you weren't prepared like us. We had a nice evening on the top verandah watching staff take in all the garbage cans, chairs etc and tie everything down. Enjoyed dinner in our room with wine and soaked our feet in the jacuzzi. They had characters in the lobby for the kids, with coloring and games and at no point did it seem overcrowded. Woke up Friday morning , thank goodness it wasn't that bad, same activites and relative calm all around, but very hard to get firm information out of anyone. Housekeeping staff came by with lots of supplies, detergent for wash, towels etc. Enjoyed quite time, and we stood online that night around 630 for dinner at Espn which reopened and it moved quick and had a great dinner. Soooo my take away from this is, I think that Disney should have used the texting function to let guests know about the early closing and not rely on cast members who were honestly trying to do their jobs in the park, serving people, getting them on rides, we had 5 messages on our room phone but we weren't there because we were told to go out and enjoy the parks. I think if more people knew they could have gotten better food options to go in the parks they were in and bring them back. The resorts took care of the kids, however I'm still trying to get to the root of the extended room rates and the constant oooh you booked through Expedia. One last comment, the only thing I couldn't find were coconut patties, I searched all over magic kingdom and Epcot and even the airport and couldn't get them??? Is Disney retiring them? Best information was at airport store, member said they may have been delayed because of hurricane. But then wouldn't they have run out of other Disney snacks? Glad that everyone was safe, this is an streamer situation and I have been through a lot of those illnesses, living in New York for 9/11. I don't care how prepared you are there are always kinks and for the most part Disney did a great job!

Texting or Emailing was going to be my suggestion as well. I thought that there might have been a legal reason they couldn't text (need to opt in?). But I figured they could have (easily?) sent emails to everyone with a FP that was going to be cancelled for Thursday and Friday and everyone with a resort reservation.

I do think that atleast the first message about getting food at the park before returning to the resort would have been best if it was delivered before we all got back to our rooms!!!

I hope you get the reservations / Expedia situation sorted out. I am sure not being able to get thru to DVC was really a significant headache and frustration. I understand that they were busy and also evacuated - but definitely a significant kink in the system. (Haven't been over to the DVC boards this week to see how things are playing out over there!)
