I'm going to ask that all discussion of this resort be kept to a minimum. I would like to keep this thread for going haywire and let it focus on questions people have about the resort and posting new information. If there is a website with AKL photographs, perhaps we could all store our pictures there and I will provide a link in the thread. Or you could provide a link in your post and I will add it the the original thread under a Photo's heading. I would just like to keep this thread from making me and anyone else search thru 600 plus pages of talk and photos.

What type of amenities are offered?
The Animal Kingdom Lodge features Uzima, our feature zero-depth entry pool. Uzima means "clear water," and there's plenty of it to enjoy, along with a 67-foot-long water slide. Younger Guests will have fun in the wading pool, and our two spas offer aqua-therapy for all ages.
The water in Uzima pool is crystal clear, however it is designed to look like a watering hole. The bottom of the pool is not painted bright blue, but a rather "murky" blue to make it look more realistic as a watering hole. It is not dirty as it looks to be.
Nearby the pool is the Hakuna Matata Playground and you can enjoy a refreshing drink at the Uzima Springs pool bar.
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Animal Programs:
Join us for viewings and activities honoring the creatures of the savanna. Go on a cultural safari, watch animals at play at dusk with night vision, try your hand as a junior researcher, or watch animal handlers feed the pelicans and flamingos.

There are three primary restaurants at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and a relaxing lounge.
"Jiko, 'The Cooking Place" is the lodge's upscale dining destination. The menu emphasizes fresh cuisine, and there's an extensive collection of South African wines offered. The decor reflects the best of Africa's heritage. Prepare for a leisurely meal and impeccable service. (Reservations strongly recommended.)
"Boma 'Flavors of Africa" is a buffet with an assortment of regional dishes. This is a different experience from any buffet you've dined at before. Lots of unusual offerings as well as traditional buffet favorites for the kids (or adults with not so adventurous tastes). (Reservations strongly recommended.)
Mara is a fairly basic quick service restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's perfect when you want a quick, casual meal.
The Victoria Falls Lounge is one of the most intimate you'll find at any Disney resort. It opens at 4:00pm and features specialty coffees and teas in addition to being a full service bar.
For kids, there's the Pumbaa's Fun and Games Arcade and for adults wanting some time for themselves, Simba's Clubhouse childcare center caters to kids ages 4-12.

Can you tell me what goes on during the tour? Like, how long is it, what do we see (animals or is it a hotel tour) does it include the meal in Jiko?
The Sunset or Wanyama Safari is exclusively offered to Animal Kingdom Lodge Concierge Guests. It is approximately 1 1/2 hours long and takes place on the savannas of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is meant to be a re-creation of a true African afternoon game drive and is an opportunity to spend time with members from the animal programs team learning about the natural history and management of the animal collection at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. Photo opportunities of the animals and architecture of Animal Kingdom Lodge that can only be experienced from our savannas. Your safari will conclude with a true African dining experience at Jiko, just like the lodges in Africa where a multi-course meal will await you.
What about Laundry facilities?
The laundry room is located on the first floor near Simba's Cubhouse. Washers and Dryers are $2.00 each. Soap is available for $1.00. There is a sitting room with TV for those choosing to wait for their clothes to finish.
Zahanati Fitness Center is located near the pool. It is open from 6AM - 9PM and has a full line of Cybex equipment.

Room Questions
Are "Pool View" rooms noisy?
On the lower floors...a bit. If you leave your slider open, or are out on the balcony. With the doors closed, you might get a hint of noise during the afternoon wafting up from the pool, but it's not distracting, IMHO. At night...I've never, ever heard a thing.
What section should I request??
List the most important thing (and I have a feeling that might be a "king" bed!) first; then if there's something else you want (specific floor, trail, etc.), list it 2nd. I wouldn't recommend making any more than 2 requests. In slower times you are more likely to be upgraded (really just depends on how full the resort is during your stay). When you check in, they'll show you on the resort map the area where your room is located. If it doesn't look like what you were hoping for, you can certainly ask if any upgrades are available.
We have booked a savanna bunk bed room and are wondering where in the resort are they located? Are they scattered all around, or are they mostly in one area?
They are scattered around the resort.
I saw pictures of a queen bed, bunk beds and the day bed made up. What type of room was that?
That was a deluxe room on the 5th or 6th floor. These rooms have been converted to AKV.
We want to know what should we request for a standard room, what are the chances for an upgrade to savannah view, will making a request hurt our chances for an upgrade, how do you ask for an upgrade?
But, as far as upgrades, I don't think putting a request on your room will hinder your chances. I think AKL upgrades whenever they can, if it's a busy week, you are less likely to get an upgrade. If you ask for an upgrade upon check-in they will tell you the price difference between the rooms-from what I know, those that have been upgraded for free either find out at the front desk when the CM tells them, or when they get to their room.
I was wondering how the room sizes at AKL compare to the ones at the value resorts?

We are staying in the Villas. Where should I request?
Most suggestions are pretty much always the same; for Savannah view. Zebra trail, near the elevators down to the pool area. That puts you at about the mid point of Zebra trail (not too far from the lobby) with easy access via elevator to the pool, Mara, Boma, Jiko's, the fitness center, etc. It just seems to be the most "centrally located" area with access to most of the resorts amenities.
It'll also keep you away from the construction site lines for Kidani Village, which will be across the sunset savannah. They wouldn't bother ME, but for some people they ruin the view.
How do you request a room in a certain location?
You want to ask them to note it in your reservation when you make it or you can call them back and ask them to add it. The resort will have your information at about 8 days out. In that time you can call the resort direct to request it or fax it to them including your name and reservation number. but please remember that no matter how you do it, it is just a request and never guaranteed.
Thinking of moving to AK the last 3 nights but only standards available. What is the view...parking lot? Is it worth it without the views?
Standard view does face the parking lot sometimes. It is very worth it since there are many people pens to view the animals and just walking down the hallway, you will have views to the savannah. The standard rooms are on floors 1-4 and are 344 square feet. allears.net has some pictures of views from standard view rooms. Not all are parking lot view, some look out over Boma's roof and even some "bad" savannah views are classified standard view.
Is Savannah View with Bunk Beds an option?
There ARE Savannah view Bunk bed rooms.
We have a savannah view, bunk bed booked, and I called the Disney reservation number to request the Zebra Trail, Arusha Savannah. Should I call right to AK and make the request as well? I know it is just a request and its not guaranteed, but I want the best view possible.
If you have your request noted on your reservation, the hotel should get it automatically. Disney reservations turns over your reservation to the hotel a few days before your arrival (I think five days before). Until then AKL will know nothing of you yet. If you want to be certain, give them a call a few days before you arrive and say that you want to make sure that your room request was noted with your reservation.
If the doors are wood, does anyone have suggestions about putting up lime green Mickey heads & other such decorations on our AKL door? And is it even allowed by the resort?
I just used plain old scotch tape and they stayed on fine. Since AKV has a raised wood shield on the wood door, you need a smaller size picture to make it stay flat. I used a 12 x 12" piece of paper plus had Mickey, Minnie and MH hanging off of that, and it was perfect for BCV but too large for AKV.
I got the pool view room because my son (15) wants to be closed to the action, lol. Can somebody tell me whether or not you need to pass the lobby area to get to the pools? Is there a better pool view room preference?
...if you get a room in the Giraffe Trail, there is also an elevator (which we used OFTEN!) about halfway down the corridor, that goes directly to the first floor..it lets you out near the small bridge that is at the front edge of the pool (opposite the pool bar)....
I need some info. on the queen bunk bed room. My 2 sons ages 19 & 15 will be in our room this year, they are both 6 feet tall. Question, will either of them fit in the bunk beds or should I get the room with 2 queen beds?
They MIGHT be able to squeeze into the bunk beds, but they're not going to be, IMHO, very comfortable. Original OP was 6ft 3-ish. While they could lay on the bunk beds, they had to curl up their legs a bit because the footboard on the bunks were just a bit too "short". I'd suspect they're going to run into the same problem. And you can't (especially on the top bunk) really do "kitty corner" to stretch your legs out. They mention wouldn't have wanted to sleep in them long term.

Is there a specific savannah view area that I should request to be placed in? Maybe one area has more animals in it than another. If so, when should I call with the request.
Each person has their own favorite savannah, therefore it would be impossible to tell you which one is THE best. The number of animals will always depend on the time of day. You should fax your request to the above number or call the resort directly within 2 weeks of your arrival. Please remember that requests are just that, they are not guarantees.
Are connecting rooms only available in the Savannah room category, or are there some in the standard and pool view rooms as well?
I think there are some in all categories. Based on replies from posters who have used this option.
Are there connecting rooms available, and what would be the best way to secure them?
There are connecting rooms available. You can request them when making your reservation, and if you're traveling with younger kids, you'll likely get them. HOWEVER, the one thing you should be aware of is that, like all other Disney resorts, connecting rooms are considered a request. They'll do everything they can to satisfy that request....but sometimes they do fail. You could also choose to book a 2BR DVC room through CRO....they sleep 9 AND you get a full kitchen. The rate for a Savannah view 2BR DVC room is ABOUT $100 more per night, during value season, than 2 Savannah view AKL rooms would be (680 per night vs 580 per night)...not TOO much more.
Can I book a Deluxe Room as I have in the past?
No, I'm sorry. The Deluxe rooms are no more. Those rooms are the rooms that have been converted to DVC rooms.
Can you smell the animals from your room or the property?
No, nobody has ever complained about the smell of the animals. It is Disney Magic!
A post on the restaurant thread that said you can order room service delivered from Jiko -- has anyone tried this, and was the quality of the food just as good? Also, the rooms look a little on the small side...is there a comfortable place for 4 to dine in the room or on the balcony?
The quality of the food is the same in room service or going to the restaurant. I wouldn't there is a comfortable space for 4 to dine but there is enough room in the room for it.
Is there a better pool view room preference?
Pool view rooms are located in either Giraffe or Zebra Trail. Giraffe Trail has the advantage of not being very long, so you are never far away from the lobby. Also there is a direct access to the walkway to the busses. Zebra Trail has the pool on one side and Arusha Savannah on the other side. So when you walk down the hallway to your room you will pass windows from where you can see the Savannah. It might give you more of a feel of being surrounded by magic. Also there is a laundry room on Zebra Trail and Mara might be slightly closer, but it is not far from the Giraffe Trail rooms either.

Both Giraffe and Zebra Trail have elevators in the middle of the trail which can take you down to the first floor for direct access to the pool without having to pass the lobby.
We have booked a standard room for May. I have read that there are some standard rooms that are better then others. Can anyone tell me which ones these are so I can request them. Thanks.
regarding standard view rooms: most look out over the front of the resort, but some are very bad savanna views or pool views. So these "better" standard views are scattered around the resort, so you can't just ask for a certain location. I think the best would be to request a non-parking-lot-view. However, chances are not too great as most standard view rooms really are parking lot view.
What shampoo/conditioner products are supplied in the rooms at the AKL? I have sensitive skin but when we stayed at the Grand Californian at Disneyland last summer we had H2o products which I was OK with. Do they have these products at the AKL or the Mickey shaped bottle ones

No, they are wooden. Scotch tape works wonderful on them.
Transportation Questions
How easy or difficult is it to get to ADRs from AKL? I know some people complain about the distance to the other parks, etc. Do you rent a car or just schedule bussing into the schedule?
Getting to ADR's at the parks is a snap...transport is VERY efficient at AKL since you don't share the busses with any other resorts. Getting to ADR's at other resorts is not so efficient. But that's true for most resorts. You have to take a bus to the nearest park or to DTD, and then hop onto another bus to the "ADR" resort.
I was wondering about a certain aspect of the lodge-the bus stop, not so much the transportation itself, but the configuration of the stop. Is it a covered walkway all the way down to the buses? How far is from the entrance to the lobby? Are their separate "bays" for each park?
It is covered at the end but I vaguely remember being uncovered for the walk down. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) It is downhill to get there. there are benches to sit on but keep in mind that unless you are in the line when the bus pulls up, you may not make it on the bus in the morning. It is all one big waiting area so If one bus line is too long, you may be able to get on another park bus to go somewhere else. There are no bars or ropes to create a line which can sometimes be very chaotic. (Warning, you have to walk RIGHT THROUGH the smoking area!) The slight incline getting back to your room at night can feel like a million miles.
Can you still exit the resort via Zawadi marketplace when heading to the bus stops, and avoid the "smoking area"?
Yes--you can still do that & avoid the smoke.
How long from time plane lands until we get to AKL if we are taking Magic Express bus ?
It varies, based on both when you visit (as in time of year...the busier it is, the longer it usually takes to check in through the ME counter), what time of day you land (morning tends to be busier than late afternoon), and somewhat luck of the draw (how many hotels are on your bus and which hotels they are). From a single poster, they have gotten here in 45 minutes and have gotten there in 1 hr and 45 minutes.
What time should we be at the bus stop in the am in order to make rope drop at the different parks on non EMH day during a peak attendence week??
I'd be at the bus stop about an hour and a half...maybe a bit more than that.... before the scheduled rope drop. AKL transport is especially efficient and you'll probably make it to the park about 20 to 25 min after you get on the bus, at most (that's MK). The question is "How long will you wait to get on the bus". You MAY get right on, in which case you'll be about an hour early (which is when the entrance plaza's usually open up) for rope drop. But you also may have to wait a bus or two, depending on how busy it is (back to time of year...you say peak, so....). So to ENSURE you're there before rope drop....the above suggestion is what I'd go with.
Restaurant Questions
What are you favorite things to eat at Mara, Boma and Jiko??
At Mara, we love the flatbread chicken pizza, the soups, and Zebra Domes. They used to have a peanut chicken "on a stick" (sauté, maybe) but I'm not sure they have it anymore.
At Boma's, we love the soups, the potatoes with affritude, the prime rib, the BBQ ribs (if you're there on the right night),any of the green salads with the mango vinaigrette dressing and, again, the zebra domes. Keep in mind, that's just a few favorites. The stuff on the buffet is so good it would take me volumes to write about everything we've enjoyed.
At Jiko's, pretty much everything on the menu is a winner, IMHO. We, again, liked the flatbreads, the filet mignon, the tanglewood chicken, and the halibut are all favorites...as is the pistachio crème brulee.
Does Mara also sell the mugs that are the generic resort mugs?
As of January 2009, they still had the generic YOAMD mugs in the Mara.
Does anyone know if there is a little convenience store on site that sells items like milk, bread and cereal now that part of the villas are open?
At Jambo House (the main lodge), Zawadi marketplace is now selling that sort of stuff. They've added a bank of coolers (milk, juice, soda, wine, beer), and some food items (exactly the ones you mention above, along with donuts, chips, etc) quite recently. Keep in mind, you'll be paying "Disney Prices".
I was told that the Zawadi Marketplace shop at the AKL has a nice selection of South African wines (by the bottle) that you can purchase. Hopefully someone can confirm!
They sell wine both at the Mara and in Zawadi marketplace. I think if you go to Victoria Falls, you can pick up a bottle there, too. Bring a corkscrew for your room if that's your intent or have them open it at the bar. I've heard they'll do that. I believe Room service might also deliver, but have not confirmed that.
Do I need to make ADRs for (early) Boma breakfast in Feb??
yes, you need to make ADR's no matter what time you want to eat there. Early or not. ADR's are reccomended for most sit down restaraunts.
Concierge Questions
Is a concierge room (not on the lounge level) worth it?
Just the access to booking the sunrise safari makes it worth it for most people who stay there. It makes breakfast so easy to do and free! Also great snacks throughout the day and we had cans of soda to take back to the room for later.
if you book a standard concierge room will it just be a standard room with access to the concierge lounge?
The rooms ARE specific to concierge.....it's not like you just get any room in the house and, on top of that, they give you access to concierge services and the lounge. The specific block of rooms are dedicated concierge rooms, in a specifc "block" on the 4th floor. But they're set up just like, and are the same size as, a standard AKL room. I think they might have better robes in them (can't remember) and they all get nightly turndown service (unless you request otherwise) but other than that...not much difference.
The real differences are in the services you'll get (as mentioned, turndown...but you also have full access to the IPO staff who, IMHO, are the best IPO/concierge on property), the access to the lounge AND access to the Sunrise Safari (which is almost worth the extra $$ per night by itself, IMHO).
We are staying on club level for the first time ever- the robes in the rooms- are they for keeps or just on loan?
They are on loan. If you really want a robe to take home for a souvenir, they do sell them in the Zawadi Marketplace. The one's in the marketplace have the logo on them but the ones in the room do not.
If you book standard concierge, are you guaranteed a savanna view?
Now that the DVC has taken over a few floors in AKL, all standard concierge rooms are savannah view.
Are standard concierge rooms on a different floor than the lounge? What floor(s) are the rooms on? In practice, does this work OK?
There are some concierge rooms on other floors. It works with no problem so long as you remember your room key each time you go out since you cannot get upstairs in the elevator without it. Yes, on a different floor, but it has always been that way, to a certain extent. Lounge is on 6th floor. In the past Club Level rooms were on 5th & 6th. Now, non-DVC Club Level rooms are on 4th; DVC CL rooms on the 6th floor.
We've been know to eat a big lunch out, and snack for supper. Would the evening offerings do for that on occasion?
I didn't think that the evening offering were enough if you want to eat a lot. It was great for a small meal or snacks and then fill up on desserts.
Are wines available in the evening? Particular hours?
Wines are avaiable in the evening. Hours of each offering are stated above.
If staying at concierge level, can you get ADRs just a few weeks before arrival? There are a couple that I have not been able to book myself, but would concierge be able to do that for us?
You can ask but there are no "magic spaces" being help for concierge guests. I would reccomend faxing or e-mailing concierge staf ASAP so that they can start trying for the ADR's you want.
That being said, I was able to change my Cindy's ADR the day before to a different time. They were great. Magical things can happen but not guaranteed.
When can you expect to be back at AKL from the sunrise safari?
After the sunrise Safari, you will have breakfast in AK and then it will take you as long as it takes you to get out of the park and grab/wait for a bus. Could be 30 minutes could be over an hour.
How is the CL staff?
They are very helpful and accomodating. Be sure to bring the kids when you check in since they may have a little surprise for them and they can snack while you talk to the staff.

Are AKL CL rooms on the Arusha Savannah?
The lounge rooms are all savannah view and are on Arush Savannah.
I understand that the sunrise safari is hosted on Thursday and Sunday mornings. It is only for concierge guest staying at AKL. If I book Saturday night at AKL concierge can I book the sunrise safari for that Sunday am?
OK -I did this last Jan.
We checked in on Wed. morning and enjoyed the AKL and briefly went to a park in the eve.
Next morning before we went to meet Safari group we had the Bell Services come pick up our luggage and advised them that we were moving over to WL. Luggage was taken over there sometime during the day. We enjoyed the day at AK and when we checked in at WL about 5:00pm they brought our luggage up to us.
How hard was it to book the sunrise safari? Did you book it at 180 days out after you made your reservation for AKL conceirge?
I made all my reservations at about the 90 day mark last year.

However, if I remember correctly, the start times of some activities vary with sunset (especially the story telling).
The activities are free, I think for some you have to pay for the materials that are used, like the craft sessions.
What are the chances of getting to do the sunrise safari and not being on the club level?
None ! You can book the Wanyama (Sunset) Safari if you're an AKL guest (non-CL level) for $210/pp, but the Sunrise Safari is open to CL guests only.
what is the "bead activity" and what ages?
The bead activities are for any ages. You stay with your children and they are all different. Once you complete an activity you receive a bead for a necklace, or keychain sort of thing. They give you a string to put a bead on and you get a different bead for each activity. One of them was like a bingo came called Bongo and it had animals on the card instead of numbers.
what time and days does the resort do the story telling around the firepit?
Unless things have changed...every day at "dusk". They put the specific time on the events list and the bulletin board, but it changes with the season.
Can guests just visiting the lodge to eat or look around take part in any of the offerings,like storytime,etc?
I believe anyone that is there can take part in the activities unless it is written for resort guests only. Maybe someone who has done them can help me?

Can someone tell me some of the AKL specific merchandise you can buy in the gift shop?
They did have AKL coffee mugs & I think travel mugs too (in the gift shop, not the refillable kind). Several styles of AKL t-shirts for adults & kids (I got one for me). AKL frame, magnet, small notebook. AKL art prints. Hmmm, what else? Not AKL, but they had South African wines by the bottle at very reasonable prices. & of course the other African stuff like instruments, carvings, etc.
Can anybody tell me what kind of beer and wine selection my in-laws can expect at Zawadi Marketplace? Also, do you have any idea what price range they should expect?

is there a floor that gives the best view of the Savannah as a whole.
We had requested 3rd floor, Zebra Trail, Arusha Savannah, and that's right where they put us. The view was just about perfect, and what made it even better was that we were on the same floor as the lobby ... a 30-second stroll out our door and we were right there.
Does anyone know how people can send us mail/packages while we are at the AKL? We have a very common last name so I do not want the mail or packages to go to the wrong room.
IMPORTANT: From March 2007 - April 2009 Construction will be taking place at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in preparation for the Animal Kingdom Lodge Villas. The early phases include construction in the main building.
In June 2007, some guests have been called and offered to move to Saratoga Springs due to noise concerns. DVC members who have reservered the villas in the main building have been told to expect construction noise during the day and some evening hours.

What type of amenities are offered?
The Animal Kingdom Lodge features Uzima, our feature zero-depth entry pool. Uzima means "clear water," and there's plenty of it to enjoy, along with a 67-foot-long water slide. Younger Guests will have fun in the wading pool, and our two spas offer aqua-therapy for all ages.
The water in Uzima pool is crystal clear, however it is designed to look like a watering hole. The bottom of the pool is not painted bright blue, but a rather "murky" blue to make it look more realistic as a watering hole. It is not dirty as it looks to be.

Room Questions
Are "Pool View" rooms noisy?
On the lower floors...a bit. If you leave your slider open, or are out on the balcony. With the doors closed, you might get a hint of noise during the afternoon wafting up from the pool, but it's not distracting, IMHO. At night...I've never, ever heard a thing.
What section should I request??
List the most important thing (and I have a feeling that might be a "king" bed!) first; then if there's something else you want (specific floor, trail, etc.), list it 2nd. I wouldn't recommend making any more than 2 requests. In slower times you are more likely to be upgraded (really just depends on how full the resort is during your stay). When you check in, they'll show you on the resort map the area where your room is located. If it doesn't look like what you were hoping for, you can certainly ask if any upgrades are available.
We have booked a savanna bunk bed room and are wondering where in the resort are they located? Are they scattered all around, or are they mostly in one area?
They are scattered around the resort.
I saw pictures of a queen bed, bunk beds and the day bed made up. What type of room was that?
That was a deluxe room on the 5th or 6th floor. These rooms have been converted to AKV.
We want to know what should we request for a standard room, what are the chances for an upgrade to savannah view, will making a request hurt our chances for an upgrade, how do you ask for an upgrade?
But, as far as upgrades, I don't think putting a request on your room will hinder your chances. I think AKL upgrades whenever they can, if it's a busy week, you are less likely to get an upgrade. If you ask for an upgrade upon check-in they will tell you the price difference between the rooms-from what I know, those that have been upgraded for free either find out at the front desk when the CM tells them, or when they get to their room.
I was wondering how the room sizes at AKL compare to the ones at the value resorts?

We are staying in the Villas. Where should I request?
Most suggestions are pretty much always the same; for Savannah view. Zebra trail, near the elevators down to the pool area. That puts you at about the mid point of Zebra trail (not too far from the lobby) with easy access via elevator to the pool, Mara, Boma, Jiko's, the fitness center, etc. It just seems to be the most "centrally located" area with access to most of the resorts amenities.
It'll also keep you away from the construction site lines for Kidani Village, which will be across the sunset savannah. They wouldn't bother ME, but for some people they ruin the view.
How do you request a room in a certain location?
You want to ask them to note it in your reservation when you make it or you can call them back and ask them to add it. The resort will have your information at about 8 days out. In that time you can call the resort direct to request it or fax it to them including your name and reservation number. but please remember that no matter how you do it, it is just a request and never guaranteed.
Thinking of moving to AK the last 3 nights but only standards available. What is the view...parking lot? Is it worth it without the views?
Standard view does face the parking lot sometimes. It is very worth it since there are many people pens to view the animals and just walking down the hallway, you will have views to the savannah. The standard rooms are on floors 1-4 and are 344 square feet. allears.net has some pictures of views from standard view rooms. Not all are parking lot view, some look out over Boma's roof and even some "bad" savannah views are classified standard view.
Is Savannah View with Bunk Beds an option?
There ARE Savannah view Bunk bed rooms.
We have a savannah view, bunk bed booked, and I called the Disney reservation number to request the Zebra Trail, Arusha Savannah. Should I call right to AK and make the request as well? I know it is just a request and its not guaranteed, but I want the best view possible.
If you have your request noted on your reservation, the hotel should get it automatically. Disney reservations turns over your reservation to the hotel a few days before your arrival (I think five days before). Until then AKL will know nothing of you yet. If you want to be certain, give them a call a few days before you arrive and say that you want to make sure that your room request was noted with your reservation.
If the doors are wood, does anyone have suggestions about putting up lime green Mickey heads & other such decorations on our AKL door? And is it even allowed by the resort?
I just used plain old scotch tape and they stayed on fine. Since AKV has a raised wood shield on the wood door, you need a smaller size picture to make it stay flat. I used a 12 x 12" piece of paper plus had Mickey, Minnie and MH hanging off of that, and it was perfect for BCV but too large for AKV.
I got the pool view room because my son (15) wants to be closed to the action, lol. Can somebody tell me whether or not you need to pass the lobby area to get to the pools? Is there a better pool view room preference?
...if you get a room in the Giraffe Trail, there is also an elevator (which we used OFTEN!) about halfway down the corridor, that goes directly to the first floor..it lets you out near the small bridge that is at the front edge of the pool (opposite the pool bar)....
I need some info. on the queen bunk bed room. My 2 sons ages 19 & 15 will be in our room this year, they are both 6 feet tall. Question, will either of them fit in the bunk beds or should I get the room with 2 queen beds?
They MIGHT be able to squeeze into the bunk beds, but they're not going to be, IMHO, very comfortable. Original OP was 6ft 3-ish. While they could lay on the bunk beds, they had to curl up their legs a bit because the footboard on the bunks were just a bit too "short". I'd suspect they're going to run into the same problem. And you can't (especially on the top bunk) really do "kitty corner" to stretch your legs out. They mention wouldn't have wanted to sleep in them long term.

Is there a specific savannah view area that I should request to be placed in? Maybe one area has more animals in it than another. If so, when should I call with the request.
Each person has their own favorite savannah, therefore it would be impossible to tell you which one is THE best. The number of animals will always depend on the time of day. You should fax your request to the above number or call the resort directly within 2 weeks of your arrival. Please remember that requests are just that, they are not guarantees.
Are connecting rooms only available in the Savannah room category, or are there some in the standard and pool view rooms as well?
I think there are some in all categories. Based on replies from posters who have used this option.
Are there connecting rooms available, and what would be the best way to secure them?
There are connecting rooms available. You can request them when making your reservation, and if you're traveling with younger kids, you'll likely get them. HOWEVER, the one thing you should be aware of is that, like all other Disney resorts, connecting rooms are considered a request. They'll do everything they can to satisfy that request....but sometimes they do fail. You could also choose to book a 2BR DVC room through CRO....they sleep 9 AND you get a full kitchen. The rate for a Savannah view 2BR DVC room is ABOUT $100 more per night, during value season, than 2 Savannah view AKL rooms would be (680 per night vs 580 per night)...not TOO much more.
Can I book a Deluxe Room as I have in the past?
No, I'm sorry. The Deluxe rooms are no more. Those rooms are the rooms that have been converted to DVC rooms.
Can you smell the animals from your room or the property?
No, nobody has ever complained about the smell of the animals. It is Disney Magic!
A post on the restaurant thread that said you can order room service delivered from Jiko -- has anyone tried this, and was the quality of the food just as good? Also, the rooms look a little on the small side...is there a comfortable place for 4 to dine in the room or on the balcony?
The quality of the food is the same in room service or going to the restaurant. I wouldn't there is a comfortable space for 4 to dine but there is enough room in the room for it.
Is there a better pool view room preference?
Pool view rooms are located in either Giraffe or Zebra Trail. Giraffe Trail has the advantage of not being very long, so you are never far away from the lobby. Also there is a direct access to the walkway to the busses. Zebra Trail has the pool on one side and Arusha Savannah on the other side. So when you walk down the hallway to your room you will pass windows from where you can see the Savannah. It might give you more of a feel of being surrounded by magic. Also there is a laundry room on Zebra Trail and Mara might be slightly closer, but it is not far from the Giraffe Trail rooms either.

Both Giraffe and Zebra Trail have elevators in the middle of the trail which can take you down to the first floor for direct access to the pool without having to pass the lobby.

regarding standard view rooms: most look out over the front of the resort, but some are very bad savanna views or pool views. So these "better" standard views are scattered around the resort, so you can't just ask for a certain location. I think the best would be to request a non-parking-lot-view. However, chances are not too great as most standard view rooms really are parking lot view.
What shampoo/conditioner products are supplied in the rooms at the AKL? I have sensitive skin but when we stayed at the Grand Californian at Disneyland last summer we had H2o products which I was OK with. Do they have these products at the AKL or the Mickey shaped bottle ones

No, they are wooden. Scotch tape works wonderful on them.
Transportation Questions
How easy or difficult is it to get to ADRs from AKL? I know some people complain about the distance to the other parks, etc. Do you rent a car or just schedule bussing into the schedule?
Getting to ADR's at the parks is a snap...transport is VERY efficient at AKL since you don't share the busses with any other resorts. Getting to ADR's at other resorts is not so efficient. But that's true for most resorts. You have to take a bus to the nearest park or to DTD, and then hop onto another bus to the "ADR" resort.
I was wondering about a certain aspect of the lodge-the bus stop, not so much the transportation itself, but the configuration of the stop. Is it a covered walkway all the way down to the buses? How far is from the entrance to the lobby? Are their separate "bays" for each park?
It is covered at the end but I vaguely remember being uncovered for the walk down. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) It is downhill to get there. there are benches to sit on but keep in mind that unless you are in the line when the bus pulls up, you may not make it on the bus in the morning. It is all one big waiting area so If one bus line is too long, you may be able to get on another park bus to go somewhere else. There are no bars or ropes to create a line which can sometimes be very chaotic. (Warning, you have to walk RIGHT THROUGH the smoking area!) Yes--you can still do that & avoid the smoke.
How long from time plane lands until we get to AKL if we are taking Magic Express bus ?
It varies, based on both when you visit (as in time of year...the busier it is, the longer it usually takes to check in through the ME counter), what time of day you land (morning tends to be busier than late afternoon), and somewhat luck of the draw (how many hotels are on your bus and which hotels they are). From a single poster, they have gotten here in 45 minutes and have gotten there in 1 hr and 45 minutes.
What time should we be at the bus stop in the am in order to make rope drop at the different parks on non EMH day during a peak attendence week??
I'd be at the bus stop about an hour and a half...maybe a bit more than that.... before the scheduled rope drop. AKL transport is especially efficient and you'll probably make it to the park about 20 to 25 min after you get on the bus, at most (that's MK). The question is "How long will you wait to get on the bus". You MAY get right on, in which case you'll be about an hour early (which is when the entrance plaza's usually open up) for rope drop. But you also may have to wait a bus or two, depending on how busy it is (back to time of year...you say peak, so....). So to ENSURE you're there before rope drop....the above suggestion is what I'd go with.
Restaurant Questions
What are you favorite things to eat at Mara, Boma and Jiko??
At Mara, we love the flatbread chicken pizza, the soups, and Zebra Domes. They used to have a peanut chicken "on a stick" (sauté, maybe) but I'm not sure they have it anymore.
At Boma's, we love the soups, the potatoes with affritude, the prime rib, the BBQ ribs (if you're there on the right night),any of the green salads with the mango vinaigrette dressing and, again, the zebra domes. Keep in mind, that's just a few favorites. The stuff on the buffet is so good it would take me volumes to write about everything we've enjoyed.
At Jiko's, pretty much everything on the menu is a winner, IMHO. We, again, liked the flatbreads, the filet mignon, the tanglewood chicken, and the halibut are all favorites...as is the pistachio crème brulee.
Does Mara also sell the mugs that are the generic resort mugs?
As of January 2009, they still had the generic YOAMD mugs in the Mara.
Does anyone know if there is a little convenience store on site that sells items like milk, bread and cereal now that part of the villas are open?
At Jambo House (the main lodge), Zawadi marketplace is now selling that sort of stuff. They've added a bank of coolers (milk, juice, soda, wine, beer), and some food items (exactly the ones you mention above, along with donuts, chips, etc) quite recently. Keep in mind, you'll be paying "Disney Prices".
I was told that the Zawadi Marketplace shop at the AKL has a nice selection of South African wines (by the bottle) that you can purchase. Hopefully someone can confirm!
They sell wine both at the Mara and in Zawadi marketplace. I think if you go to Victoria Falls, you can pick up a bottle there, too. Bring a corkscrew for your room if that's your intent or have them open it at the bar. I've heard they'll do that. I believe Room service might also deliver, but have not confirmed that.
Do I need to make ADRs for (early) Boma breakfast in Feb??
yes, you need to make ADR's no matter what time you want to eat there. Early or not. ADR's are reccomended for most sit down restaraunts.
Concierge Questions
Is a concierge room (not on the lounge level) worth it?
Just the access to booking the sunrise safari makes it worth it for most people who stay there. It makes breakfast so easy to do and free! Also great snacks throughout the day and we had cans of soda to take back to the room for later.
if you book a standard concierge room will it just be a standard room with access to the concierge lounge?
The rooms ARE specific to concierge.....it's not like you just get any room in the house and, on top of that, they give you access to concierge services and the lounge. The specific block of rooms are dedicated concierge rooms, in a specifc "block" on the 4th floor. But they're set up just like, and are the same size as, a standard AKL room. I think they might have better robes in them (can't remember) and they all get nightly turndown service (unless you request otherwise) but other than that...not much difference.
The real differences are in the services you'll get (as mentioned, turndown...but you also have full access to the IPO staff who, IMHO, are the best IPO/concierge on property), the access to the lounge AND access to the Sunrise Safari (which is almost worth the extra $$ per night by itself, IMHO).
We are staying on club level for the first time ever- the robes in the rooms- are they for keeps or just on loan?
They are on loan. If you really want a robe to take home for a souvenir, they do sell them in the Zawadi Marketplace. The one's in the marketplace have the logo on them but the ones in the room do not.
If you book standard concierge, are you guaranteed a savanna view?
Now that the DVC has taken over a few floors in AKL, all standard concierge rooms are savannah view.
Are standard concierge rooms on a different floor than the lounge? What floor(s) are the rooms on? In practice, does this work OK?
There are some concierge rooms on other floors. It works with no problem so long as you remember your room key each time you go out since you cannot get upstairs in the elevator without it. Yes, on a different floor, but it has always been that way, to a certain extent. Lounge is on 6th floor. In the past Club Level rooms were on 5th & 6th. Now, non-DVC Club Level rooms are on 4th; DVC CL rooms on the 6th floor.
We've been know to eat a big lunch out, and snack for supper. Would the evening offerings do for that on occasion?
I didn't think that the evening offering were enough if you want to eat a lot. It was great for a small meal or snacks and then fill up on desserts.
Are wines available in the evening? Particular hours?
Wines are avaiable in the evening. Hours of each offering are stated above.
If staying at concierge level, can you get ADRs just a few weeks before arrival? There are a couple that I have not been able to book myself, but would concierge be able to do that for us?
You can ask but there are no "magic spaces" being help for concierge guests. I would reccomend faxing or e-mailing concierge staf ASAP so that they can start trying for the ADR's you want.
That being said, I was able to change my Cindy's ADR the day before to a different time. They were great. Magical things can happen but not guaranteed.
When can you expect to be back at AKL from the sunrise safari?
After the sunrise Safari, you will have breakfast in AK and then it will take you as long as it takes you to get out of the park and grab/wait for a bus. Could be 30 minutes could be over an hour.
How is the CL staff?
They are very helpful and accomodating. Be sure to bring the kids when you check in since they may have a little surprise for them and they can snack while you talk to the staff.

The lounge rooms are all savannah view and are on Arush Savannah.
I understand that the sunrise safari is hosted on Thursday and Sunday mornings. It is only for concierge guest staying at AKL. If I book Saturday night at AKL concierge can I book the sunrise safari for that Sunday am?
OK -I did this last Jan.
We checked in on Wed. morning and enjoyed the AKL and briefly went to a park in the eve.
Next morning before we went to meet Safari group we had the Bell Services come pick up our luggage and advised them that we were moving over to WL. Luggage was taken over there sometime during the day. We enjoyed the day at AK and when we checked in at WL about 5:00pm they brought our luggage up to us.
How hard was it to book the sunrise safari? Did you book it at 180 days out after you made your reservation for AKL conceirge?
I made all my reservations at about the 90 day mark last year.

However, if I remember correctly, the start times of some activities vary with sunset (especially the story telling).
The activities are free, I think for some you have to pay for the materials that are used, like the craft sessions.
What are the chances of getting to do the sunrise safari and not being on the club level?
None ! You can book the Wanyama (Sunset) Safari if you're an AKL guest (non-CL level) for $210/pp, but the Sunrise Safari is open to CL guests only.
what is the "bead activity" and what ages?
The bead activities are for any ages. You stay with your children and they are all different. Once you complete an activity you receive a bead for a necklace, or keychain sort of thing. They give you a string to put a bead on and you get a different bead for each activity. One of them was like a bingo came called Bongo and it had animals on the card instead of numbers.
what time and days does the resort do the story telling around the firepit?
Unless things have changed...every day at "dusk". They put the specific time on the events list and the bulletin board, but it changes with the season.
Can guests just visiting the lodge to eat or look around take part in any of the offerings,like storytime,etc?
I believe anyone that is there can take part in the activities unless it is written for resort guests only. Maybe someone who has done them can help me?
Shopping Questions
Can someone tell me some of the AKL specific merchandise you can buy in the gift shop?
They did have AKL coffee mugs & I think travel mugs too (in the gift shop, not the refillable kind). Several styles of AKL t-shirts for adults & kids (I got one for me). AKL frame, magnet, small notebook. AKL art prints. Hmmm, what else? Not AKL, but they had South African wines by the bottle at very reasonable prices. & of course the other African stuff like instruments, carvings, etc.
Can anybody tell me what kind of beer and wine selection my in-laws can expect at Zawadi Marketplace? Also, do you have any idea what price range they should expect?

is there a floor that gives the best view of the Savannah as a whole.
We had requested 3rd floor, Zebra Trail, Arusha Savannah, and that's right where they put us. The view was just about perfect, and what made it even better was that we were on the same floor as the lobby ... a 30-second stroll out our door and we were right there.
Does anyone know how people can send us mail/packages while we are at the AKL? We have a very common last name so I do not want the mail or packages to go to the wrong room.
IMPORTANT: From March 2007 - April 2009 Construction will be taking place at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in preparation for the Animal Kingdom Lodge Villas. The early phases include construction in the main building.
In June 2007, some guests have been called and offered to move to Saratoga Springs due to noise concerns. DVC members who have reservered the villas in the main building have been told to expect construction noise during the day and some evening hours.
