Who did NOT die! Founding member of Team Not-So-Fast and costume addict (Comments welcome)

Holy crap, did I really just abandon this journal before WDW and Disneyland races in January?! That feels like a thousand years ago so I won't bother to recap. Things were fine. Spectating the marathon was awesome. Weather was perfect (missed most of the rain). DL photopass and Ducks parking lot suck. The end.

I have officially signed up for Dopey #3 (and marathon #4), so here we go!

Building momentum for @Herding_Cats idea for a 10K Team Not-So-Fast group costume. Who's in???

I'm flexible on which race too. I just don't want something too tricky to run in, and probably not the half because I don't want to overwhelm SIL with my "internet friends." DH will roll his eyes and probably go along with whatever as long as it's not too nutty.

Also, should we post about this in the MW and/or Costume threads?

Definitely! Feel free to take the lead. I'm also open to which race (maybe not the 5K for same DH-related reasons, though he does love a costume and would probably be in with some convincing).

Reporting for duty Dopey training! It has been a fairly busy summer with short work trips, random weekends in NY and Boston, and even a trip to WDW last week. My org's annual conference was scheduled at Rosen Shingle Creek (near Universal) the summer of 2020 so this was our Covid make-up session. July is not normally a time I'd go to the parks, but when in Orlando! It was actually fun as my coworker and her grown son joined me, and they are Disney folk who travel at the same pace and enjoy the same attractions. Between Saturday evening and all day Sunday, we knocked out all four parks! Sadly, the crazy thunderstorm sat on top of us at Studios just long enough on our last night to cancel Fantasmic, but we were all pretty tapped out by that point. Best of all, I survived the heat! I do think it is easier to acclimate from a home climate with a bit of humidity than it was from the dry desert air of Utah.

Between the conference and parks, I logged 45 miles on my feet last week, so I did not feel one bit of guilt for not running. I've been pretty consistent at getting in at least one or two short runs a week through summer. I've been following iFit series on my treadmill for endurance and recovery walks, and doing strength training once a week or so, and I feel good about at least not losing a ton of fitness since the spring.

A few weeks ago, I dug up an old @DopeyBadger plan from my first Dopey training in 2019, when my fitness and paces were pretty similar to now. I calendared everything out, accounting for some (A LOT OF) travel we have coming up. I'm trying to set myself up for success. Knowing myself and my history, I will not stick to all the training during my longer trips, so I shifted workouts accordingly. I also know I'll walk a lot on those trips, so I won't freak out about "missing" runs and hopefully won't set myself up for injury.

My schedule looks like this, so this was no small feat!
Aug 2 - 3: Boston for Queen of Versailles with Kristen Chenoweth
Aug 8 -12: D23 Expo Ultimate Fan Event (not likely packing costumes but may just take all my Dress Shop dresses)
Aug 31 - Sept 13: Budapest, Brugges & Scotland
Oct 18 -19: Montreal to see Cyndi Lauper
Oct 30 - Nov 1: MNSSHP and W&D 5K
Nov 5 -11: Italy
Nov 28 - Dec 8: Florida family TG & WDW

All that said and done, my official Dopey training starts the week of July 29th and if I stick to what I've got scheduled, I can easily get it all in and be ready by the races.

I had a bit of a scare about a month ago when I suddenly developed plantar fasciitis out of the blue for the first time. I was afraid it was because of my switch to Topo shoes, but I've made some changes to my default around-the-house footwear (got Birkenstocks instead of defaulting to Hoka recovery slides) and it seems to have helped. I'm a tiny bit nervous that my uptick in training will flare it and I'll be on the hunt for new shoes again, but better to find out now I guess.

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else is doing and also keeping this up a bit better now that I'm back on a training cycle. Thanks for reading!

p.s. I need to decide asap what my costume is going to be for Wine & Dine 5K. I'm doing the MNSSHP the night before and I want to do Muppets, so ideally would love to find something I can wear to both the party and the race. Open to ideas!

I was originally planning to do a costume for the party and the 5K, but I started thinking “If I put this costume on at 3 or 4 in the afternoon, I’m not going to be taking it off until at least like, 7 in the morning, and that might get to be a bit gross” So now I have 2 totally different costumes

Okay, goooood point there. Plus what if it rains or something?? It's not like I don't have way more than two ideas anyway.

Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 my home country 👏

Sounds very organised and well thought through plan good luck 🤞

Really curious how that particular itinerary was drawn up?

Hope your training goes well!
As a lot of you know, I've traveled pretty extensively, but there are a few spots I've managed to miss. DH has been to Budapest but I haven't, and we've both managed to miss Brugges. Since we are now on the east coast and Europe is much closer, we decided to tick off a few of our missed spots.

We have been to Scotland several times, and have friends there, so figured we'd end the trip with a few leisurely days up there.

Welllllll... the damn PF is flaring up again now that I'm back and running regularly. I've got a pair of Adidas Supernovas that flared my neuroma on longer runs, but I'll rotate them in and see if that helps at all. I'm also building in more calf and lower leg work in my strength training and stretching more. I may also pick up a PF foot sleeve at REI this week and see if that helps.

I REALLY do not want to be shoe hunting at the start of Dopey training, but I guess this is a better time for it to happen than when I'm doing 10+ mile long runs.

I went digging around to see what my alternatives might be. The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is about to come out and specifically says it relieves PF pressure. I did try on the Ghost Max when I picked up my current shoes and nearly went with them. Anybody know if there's a huge jump in design between the two? Because the Max are on sale all over right now with the 2 coming out. I'm going to post this in the running thread too.

I think if you already tried the Ghost Max and liked them, I'd just buy it, instead of waiting on the 2. Bonus points for it being on sale. I also really like Brooks return policy, so if it ends up not being great long term, you can still return it and try something different.

Oh I wasn't aware of the Brooks return policy, but I like this idea! If for some reason I don't love them, I could exchange for the Max 2 and try those. Thanks for the advice!

On a whim, I ran outside today instead of on my treadmill. It was still cloudy and breezy and only about 73 degrees when I finished lunch, so I decided to do my easy 2 miles out on my little dirt country road.

It was a bit sticky (DP was 63, so T+D=136) but nice to see what my legs would do. There's a bit of rolling hill action, so my cumulative incline was about 100 feet. My "easy" pace is around 15 minute miles, but I tried to go by feel. I was pleasantly surprised to find my run interval paces averaged about 12:35! My overall pace with walk breaks was 14:44, so not too terribly far off from my target pace. And the packed dirt felt nice -- no PF or neuroma flareups (though I did wear my Adidas and not the Topos). At the end of my run my Garmin notified me that it updated my Max HR to 185 -- I think that's good? I didn't even realize I had it set to do that automatically.

A little salamander friend! I safely relocated him to the side of the road.

Well, I definitely know which muscle groups to focus on more in my strength training! My quads are super sore today. I'm surprised as I've been doing some incline training on the treadmill, but apparently that's not enough to compensate for actual outside runs. I do seem to have discovered a nice 2-mile loop that I can mix in pretty regularly, though. Yay!

Dopey plan starts this week!

Monday: rest
Tuesday: 2 miles LR
Wednesday: 2 miles LR
Thursday: Strength or cross train
Friday: 2 miles LR (also driving 3.5 hrs to Boston that afternoon)
Saturday: 3 miles LR (in Boston)
Sunday: 3 miles M pace (driving home)

Here's hoping the PF stays at bay!
