Next time you check in, ask Disney if you can pay 85% of the cost of the room/tax. You won't see them jump at the opportunity to take 85%. You'll see how important 15% is to them.
Besides, the percentage differs from person to person, so it's hard to pick one. There is also the Tired Factor.
They're shutting it down at the end of the day. That's the time you most appreciate the monorail. Heck, I remember being at the Contemporary once - I didn't like that hotel, but stayed there to make others happy - I was actually glad to be at the Contemporary for those couple minutes, because it was the first stop and I was tired.
Tired makes a difference, too.
There are just so many reasons that this is a bad idea.
First, sorry you had to "suffer" at the Contemporary just to make others happy. It's such a horrible place.
Which is my point - it's all a matter of perception. Some people are excited to visit WDW once for a trip of a lifetime. Others are upset if Disney does one little tiny thing that changes their monthly trip to the Mouse.
One person is content to have the monorail 85% of the time, the other person is extremely unhappy if Disney takes it away even 0.1% of the time IF that time affects them personally. As another poster indicated, it's how you let it affect you personally that determines the magic you get in return from Disney.
I completely understand the frustration, disappointment and even anger over this issue. It's not ideal and it's not the way things have been for the past several years. IMO, one should take the actions you can such as write/call/campaign Disney to complain and express your frustration. But in the end, if those efforts prove futile, it will be your attitude as to how it affects your vacation. I think if you believe that alternative means of transportation such as buses, boats or walking will ruin your vacation, it will ruin your vacation. It's like a self-fulfilling prophesy.
