I do not understand why the swaps that are current are not allowed to run their course without the threads being locked....

This is just speculation and what comes to mind but perhaps the shares/swaps are a concern because WDW provides all the stuff the swappers are swapping? They rent strollers. You don't have to rent one. You can bring your own and they are free to gate check at the airport. You stay at a value and you want a fridge? They rent them. You don't have to rent one, but they are there for you to rent.
Does anyone think that maybe WDW is tired of storing and lugging all of this stuff free of charge? I know it is a magical place, but at the end of the day it is a business. Businesses are in it to make money. If you want what you want then you have to pay for it. That's just how it is.

As for photopass shares, well they are illegal. No I do not care to argue this point with the sharers as we have been over it a thousand times. So I can see where that is a problem.

I also agree that the BB is here to give people ideas on how to budget. It is not a swap meet. I think this is a great move by the MODS. I rarely go to the BB anymore because it is usually filled with swaps and very little info on real budgeting. Hopefully now it will go back to focusing on budgeting so we can share tips!

I think you may be right.

Why not set up a moderated board for swaps? there seems to be enough public outcry here to justify the resources! Either money changing hands is ok or its not. I just don't see how it is fair to apply the rule to one situation and not the other. If you are going to provide for one group to do it, it should be provided for everyone.

EXACTLY!!!!!

Princessmom29, I like the way you think!! :)

In my opinion, the DVC Rental board is a completely different situation. In most cases, there is a legally binding and written contract between the parties making the exchange so that if something goes wrong, legal action can be taken WITHOUT involving DIS. Its not a 'share', its a business transaction between two parties who are not depending on six parties in between their dates being responsible and ensuring that their specific agreement takes place.

for those wondering about DVC---I think this is the reason that board is allowed.

Thank you, princessmom29. I was just going to ignore the ignorance of that person's remark, but your reply is great. :goodvibes

It wasn't ignorant. If you buy the roof storage thing - I don't know what they are called- I call them the whopper- then you can put tons of stuff in it, not have to worry about rain and still take your stroller.
ETA- People want what they want but they want it all for free.

What if it rains on the way down?? What if the van doesn't have a roof rack?? There has to be a reason it's not strapped to the roof and it is probably b/c it would not be safe to do it!

What if, what if, what if....

Bottom line, if people are not in a financial situation to spend the extra money to buy a stroller or bring one, then they need to rethink spending the money on their vacation. Bring what you need, rent it down there or buy it down there.

We have 4 kids; we drive down in a packed-to-the-max van. I would be hard-pressed to fit a cheap umbrella stroller, much less the double that we need. Yes, I have a cheap umbrella stroller, but when I am at DISNEY, I want a big one that will seat both my pre-schoolers comfortably and that will hold our stuff, which is why I loved the swap.

To bring my big double stroller with me costs the space in my van, which I cannot afford.

I understand your situation now!

When you buy a photopass for $20 more dollars you can order another copy. So from the viewpoint of the DVC point rentals - this would be allowed. One disc is bought for the going rate of $100 presale and all the others at $20.

Nothing to do with my finances, everything to do with my convenience. I don't WANT to begin my vacation at Wal-Mart purchasing a stroller I don't need. I don't WANT to rent a Disney stroller because they are over-priced and they have no storage. I WANT to participate in a stroller-swap that will allow me to use my $15 share of a fabulous stroller week and then leave it behind.

You obviously have never participated in this, nor do you realize the how this small convenience is HUGE for those of us travelling with kids.

Wow, nothing like being on a high horse? Some people have to budget for years for a trip, saving a few hundred on a fridge and a stroller is a huge help. Some people want to take their kids when they are young enough to still believe in the "Magic"

I had one of those roof storage things on the roof of my van properly strapped down and it flew off while we are driving. I would not ever consider using one again.

It is clear to me that swap leaders are NOT making money on these swaps. Stroller swaps, in particular, could not continue long term if a small DONATION is prohibited. In the case of the Royal Carriage Swap, this DONATION is used to maintain the strollers and nothing else. 100's of DISers have participated in this swap alone. I am disheartened that the DISboards has shut the swap down. There is no way it can continue without the DONATIONS of participants.

Snipped for space

This is incorrect. I have read over a couple of these swaps and on one the leader has raked in almost $700.

And like a PP said, cheap umbrella strollers are CRAP. Also like someone said, this is just a liablity thing, I'm sure.

Also, a VERY good point: what about the DVC points for rent???? My gosh, there's a whole separate board devoted to that!!!!! Better remove those threads immediately b/c money changes hands... or I'll call the "rule police"!

DVC members are allowed to rent out their points. Disney gives them permission in their contracts which means they aren't cheating or abusing any system.

Wouldn't the rule police be the DIS??

Strap it to the roof... problem solved :confused3.

If I I decided to purchase the photopass cd, I would consider letting a couple of families who didn't have the money to buy one use mine. Most people buy a spindle of cds any way what is two or three cds and $10 bucks shipping to help someone out. I realize that not everyone would offer but I see no reason why someone who wanted to do something kind for someone else should be stopped. :confused3

As I see on a previous page, the moderator would o.k. any free photopass share so I can't debate that. I've just never seen an offer like this, so I can see a lot of these falling apart. There's no incentive to send the pictures once they are received. There's troubles with a few of these now and the host had been paid. I can see the response now, "well, you didn't pay, so what did you expect"?

There are other places that are running swaps. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find them, and participate there. The DIS isn't preventing you from going elsewhere to find a swap.

But for now, the DIS folks have decided they now longer want to allow it on THEIR space.

The bolded is very very incorrect. Anyone involved with the swaps see how the person's running them are actually using their own money at times to keep the strollers in repair and to replace them. If there is someone who posted they "made" money I would love to see the post.

Current swaps that are free will remain open. If it's not a free swap, then it would be breaking the rules, right? Swap leaders have a few days to decide whether they wish to keep their swap going at no additional cost to future members.

I am also saddened by this decision. I'm sure some people who did not benefit from these swaps are happy to see them go. There are others, however, who enjoyed being a part of them and are grateful to those who were willing to put in their time to organize them and keep them running. I also agree with the idea of having a sub board just for swaps with a disclaimer that it is at the participant's risk. I realize Disney needs to make money and I want them to make money, so we can keep going. However $31 a day is steep to rent a stroller. In the end, I'll abide by the Disboard rules and decisions, but here's hoping the owners will reconsider their decision.

wow... i mean really!!!! some of us like to budget our trip sand give our kids a special vacation with the benefit of not overpaying for a stroller rental or hauling a bulky double stroller from home. these swaps are comprised of good people who try very hard to help those of us save money on a stroller. to take this away is just not fair and very unsympathetic to those of us who need it!!!

I think that the snarkiness directed at the webmasters and moderators is over the line. The Disboards is a wonderful place to share information and the Budget Board is my favorite place of all. The site owners and moderators will never be able to please everyone as evidenced by this thread. I find it amazing at the energy devoted to denigrating the decision to end the money changing hands on the shares and swaps.

If anyone wants to start and moderate their own message board, they are more than welcome to do so. The people who desperately want or need to use the swaps and share could find you by doing a search if you set up your keywords right. After starting a board and moderating it for a time and answering the complaints when a share or swap goes bad, come back and tell us how wonderful the new board and responsibilities are working out for you.

In the final analysis, some posters love the swaps and shares and see no ethical problem with them while other posters feel they shouldn't be allowed. The board owners and moderators have obviously spent much time and energy to come to a decision and asked on a previous thread for feedback. You can accept the decision graciously or not.

I also have participated in a free fridge swap - and I had no idea when I joined how grateful I would be -

the Dis'er before me, it was a face to face swap, was so kind to give over the food and drinks they didnt use! Since we were on the DP I didnt think we would need much, I just wanted a place to put the leftover cake :rotfl: Then DD got sick - and all that food, and sportsdrink became a lifeline -

all because of the Dis.

I'm sorry the Budget Board has caused problems for the Dis, I'm sure it will be easier to moderate w/o all the swap threads starting, or whining when a fridge goes missing, or a photopass share leader didnt send the pictures... instead of being a win some lose some - its now a lose/lose...
