The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: I have not used it yet but I am planning to for spring. I've input my races into my calendar so it should create a plan based on those. I'm able to see the next week if workouts but I understand those may change based on my runs and recovery.

Today it is suggesting a 31 minute base run that I'm ignoring because I'm still in marathon recovery. It is the first time since Sunday that it hasn't told me to rest.

When I'm actively following a plan, I ignore the suggestions. I'm very curious how it will work, so that is the main reason for my experiment this spring.

ATTQOTD: um, it might? If I ever updated the app, connected my watch to the app, or saved a workout lol! I truly only use my Garmin as a backup to a different phone app for tracking distance during a run and for checking HR in summer to remind myself that “it’s the heat, stupid.” I discard every run when I’m done, so I guess it really doesn’t know anything about me.

My personal rating of winter road surfaces, based on my run this morning....

Bare road>untrodden snow (<3") >smooth packed snow>slush>"brown sugar" snow (i.e. granular, broken snow pack)>ice>black ice

Also, my Gatorade turned into a slushie.
I really like our packed snow more than fresh, but it also gets groomed, so it’s pretty smooth, for running, for snowboarding freshies rule

ATTQOTD:
I do remember hearing about the idea of taking a day off for each mile run in a race. But I think the critical piece is around the effort of the race and then taking time based on that. I just got through Dopey with a quad strain that hurt like crazy at times, so I am going to take two weeks off from running, but will keep walking and strength training. Next up for me is Spring Surprise so I feel that the time off will be really helpful and then ease into a short training plan for SS.

ATTQOTD: I tried Garmin daily suggested workouts last year and really loved it. It helped me tackle speed work and I started to enjoy it rather than being scared of it. I found it easy to follow. I will be using it again for a spring race.

I won’t use it for races over a HM, from what I’ve read they not very useful for marathon training.

ATTQOTD: I leave the Garmin suggestions on for curiosity to see what it suggests, but I have my own plan that I follow. Interestingly, they are often generally similar.

My Garmin really wants me to do my long runs on Saturday despite the fact that my history has them all being on Sundays. Someone said that I might be able to tell Garmin to do Sundays, but I couldn't find this.

Similarly, as someone else said, I can't see the workouts ahead of time, and there's enough variety in them (both length of time and effort) that I would want to be able to plan ahead. Again, maybe there's a way to view them ahead of time that I haven't found - I haven't looked for this.

Glad to hear it has some use and based on what it has been telling me for my upcoming half, I would not be on board with its suggestions.

So depending on your watch the way it work may be a little different but heres how mine works. From your watches home screen select "run", when todays suggestion pops up press the start button which will open 3 options, select "settings". From there you can tell it which days you can run with "Training Days" and then the next option below is "Long Workout Day" and you can make you selection from there.

To see the next few days of suggestions follow the same earlier steps, but instead of selecting "settings" pick the one above it called "More Suggestions" and then scroll down to see you options.

I watched a 50 minute video when I got my new watch on its features and this was one of the things it covered lol. Would have take me a while to figure it out on my own.

QOTD: Do you rather run alone or with one or more person... or with your pet?

ATTQOTD: I run almost every run with my dog who loves getting out there in the mornings! I like those runs just the dog and I. Its a great way to start the day and get together a plan or to work out any problems I may have to deal with that day. For weekend long runs, I would prefer a group run. Those 2+ hour runs are boring alone and have someone else going through it with you seems to make the miles go by faster.

Hope everyone has recovered from the WDW marathon weekend and has a great weekend!

I run alone because I don't know anyone in the area that runs, and I don't have enough time to drive anywhere for group runs. Plus, I would be way too self-conscious of my pace on group runs.

I would like to run with my dog, but she's too crazy, so walks are all she gets.

I like running races with other people, but only if paces match or we're just running for fun.

ATTQOTD: I prefer to do my shorter runs alone because they’re usually intervals that don’t necessarily line up with anyone else. Long runs are definitely more enjoyable in a group. Chatting about everything and nothing makes the miles go by much faster.

ATTQOTD:
In the summer I take my dog about 50% of the time. I like to run in the afternoon (it just seems to work out better with how our day flows) and sometimes it's too hot for him, or I'll run him a few miles and then drop him off at the house and finish on my own. Otherwise it's just me. My kids are way faster than I am, and DH isn't really interested in putting in regular mileage at this point. In the winter it's treadmill or cross-training only.
