I would love to try and cook Tilapia, but I have no idea how. I've looked at recipes online, but not sure which ones would taste good. What is your favorite way to prepare it?

Mmmmm .... I was wondering what I was going to have for dinner and now I know! I think you can make just about whatever you want with it using a recipe for a firm white fish. For instance, I have made fish tacos with tilapia.

I picked up some fresh sorrel (a lemony herb) at the farmer's market last week. I think I'm going to try tilapia with sorrel and a warm couscous salad.

Just get a pan w/ lid or you can use foil to cover a baking pan. Put fish in pan with buter and old bay and cook on 350 for about 30mins. Its so easy and very good.

I keep it simple. Brush with olive oil, squirt with lemon juice, sprinkle Old Bay. Maybe some parmesean or bread crumbs if I'm feeling fancy. Bake at 375 until it flakes apart. I have no idea how long this is, I'm just good at guessing because I make tilapia ALL the time. 20 min I think.

You can also throw it on a fry pan. It is so easy to make!

I like to douse it in terriyaki sauce and cook it on the grill.

One of my favorite fish!

Mix a cup or two of flour with 1/2-1/2 cup of corn meal. Add in a teaspoon of salt, a few shakes of paprika and a palm full of dried dill weed.

Dip the fish in any wet product you want to use (I use a cup of milk + 1 egg scrambled together) and then into the dry mixture. Fry in a hot pan until the fish is flakey.

Very easy recipe and if you make too much ;) the fish is just as delicious cold!

Anybody here tried grilling tilapia?

** Sorry disykat, I see we posted about the same time

What's in a couscous salad if you don't mind me asking?

Tilapia seems a bit light and flaky for grilling????

I do a great blackened tilapia:
Salt
Garlic powder
Tony Chachere's - the Herbs and Spice, not original (hard to find now???)
Season dry fish well on top side, blacken for a few minutes on med-high heat with very little oil...
Turn off heat when you turn the fish, add a little water to continue cooking to keep fish juicy and flaky.

I serve with a confetti rice pilaf - Rice with sauted onion, green pepper, red pepper, salt and a bit of garlic. (use plenty of oil and salt, as this flavors the whole pot of well drained rice)

Drizzle with a white sauce -
cup of milk, corn starch, slice of american cheese, salt, parsley flakes.

Very labor intensive - but if one wants to put the effort in to cooking something like this, it is delish!

Sometimes I get fancy and top with sauted shrimp.

You can steam some brocolli, or any simple veggie for another side.

I was just going to throw it together like a tabouli salad. Start out with cooked couscous and then add a bit of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, parsley, green peppers, cucumbers and green onions. Maybe toss in a tomato too, I would probably not take the time to chill it so it would be "warm" :). I'm doing weight watchers and couscous is a really good substitute for rice and other than the olive oil all I have to "count" is the couscous.

FWIW, I don't know if tilapia grills well. IIRC it flakes pretty easily and I could see it break up when I tried to flip it. If I did do it on the grill, I would have to do it on a special rack I have for fish and veggies.

I put either lemon pepper or jerk seasoning and quickly pan fry. Fish monger says it easily takes on flavors you put it with.

I'm starting to do WW again and this is a good option for dinner and its something that everyone would like, thanks for the idea.

I agree with doing it on the grill, you definitely would need a grill pan for it.

I made fish tacos lastnight with tilipia.

I used half a packet of grill mates lime mojito seasoning packet mixes with the oil and vinegar and water from the back of the packet. I let the fish marinade about 20 minutes.

In the meantime I get my coleslaw ready using a bagged coleslaw and quarter cup of coleslaw dressing or make my own dressing.

I bake the fish for 20-30 minutes. Serve on warm tortillas, top with the coleslaw and a dash of hot sauce and I serve cold pineapple on the side.

I also bake tilipia in seasoned breadcrumbs and either serve with veggies or on a bun with sweet potato fries.

You can also take the fish and put it in a foil wrapper with some lemon, butter, seasoning and some sliced veggies.

I make Broiled Talapia Parmesan. It's wonderful!

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/broiled-tilapia-parmesan/detail.aspx

1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup butter, softened
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon celery salt
2 pounds tilapia fillets

Directions
Preheat your oven's broiler. Grease a broiling pan or line pan with aluminum foil.
In a small bowl, mix together the Parmesan cheese, butter, mayonnaise and lemon juice. Season with dried basil, pepper, onion powder and celery salt. Mix well and set aside.
Arrange fillets in a single layer on the prepared pan. Broil a few inches from the heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the fillets over and broil for a couple more minutes. Remove the fillets from the oven and cover them with the Parmesan cheese mixture on the top side. Broil for 2 more minutes or until the topping is browned and fish flakes easily with a fork. Be careful not to over cook the fish.

re: grilling - yes, you certainly need a grill pan. If you haven't invested in one - you need to! I have several different kinds and use them all the time. My favorite (and what I've most recently used for the fish) is actually a grill basket. Mine came with a lid that was frying pan shaped as well as a deeper basket. Almost every time I have the grill on I throw some veggies in the basket to grill beside the meat. I also do shrimp and what I call "lazy bobs" (k-bobs with no skeweres) in it.

Tilapia does not turn over easily, so the fillets may not be perfectly in shape if you do so - but we love it anyway. I always prefer doing fish on the grill, even if it's just wrapped in foil, so it doesn't stink up the house.

I take bread crumbs, parm cheese, italian seasons and salt and pepper in put in a big ziplock type bag. Put the fish in it ( no egg, sometimes dip the fish in water) and shake and bake it.

For chile lime butter
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot
1 teaspoon finely grated fresh lime zest
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon minced fresh Thai or serrano chile (preferably red), including seeds
1/2 teaspoon salt

For fish
6 (5- to 6-oz) pieces skinless tilapia fillet or farm-raised striped bass fillets with skin
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
print a shopping list for this recipe

preparation

Make chile lime butter:
Stir together butter, shallot, zest, lime juice, chile, and salt in a bowl.
Prepare fish:
If using striped bass, score skin in 3 or 4 places with a thin sharp knife to prevent fish from curling (do not cut through flesh). Pat fish dry and sprinkle with salt. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until just smoking, then sauté 3 pieces of fish, turning over once with a spatula, until golden and just cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes, and transfer to a plate. Sauté remaining fish in remaining tablespoon oil in same manner.
Serve each piece of fish with a dollop of chile lime butter.

I like to dip the fish in a bit of milk, coat with cracker crumbs, put in the pan, spritz w/ a bit of olive oil and bake.

We have used whole wheat ritz crackers and (sorry, this cracks me up!) GOLDFISH. The parmesan flavored goldfish were excellent!

I got this recipe from here. It's SUPER good. (But I don't use the onion powder or celery salt.)

Tilapia is one of the only proteins that are safe in my house so I make it all the time (food allergic kid)...anyway, I make a MEAN fried tilapia.

I use three shallow dishes. Into the first dish I put flour with seasoning (I use a lemon pepper sea salt). Second bowl gets soy milk (we can't have regular milk or eggs, but you could use those if you prefer). Third bowl gets panko bread crumbs...they have to be panko, not regular bread crumbs.

Coat fish in flower, dip in milk, coat in bread crumbs, saute' in olive oil...it will get super duper crispy and is filled with goodness. I eat mine with lemon juice on top...hubby uses malt vinegar and kiddos use ketchup. We all love it.
