Tipping - deliveries & home improvements - how much do you tip?

I have some questions about tipping. Tomorrow, we are having a new dishwasher delivered. How much do we tip the delivery men? Also, next week we are having granite countertops installed - what is the tipping procedure for this? Do you tip countertop installers? I've always hated this stuff! I don't mind tipping - I just don't know who or how much

I tip everyone a few $$

well except the people at Dunkin Donuts.
I mean come on a tip for pouring a cup a coffee :confused3

I may be the exception but I don't tip installation people. We just had a new microwave installed and we probably could have done it ourselves but DH is not the handyman type and I didn't feel like dealing with it. Anyway we paid $100 to have it installed-- took less than 20 minutes. That was their job.

By boss doesn't give me a tip just a paycheck for doing my job everyday.

I may get flamed but sometimes the whole tipping thing is a little crazy. I tip well at restaurants etc where someone has to go above and beyond.

The can is opened and the worms are now starting to slither out.....

You should tip them? The last time we had something home improvement wise delivered we had to pay a delivery fee. I'm pretty sure these guys don't live on tips like a waiter.

true...but the delivery guys I knew when I worked in retail made about $7 an hour plus tips. That was less than $300 a week. And they made another $200 or so a week in tips.

The company keeps the delivery fee, not the drivers.

That doesn't mean you HAVE TO tip, but I know they appreciate it.

I think $100, or the $75 I paid for my dishwasher installation last month should cover it.

It took under 30 minutes, and the installer was working solo. Hey, I even had to hold the door open for him, and clean (yuck) after he removed the old one.

I did let him use the facilites, phone, etc., and offered a soft drink.

And this guy was an independent contractor, not an employee of the store we bought it from. I don't think he is being paid hourly.

We usually tip $20. I paid $160 to have my microwave installed, but I didn't tip him since he was an independent businessman.

I am with you... I don't tip installations and normally don't tip delivery guys. Sorry! But the last delivery guys tracked MUD all over my house. Their employer had to pay for carpet cleaning and for that I should tip?

Again this is just my opinion but at a restaurant it is up to me to tip for good service. In Europe the tip is included with the bill so you normally don't tip extra. If I have to pay a delivery and/or installation fee I am paying for that service. If the person went above and beyond their normal job I would probably tip them. It usually ends up being more work for me when something is delivered because they NEVER clean up after themselves because they are just there to deliver and install the product. I was told this by a delivery person when I said asked if they were going to clean up the mud they tracked into my house.

From previous tipping threads, I've decided to call the DIS "The Land of the Big Tippers". :teeth:

I actually had 2 delivery guys refuse a gratuity :confused3

They delivered a king size mattress and the box springs and removed my old full size matress/box spring.

It was a scorching July afternoon and they had to haul them up the stairs and worked really, really hard, they were soaked with sweat.

All they would except was 2 cans of Pepsi.

I didn't expect to tip the guys, but after seeing how hard they worked, I wanted to.

This has potential for a scene on Desperate Housewives. :teeth:

I found a website that lists almost every type of tip you can imagine. It says deliveries of appliances should be $5-$10 per person ($20 per person for a LARGE delivery)

http://www.findalink.net/tippingetiquette.php

Wow, according to that site, people tip for everything. They even have a section for funerals. The also say you should tip teachers $25-100 at Christmas. Am I the only one who has never heard of this?

I tip at restaurants, I tip if we get delievery food and I may throw my extra change in the jar at the coffee shop or something.... I tipped our movers.

I don't think I tip anyone else...
