My dd will be attending college next fall in Pennsylvania and I want to make sure she is warm during the winter months so which brand is better to keep her warmest or if anyone knows of another brand if you wouldn't mind letting me know.

I've tried both and think North Face wins.

My DD likes North Face, Spyder, and Eddie Bauer. All very good, warm coats.

I've owned both as well....In my opinion both are equally as warm and comfy but generally speaking and depending on style Columbia has way more pockets.

But warmth wise either way you can't go wrong, in my opinion it would just come down to style or look that you think your DD would prefer :thumbsup2

Down is going to be the warmest and that is found in many brands of coats. People here like the 3 in 1 Columbia's because the zip out liner is also a nice fall/spring jacket or the shell without the liner makes a nice windbreaker for not so cold, but windy days. Most teenagers like North Face because that is the "in" brand to have.

I don't think you can say one brand is warmer than the other because they make different styles. It should say on the tag what temperature it's rated to. I have several jackets by north face. The long down coat is great in the city for walking. It's very warm but not too bulky, and really keeps the backside warm. The shorter down jacket is the warmest jacket I've ever owned. I also have the fleece denali jacket, which is good to about 40 degrees. I've seen Columbia ski jackets and they look very nice.

Like others have said, it really depends on what the coat is made of. Both brands have warmer coats and coats that are not so warm. You need to look at the tag and online to see what temperature the coat is rated down to because they will all look pretty similar. My middle-school DD wears a Burton (snowboarder brand) ... when I can get her to wear a coat. I think she went to school today (13-degrees outside) in her Denali fleece. In her fashionable defense, she does get a ride to/from school.

If you are thinking about getting a Columbia you should wait until the end of the season to buy. I would never pay more than 50% of the original price and I can often find jackets in March for 75% off. The North Face jackets are a little harder to get cheap as they rarely go on sale. You *can* get deals at their outlets if you happen to live near one.

Most teenagers like North Face because that is the "in" brand to have.
Having grown up in the 70's and doing a lot of camping during my teens, I find it downright surreal that North Face has become the new A&F of outerwear. Who knew I was so "hip" back back in 1979!

Our DD18 goes to school in chilly upstate NY. We just got her a 3-in-1 North Face and she loves it. She can wear the fleece alone, the shell alone or combine them for the extra cold days. It was pricey, but well well worth it.

The bottom line is that there's no single answer to the question of "North Face vs. Columbia". Both companies make very good products, but there's no "best" answer. In addition, the "best" coat for my daughter to keep warm at school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan's Keeweenaw Peninsula may not be the best choice for someone in more "temperate" Virgina or Massachusetts.

Down all the way! I have this coat from LL Bean: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/42359?feat=504728-GN2

(hope it's ok to post that link!) It might not be fashionable enough for your 18 year old daughter, but for me I like it because it's longer and keeps more of my whole body warm.

I have had one of those 3-in-1 coats from Columbia (with the zip-out fleece liner) and they didn't do much to keep me warm much below 45 degrees or so. But I'm very cold-natured.
