Which Disney "classic" movies...?

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum...

My cousin's sons (ages 6 and 11 - and I think of them/interact with them more like they are my nephews) are both what I would call "potential Disney fanatics"... ::yes:: They have both been on several trips to Disneyland and the oldest has been to WDW. They LOVE the parks. This past christmas I gave the oldest a D23 membership and it was immediately labeled as the "best present ever!". I have attended the past two D23 conventions with my mom and he has proclaimed that he WILL be attending the 2015 con with us. :thumbsup2

My question is this: Both boys have a major deficit when it comes to the Disney classics. They have seen all of the movies from the past 10 years, but have been greatly deprived (in my opinion) when it comes to The Greats. This Christmas I want to enhance their DVD collection and I want some opinions regarding the top 4 MUST HAVE Disney movie classics.

So far on my list of potential options is:
-Robin Hood
-The Jungle Book
- Dumbo
-The Sword and the Stone
- Peter Pan
- Marry Poppins (HOW HAVE THEY NOT SEEN THIS???!?)
- Pete's Dragon
- Swiss Family Robinson
- Bedknobs and Broomsticks

thoughts? Which movies do your kids love? I'm SO conflicted and tempted to buy the lot, but I have student loan payments to think about... :lmao:

Pinocchio!

Don't count out the "princess" classics. My son (8) was finally convinced by DD(11) to watch Sleeping Beauty. He LOVED it!

If you live close by, you could do movie nights and rent the movies. That would save money. For Xmas you could give them admission tickets/invitation to the movie night with the movie title listed. You could make snacks/meals that coordinate with the movie.

Just have to add that my boys (ages 7 and 11) have loved Bedknobs and Broomsticks for years..Not sure why as it's not my favorite... :)

Ooooh Pinocchio is a good one too! Unfortunately I live half-way across the country so movie nights are out.

I LOVED Bedknobs and Broomsticks as a child. I just recently re-watched it... that has to be one of the strangest movies I have EVER seen. :happytv:

So glad to see Pete's Dragon on your list. I just bought it and watched it with my son this past Saturday. Just as good as ever!

Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Lol. We're all princess over here! Peter Pan was a little rough for us to watch with dd(then2), because of the...non-PC? stuff. But I love the story. And 101 Dalmations.

Thanks for the list - I have to see if the library has Mary Poppins. I loved it as a kid and I think dd will enjoy it.

Pete's Dragon is one of my all-time favs. I used to drive my sister NUTS singing Brazzle Dazzle Day at the top of my lungs! :rotfl2:

101 Dalmatians is a another great one! Ugh - so many choices!

They're redoing Pete's Dragon...

Oh goodness. We just watched Mary Poppins after our friends said it was their kid's favorite movie, and it was so awful. The story was sweet, but sooooooo long and slow for a story line! Hope you aren't as disappointed as me.

From the list- Dumbo, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book. I also agree that you should consider Pinocchio. And I think that every Disney addict should watch Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty.

I'm definitely leaning towards Dumbo and The Jungle Book for animated films (although Robin Hood is a STRONG contender... I've never cracked up so hard as a kid as when I watched the Clucky/Kings Guard football game scene) The oldest LOVES the Dumbo ride and I just feel like it's a travesty that he has never seen the movie... I mean... he's probably been staring at Timothy going "who is that weird band-leader Mouse???" :lmao:

I've decided that Mary Poppins is a definite yes (despite a previous poster's assertion that it was boring and too long... ugh. so sad)

I'm also thinking Sleeping Beauty is a good way to introduce them to the Princesses... mainly because it's my favorite princess movie and Samson cracks me up every time. :rotfl2:

I really want to give them two animated and two live-action movies. Your user name reminded me that Newsies should be a contender! Only because it is the greatest movie-musical of all time... :cheer2:

So glad to see Pete's Dragon on your list.

Isn't that the one with all the drug references? I seem to remember something from the movie Meet The Parents where they were discussing that the dragon represented marijuana or something. But maybe that was just part of the joke in the movie.

Anyway, I was a boy who watched classic disney movies. My favorites were Dumbo, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmations, and Fox and the Hound.

If I were going to choose the best movies for a boy I'd add Lion King and Monster's Inc for movies that are more than 10 years old. Snow White would be OK because the boys would like the dwarfs.

Definitely not cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Jasmine, or Ariel. Those are way too girly.

I saw Mary Poppins when I was a boy and hated it. I thought it was a total chick movie.

I love all Dusney movies but others that cone to my mind:

Rescuers
Rescuers Down Under
Great Mouse Detective
Aladdin
Lion King
Pocahontas
Hercules
Little mermaid
Milan
Cinderella
Alice inWonderland
Bambi
101 Dalmations
Lady and Tramp
Snow White

There are tons!!

My almost 3 year old loves Mulan and absolutely adores Sleeping Beauty - weirdly enough his obsession is with Maleficent!! He tells me he can't wait to hug her on our trip lol. He also loves Meet the Robinsons and Beauty and the Beast - he is a big Beast fan.

Bambi and Old Yeller: a right of passage for every kid! How about Herbie?
Snow White is lovely but can be long. Have you thought about Disney shorts? Like Ichabod and Mr Toad or make mine music, melody time, Sauldos Amigos and Three Cabaellos? Or even Swiss Family Robinson or Moonspinners ( that one has Mills as the female lead, but it is action-ish)

This is awesome! That would make for one amazing picture :rotfl2:

Those are great ideas. I think they would LOVE Wind in the Willows:thumbsup2
