What is the most efficient and easiest way to clean toilets?

Oy! The bane of my existence around here, as we have 3 of them...

I have allergies and sensitivities, so can't use chemicals. The only chemicals we have are for toilet, so that is hubby's job. He doesn't really do it well, so I have to take over. Also, he has health issues (just diagnosed with Crohn's), and can't do it right now.

What in the world does everyone do to clean toilets? Does anyone have a more natural way, that isn't going to give me an asthma attack?

Here is what I have tried:

- denture tablets (didn't work)

- vinegar (didn't work)

I can't use bleach of course, and I hate the toilet brushes, as I think they are disgusting. Been using the scrubber thing where you pop on the blue brush with chemicals in it, and then clean bowl, and toss the blue sponge in the trash. It works ok, but looking to see if there is something better.

I need help! When I google it, I get this convoluted ways that I just don't have time for. As a teacher and busy mom, I need something that works fast and won't kill me.

Help! Tiger

Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Mix 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar, pour into basin and let it set for a few minutes. Scrub with brush and rinse.

Clean it more often. It's overall much less work and you'll need far less chemical help.

And get over your hate of brushes.

I swear I read somewhere that you can use a can of Coke. :confused3

(Bolded) is what I do. Actually, bolded is what my 11 year old does. Its one of his chores... he has to clean out the inside of the toilets once a week and use one of those cholorex wipes every few days for the outside. Its amazing how quickly boys learn to aim when they are the ones doing the cleaning up of it! I also think it's funny to hear my 11 year old fuss at his 8 year old brother about making sure he makes it IN the toilet.

Our preferred method involves a trip to Lowe's, a delivery truck, and a plumber. Works every time.

Thanks all.

Ummm...we clean 1x per week, so that is often enough. They never look dirty, nor have rings either.

Kids are too young, so I need to do it.

Hate brushes as they are disgusting, and I spend more time disinfecting the brush, then actually cleaning the toilet.

As I said, I have chemical allergies and breathing issues, so I can't use harsh chemicals, so I appreciate the ideas.

Thanks for the tips, Tiger

I recently read to cut a piece of the Mr. Clean eraser off and leave it in the toilet overnight to remove rings. I'm sure you will still have to scrub other stains off the rim, etc but it's worth a try. I was going to try that this weekend.

The hardware store carries something called plumbers sandpaper. It's basically water proof sand paper. We have hard water and where the water enters the bowl, the minerals build up and it looks terrible, even though we clean weekly. The plumbers sandpaper takes it right off with no chemicals. We also use the tank tablets. Between the two, I don't have to use lots of other chemicals.

Line it with garbage bags
saves water too

I use the scrubbing bubbles flushable cleaners. Super simple. And no brush to disinfect.

I tried this, works great.

OP, if you don't have rings and they aren't looking dirty, just plain old soap should clean them. Squirt some Dawn dish detergent in there and wipe clean.

Personally we use the drop in bleach tablets that you put in the tank but since you can't do bleach, that won't work for you.

What are you trying to clean that nothing else has worked??

How old are your kids--mine started cleaning toilets around age 5 when they couldn't keep their pee INSIDE the toilet...

Sounds neat. I'm not sure if we have that here yet - I'm going to look into that product. Thanks!

Do the bleach tablets smell? What brand?

It's not that nothing has worked, it's just that it is time consuming, or uses harsh chemicals. I'm looking for something that you can drop in, and it does the trick, without using harsh chemicals or brushes.

My youngest just turned 4, and my oldest is 8, but I don't want her doing it, as I would rather do it.

Thanks, Tiger

I haven't read through all of the responses so I am just going to tell you what I think. The easiest and most efficient way to clean toilets is to HAVE SOMEONE ELSE DO IT!!

Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Mix 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar, pour into basin and let it set for a few minutes. Scrub with brush and rinse.

When you mix baking soda and vinegar you get quite a bit of foaming. That's what we used to make the kids volcanoes erupt for school.

I guess I am missing something---if your toilets are cleaned weekly and they really aren't all that dirty, some soap on a rag, wipe them off, 2 minutes :confused3:confused3. Also, if your toilets are basically clean and you are just wiping them down, why not use a brush and what is there really to disinfect? Do you use your toilet brush for anything else but cleaning out the toilet? I'm confused. I have 4 bathrooms and it takes about 30 minutes to clean all 4 of them top to bottom.

Exactly, I'm not sure why this is such a "burdensome, horrible thing" to the OP. A brush removes any physical particles, and a simple cleaning fluid will sterilize, or just use hand wipes.
