I feel silly asking about a splinter. This morning I got a plywood splinter under my fingernail. OUCH! How can I help draw it out? Is there something that I can soak it in that my help. I assume the water will make it expand. Strange how much a little splinter can make my finger throb.

THANK YOU

Try putting Elmer's Glue under the nail where the splinter is. When the glue dries, peel it off and it may pull the splinter out with it. It has worked before.

That's a great idea. Thanks. I'll go give it a try. The nail is about as short as it can be so I hope it will still hold some glue.

Did you get the splinter out?

if that doesnt work, then try sweating it out -

put a plastic bag around it, wrap it up with tape/gauze...

then retry the elmers glue trick!

No, it's not out. It's really bothering me.

I'll go try this right now.

So how long am I supposed to keep this bag on? :lmao: It's pretty hard to work up a sweat in my house; it's 62 in here.

I am guessing that you have already tried tweezers...

Oh yes, and a needle. The nail is very short with the splinter under it. I can't get a hold of it. :confused3

Have you tried to cut your fingernail down as low as it will go?

You can pick at it with a needle or something else sharp like an exacto knife. Pick at the top layers of skin to get at the splinter. Then try to poke into the wood and pull it out.

If you hold ice on the skin it numbs the area, a little.

Yes I have, but I will try to see if I can get any more after I take this bag off. I don't know how long to leave it on. I look ridiculous.:rotfl:

ha ha. Another common theme I am seeing is to soak it in hot soapy water (I also saw epson salt) for a "long long" time. I guess this helps soften everything up and is supposed to make is so you can massage the nail under it to help push it up some.

You guys are so kind to try to help me. :) I am right handed and the splinter is in my right middle finger. I'm not very good at using my left hand, but I'm trying.

I did soak it some, but not nearly what I would consider a long time. I thought of epson salt, but I don't have any. I should have went to Rite Aid. I don't like driving on slick roads though. I see a long soaking in my future.

We already had an ice fishing party planned for today so I won't be able to try the soaking till much later. If it becomes too bothersome while on the ice, I will just stick my finger in one of the fishing holes. I'm sure the lake water will numb it quickly. :rotfl2: I wish the throbbing would stop.

I would call the ER at your local hospital and see if they have any suggestions, without you having to go in. They might have some ideas for you. :thumbsup2

Good luck! Ouch!
