Yard sale..worth it or waste of time?

Done 2 yard sales. Second one someone actually wanted ME to pay him to take an item......and I wish I was kidding. It all goes to Goodwill now.

I don't have the itme nor the patience to go through all my crap, price it and set it up and waste a weekend day.

I just donate stuff.

For me it was not worth it. After the time spent pricing, organizing, making signs, and the waste of a Saturday...we made $37. No, I didn't forget to add a zero.

Ever since then, well, I am lazy and generally don't want to load stuff up in my vehicle and drive it somewhere, so I just put it on the lawn with a sign that says "free", and list it as a "curb alert" on freecycle and craigslist. I have yet to have something not be taken within a few hours.

Goodwill in this area is so expensive that even I don't shop there, and I used to hit the one in my old city weekly. A used, ripped, holey pair of jeans for $8? No way! You can buy a new (although poorly made) pair at Walmart for that price!

When DMIL was moved into assisted living, the family had an estate sale. Some dear friends who are experienced garage salers went over and set things up, priced them, advertised, and manned the sale for two full days. They had some of their own stuff they also sold, but kept the proceeds separate. That's all the pay they wanted. Our family ended up with $1500.

People were lined up down the sidewalk 15 mins before the sale even started. Some people even bought partially used tubes of toothpaste. go figure. One rather "unusual" story -- a woman sat down in one of the arm chairs and couldn't get out -- took three men to pry her out of it. She didn't buy the chair.
