Just a concerned Mom here, and yes, I have made an appointment with an opthamologist, but I was wondering if 20/50 is just mildly bad or moderately bad, or what. Last vision check was normal but I suspected his eyesight was getting bad lately and the peditrician confirmed it.

It's mildly bad. It's about what my eyesight is and while I wear glasses all day, I only really need them for driving and reading. Technically, I can squint a little and see a decent distance. :)

It's not terrible but it's not good.
To put it in perspective the worst you can have for driving without glasses in NH is 20/40.

My best eye is 20/70 WITH glasses and I have a daylight only driver's license in PA. I function just fine for the most part. 20/50 sounds pretty good to me - I would be allowed to drive at night with no restrictions in PA.

Sounds pretty good to me. DH is 20/??? (800?) Has a -8 and -9 precription for contacts!, I am about 20/200 or worse (wear contacts) and DD at 9 is already 20/100. I have been required to wear corrective lenses for driving since the day I got my permit.

20/50 means he can see at 20 feet what a normal eye can see at 50 feet.

I found this site... it's pretty cool and according to this site I'm 20/600 which I probably am since I wear -5.50 left, -5.75 right, 1.50 astigmatism in both eyes, and +1.25 both eyes. Talk about being blind.
