is there some special significance of wearing a necklace of can tabs? I thought I remembered can tabs meaning something, but can't recall.

When I was in HS, they were called "Free *bleep* Tags" and guys wore them on necklaces. One tab for every girl they'd slept with...and if a guy gave a girl a tab, she was expected to sleep with him.:sad2:

beautiful. :crazy2:

I knew I remembered something. Been googling, but can't find it. My niece is wearing a necklace FULL of them, and more are on there every time I see her. We have some valid concerns about her, this past year, so I am trying to be vigilant.

When I was in middle school, there were different meanings depending on how you removed the tab- if you bent it back and forth until the ring broke it was one thing, if you got the ring off along with the tab it was another, and if you got the little circle inside the ring that was yet another thing. All different sexual acts.

I was far too naive I think.

This explains the one time that a friend jokingly handed me one. Remind me to punch him in the arm.

This is how it was when I was in middle school as well.

I never heard of this, but having a 13 year old daughter, I'm trying to keep track of all these things I read, so I'm not caught looking like a naive idiot if I see stuff like this. Thanks for the heads up on this trend.

never heard of the tabs, just the jelly bracelets

My DDs school actually did a healthy eating program that used the jelly bracelets. They were each given 5 that signified their daily servings of fruits and vegetables. They started out with them on their left arm and moved them to their right for each serving they ate that day. The goal would be to move all 5 bracelets for a healthy diet. Of course this was right when I saw comments about the jelly bracelets in the news and on tv shows (I specifically recall and episode of Law & Order).

The first thing I thought when they came home was, "Did her teachers miss the news that they are supposed to signify sex acts?" The kids were much too young and I don't think the trend ever happened here, but it was a little odd. It did get the kids excited about eating their vegetables though.

We had the tabs, the jelly bracelets and some clothing brand..had something to do with the number 47 (it was all over the clothes). The tabs had one meaning, the jelly bracelets were for different sexual acts if you managed to break one off and the shirts were for condoms..I think. Or at least that's what I remember beiing told when I asked.

I know! I think about the fact that we were 11 when we were talking about these things and now I'm just like "ick!"

Then again I'm sure quite a few kids exchanging tabs weren't actually doing the acts associated, but just trying to fit in.

Ack!!! I just noticed dd's best friend wearing tabs on her necklace the other day:scared:

I knew it as it being connected to whom you liked. Like if it took until the letter "H" for Harry you would wear it on your shoe because it meant Harry was your True Luv. Or something. :confused3 :confused3

We would do that twisting the stems off of apples (or any fruit with a stem still attached)..you would twist it and say the alphabet until it came off and whatever letter it came off on, then a guy/girl with that letter as their first initial would be your twu wuv...:rotfl2:

This made me physically ill, my dd is 11 :crazy2:

When I was in H.S the can tabs represented a ticket (for lack of a better word) for having sex.

According to snopes, the pull tabs "thing" has been around for 30 years! WOW!!!

I'm 46 and I have never heard of this. The fact that middle school kids are doing these things is really sad. Kids grow up WAY too quickly and are exposed to inappropriate things on TV and on movies when they are way too young IMO.
