To recap and make sure I understand: if I have the dining plan on my first reservation, but have a room only rservation for my second reservation (all in the same stay) the mug will still continue to work because it is active for 14 days from the first day of my first reservation.

That is correct.

I can pool hop with my mug,

Pool hopping is not allowed with or without a mug. Resort pools are for registered guests of that resort. There are a couple of exceptions listed in this thread.

but am only allowed a certain amount of refills in a certain allocated period of time.

It's not a certain amount of refills. It's just that after you fill a mug you have to wait 2-3 minutes before you fill that same mug again.

As for refills, It is just some number of minutes before next refill- unlimited except for pouring it into some other glass quickly instead of you drinking it.

My mind is kind of blown that such a topic could be controversial and/or that there could be hundreds of pages about it!! Wow!

So.....if I had this mug, which it sounds like I will get 4 of when I check in with the dining plan, could we bring to the parks to get water refills throughout the day? We are not soda drinkers at all, maybe ice tea or coffee, but seems weird to put coffee in the mug.

Without being able to use it in the parks they seem really unusable to me. Like why not grab a bottled water with the quick service lunch that seems more transportable? I feel like I must be missing something here.

If you're never at the resort, like only use it to sleep and shower, then the mugs are pretty useless. We incorporate 2-3 full days as resort days and after the first day of refills it pays for itself.

Man I would love 2-3 days at the resort!! How do I stay away from the parks though!

We realized how much we enjoyed our down days. So we just kept adding them. Ever since we actually come home feeling refreshed instead of exhausted. WDW has so much to offer outside the parks. The resort is part of our vacation enjoyment.

Love my souvenir cup, but didn't realize the way the "24 hour" expiration worked, and wasn't able to use it much on our last day.

Will the refillable mug work for drinks like iced mocha and make your own smoothie like the drinks at Landscape of Flavors?

I thought that the mugs were redesigned every year. When we return in August (mostly annually), we would acquire a "new" mug. The current model was available last August. Does anyone know if the mugs will no longer be re-imagined with updated designs since the RFID will electronically ensure what used to be a visual affirmation that the mugs were purchased for the current visit?

The current design has been around for 14 months. The design before that lasted over 2 years. Nobody knows when they will change again.

OK. Thank you EpcotBill and dansdad. We did not buy the mug last year because of distance between room and refill stations and stations would not be open/available upon return from closing the parks. The current mugs design will be "new" for us when we return in August to stay at the Beach Club Resort. I am looking forward to close access, and we could refill in the morning to leave in our refrigerator when we return after park closing.

Just an update that I saw at the resorts the other day, and I'm not sure if it's been posted here or not. I haven't seen a posting at least. Prices have changed for the refillable mug. If you are not on the Disney Dining Plan and are planning on purchasing one of the RapidFill mugs there is no longer an option to purchase the 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day activation. You can only purchase the length of stay option which has dropped in price from $17.99 to $16.49 plus tax.

While they are calling it a length of stay mug...the manager told me it is good for up to 14 days. I was concerned that it might stop working after we checked out of the room but around the resort until 6:30pm waiting for the Magical Express. No issues.
