We are ordering take out from here tomorrow night-what's good?

I was thinking about trying their chicken & dumplings, but I've never had this dish-is it fried? Does it have gravy? Are the dumplings like pierogies?

Thanks!:goodvibes

I haven't had dinner at Cracker Barrel in awhile since the one near me has sort of gone downhill in the food department, but I have had their chicken and dumplings. Chicken and dumplings is made with chicken (skinless usually) cooked in a gravy like broth that thickens. The dumplings are little balls of dough. I have found their version to be a bit on the 'gummy' side and not like any of the homemade dishes I've had. It wasn't one of my favorites there but plenty of people get it. I used to always like their pot roast.

It's not fried....it's boiled chicken, mixed with big dough chunks in a lil bit of the dough cream. I like it, but I like grits too!!!

I also LOVE from CB, the grilled chicken tenderloins, they aer marinated in Italian salad dressing and are oh so yumm-o!

We really like Cracker Barrel!
Ours is usually pretty good.
NOTE: we are from the south where they know how to cook these foods.

IMHO, a lot is lost by ordering Cracker Barrel Takeout.
The portions seem small... and, to keep the foods from 'running' (I am supposing) they go light on any gravy, liquids, etc... Everything has a chance to cool off, or get dry. They also put the fresh hot biscuits and cornbread muffins sealed up in a little plastic bag... it steams and sweats and it can kind of ruin the fresh hot bread.

Their chicken and dumplings are a lot like my mom's home-made ones were. (again, from the south) This is Not pasta-dumplings... it is home-made dumplings (made from their biscuit dough???) The chicken is top quality, white meat, little breast tenders (tenderloin). It is all served in a rich, thickened, chicken stock type soup/gravy.

If their meatloaf is fresh (fresh is the key word) I like it with mashed potatoes&gravy, green beans, and their hot biscuits and butter.

Their salads are HUGE, with lots of turkey, or chicken tenderloins, ham, etc.... depending on which salad you order.

Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to have for supper!

DH and I both love the "chicken fried chicken". A chicken breast, fried, with gravy and two side, very tender and fresh. Their corn muffins are good and they also have Root Beer in bottles, cold!!

My kids love this dish!

Wishing On A Star--I do believe that the Cracker Barrels in the true south cook much better. The one I go to is located in Northern VA, about 30 miles outside of DC. The dumplings were those small, tough things. I guess those are pasta style. I'm used to my moms which were big and fluffy and made with a biscuit dough.

I do think though that the biscuits are wonderful. I LOVE having breakfast there with biscuits and sawmill gravy.

Also agree that the food is not particularly well-suited to carry out.

Hmm I recently went and I liked this chicken skillet thing. It was basically chicken, broccoli, cheese, and ritz cracker bread crumbs on top. YUM!

The meat loaf is good. I don't like chickn' and dumplins' but my mama said the CB's is almost as good as hers. Our favorite side dish is the hashbrown casserole. We order that at breakfast, lunch and dinner!

i always get the country fried steak with mashed potatoes, corn and green beens, sawmill gravy on the potatoes and meat.......yummm:thumbsup2

The chicken and dumplings are wonderful...but they are very heavy. I always felt very stuffed after a dinner at Cracker Barrel. They have great breakfasts, too!

ok, now I'm hungry.

The chicken & dumplings are very good. The mac & cheese is the best, my kids love it. Everything I have ever tried there has been good. It is one of our favorite places to eat.

I am a fan of the veggies (green beans, hashbrown casserole, okra and mac-n-cheese are my faves--yes, I know m&c is not really a veggie). I also LOVE their cornbread. I agree, however, that the food is best eaten there!

I always get the roast beef dinner (unless it's a Wednesday). The beef is very tender. On Wednesday's, I order the chicken pot pie, which is also very good--and only available on Wed.

I like breakfast for dinner with eggs, cheesy hash browns and country ham with biscuits...mmm...

If I'm not in the mood for breakfast, I love their fried chicken tenderloin salad. It has hard boiled eggs and cheese, tomatoes and onions. It is really good!

We rarely go there, but stop every once in a while. I'm not a huge fan of the dinner items - I usually order breakfast food (available all day). I do enjoy the grilled chicken sandwich (grilled chicken tenders, bacon and cheese on grilled sourdough bread) and fries.

Friday is "Fish Fry Friday" at Cracker Barrel so you can get fried catfish or cod (the cod is AMAZING!) with 2 sides. We usually get this every week but sometimes we go on Monday nite for fried pork chops (DH's favorite).

We all love the biscuits with gravy or apple butter.

They have a great veggie selection too and sometimes DS and I will split the 4 or 6 veggie plate.

Thank you guys! I think I'll try the chicken & dumplings with some mashed potatoes or mac & cheese.

How are the fried apples???

Not a fish fan.

I've tried breakfast there & love it (blueberry pancakes are my favorite!)-I wanted to give their dinner items a try.

Wasn't that fantastic?!

I loved it. Then we went again the other night and I was hoping to get it. Nope, switched the insert to grilled foods. Dang:rotfl:

Oh who's had the orange soda in the bottle? OMG that soda is to die for i swear.

Never thought of doing CB takeout. I always like being in the restaurant.

This thread is making me hungry. I love the fried apples. If you get biscuits ask for blackberry preserves to put on them its yummy!
