After our wonderful 2 weeks at the Vistana, we'll be going this Friday (aug 16) to Amelia island for 3 nights to give the kids some beach time. I got 2 rooms at the residence inn for 99 apiece AAA, and could find a condo that came in at that price due to booking and cleaning fees.

DH is not a beach guy, doesn't own a bathing suit. Likes museums, churches, culture. What would he enjoy?

In a like vein, what is most worthy to see in St Augustine?

Go on the trolley tour in St Augustine. A lot of history and the guides are great.

There's a lot to see in St. Augustine. Downtown is nice, there are silly ghost tours, several art museums, and Ripleys for the kids.

There's a lovely little downtown area in Amelia, with shops and restaurants. Go there and browse, it's very nice.

The Ritz at Amelia Island has great food and nice bars.

We love Amelia Island. My in laws lived there for several years. If you like seafood there is a place called Singleton's that you take the Ferry boat from Amelia Island side to Jacksonville side or vice versa to get to. It was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It's on the water with the fishing boats out back. The seafood is so fresh. I don't like shell fish and I had a fish called King Clip, it was amazing. The ice tea is awful :( but soda's taste fine. The water in that area is kinda icky tasting.
If you go from the Jacksonville side it's near the naval base and you see big ships. The Ferry boat is a short ride, you can see the other side. There is an old plantation house museum near the Ferry landing on the Amelia Island side. It's fun. Downtown is very historical. Amelia Island was under 7 flags in it's history.
I would take a day on the way up thru St. Augustine and then take the ferry boat to Amelia Island. I don't care for the beach on the Atlantic side it's rougher water and not as blue as the gulf. So you might find playing in the pool to be more fun than lots of time in the ocean. Downtown there are lots of great restaurants. Art Pizza and the seafood place downtown across from the Visitors center is a must do when we go.

Love growing up and living here on Amelia Island!! Other than the beach (which is nice), there is Fort Clich which you can tour, a small History musuem downtown in the old jail thats worth it. You can also take a River Cruise around the Island that gives some history of the Island as well as Cumberland Island. You can take a ferry from Kingsland, Georida (only about 30 minutes away) to Cumberland Island. Makes a nice day trip. LOTS of history on Cumberland Island. My daughter loves the wild horses that roam the area.

Downtown Fernandina Beach Centre Street (on Amelia Island) is nice. Lots of shops and restaurants. You can walk down and to the docks where the shrimp boats are. We are pretty close to Jacksonville also.

Thank you all! Onlooking at the weekend forecast, which, ironically, now looks like a soaking fromTropical Storm Erin, which is my name, the question becomes what is there to do on Amelia Island, inside???
