Hello everyone!
Planning big trip for early December. In last step of booking and came across option to add Travel Insurance for $190.
I did a little research on the side and have decided that i definitely want to add this.
But my question is, do I add it through Disney or use other insurance companies?

In my research i found a few companies and got quotes. Those quotes go from about the same $190-$250.

Is it easier to just go with Disney? Or do i get a lot more protection going with another company? And if so, any recommendations?

Did you purchase (or will you need to purchase flights)? I’m currently looking at travel insurance for a Disney cruise. For cruises, Disney insurance does not include anything relate to flights, unless you purchase that through Disney too.

Also, Disney's insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions because they don't actually purchase the policy on your behalf until after the final payment date. Most insurance companies will only cover PECs if you buy within the first 2 weeks of booking any aspect of your trip. For some people, this is really important, for others not so much.

For me I book elsewhere because I like to have the cost of flights and pre-cruise hotel stay covered as well.

Is this for a cruise? Will you be flying to your embarkation port? Does your health insurance extend coverage to the areas you'll be visiting?

FYI insurance purchased through cruise lines, tour packages etc are generally a fixed price. Third party insurance is generally age based.

Sorry i should have said that. No, not a cruise. Just Disney World. Also, i will be purchasing the flight seperately.

Personally, I would thoroughly check Disney insurance to see if it meets all your needs. If not, try a different provider.

Not sure how often you travel. We purchase annual policies, it's cheaper than covering each trip individually, and for us, the coverage has been more comprehensive between, major medical, trip interruption, etc.

So at least you don’t need to consider medical coverage or flight evacuation off a ship and/or medical transfers to an American hospital.

You might want to see if your cc covers trip cancellation. Our Chase Sapphire card does, but it doesn’t cover the things I just mentioned so I can’t rely on it alone.

You should read the details of each policy yourself so you can compare them. Nobody here can do that for you.

A couple things to keep in mind
-Disney has a hurricane policy allowing refunds and cancellations, you can look it up online
-room only bookings instead of package bookings are very flexible, Disney is even known to allow last minute modifications/cancellations without penalties if it’s room only
-if you’re worried about having cash locked up in Disney tickets, Disney tickets bought at undercover tourist are 95% refundable prior to the use date

I agree. I would also think about how often in the past you had to cancel a vacation. If this is something that rarely happens for your family, then trip insurance might be a waste of money. If there is a hurricane that causes Disney to close they already have policies relating to changing your trip and you don't need trip insurance to cover that situation. Any company selling insurance is running a for profit business and plans to take in more in premiums then they pay out in claims.

Have never bought trip insurance and really don't see it as being of much value. A few years ago we had to cancel a vacation due to storm damage on our home. Called the airline and they were very agreeable to changing our flights even though technically they didn't need to.

Make sure to read the fine print of any policy you want to purchase to see what it does (or doesn't) cover. I think some people assume trip insurance will pay for everything and that may not be the case.

Contact Steve at the Trip Insurance Store. I've been using him for years to purchase travel insurance. If something happens and you need to file a claim he's invaluable in providing assistance. I've found I get much better coverage at a less expensive price, and he services what he sells. We had to cancel a trip and were getting the run around from the insurance company. Steve got involved and the claim was settled in our favor in about a week and we had a check in about 10 days.

I used to think that way too but over the years, I have learned that stuff happens and there are things beyond our control that make us cancel.
Also it depends on what type of vacation it is. Hotels are fairly lenient in bending the rules.
If you cancel a cruise a week before the sail date, you are SOL.

Also, it depends on the cost of the trip and how much one can afford to lose.
If it doesn’t faze you to lose $8-10k on a tour of Europe, then save your money and don’t bother getting insurance. If it took you years to save up for it and would not be able to save that amount again to reschedule it, then spending another $250 to have trip ins is worth it for the peace of mind.

Everyone should weigh the pros and cons themselves and decide what’s important to them.

Yes, I agree with much of that. Depends on the cost of your trip and your likelihood of having an issue. Certainly an overseas trip will cost more than something domestic. With any of those insurance policies, always read the fine print/exclusions so you know exactly what might be covered (or not covered).

Due to my MIL's age and my Dad's health we always purchase travel insurance because if something happened to them we would have to cancel. I purchase third party for better coverage and price. Usually insuremytrip or squaremouth. they make it easy to compare policies.

I was surprised to find that Disney’s travel insurance gave me a better deal for one guest than other offers. Doubt this will be true if more people were in my party though.
In general, I found an average price of $200.00 paid for an adequate amt of coverage but Disney “chintzed” on the medical coverage which didn’t make a difference for me as my home insurance policy gives me adequate coverage as long as my traveling is domestic.

Recently read a good article on travelers insurance that might be of use:
