Hey all. Looking for this recipe. Any way it can be (semi) healthy? (maybe something called healthy tater tot casserole is an oxymoron?!! :lmao: ) TIA

Here are 568 recipes for you :) ...http://www.cooks.com/rec/search/0,1-0,tater_tot_casserole,FF.html

This is the recipe from the Duggar family (on the TLC show). Looks like it could feed an army.

3 2lb bags tater tots
2 cans cream of mushroom
2 cans evaporated milk
2 cans cream of chicken
Brown meat & place in large cass. dish.
Cover with tater tots. Mix soup & milk together.
Pour over top. Bake at 350 for 1 Hour.
(One of Daddy’s Favorites!) Makes 2- 9”X13” pans

add 1 can cream mushroom soup. ablock of cheddar cheese (cut up) mix and put bread crumbs on top  man I really love it. I cant eat it anymore because I end up makeing it 3x a week and gaining 10 lbs

We just had this yesterday!

1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 cup sour cream
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup shreaded cheese
1 bag tator tots

Brown meat. Put into a dish (we use like 10 x 10 or so). Mix sour cream and soup. Put on top of meat. Put cheese on next. Pour one bag of tots on top.

bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes

The person that gave me the recipe lines the tots up perfectly.. I find it tastes just as good to dump (this drives her crazy even thinking about it! :rotfl2: ). She also uses two cans of soup, no sour cream, mixing up what kind of soup. You can also use like nacho cheese soup, and add taco seasoning to the meat for a more mexican variety. The options are endless.

Enjoy!

edit: I didn't notice you wanted healthy. I would go for low fat soups, no sour cream, perhaps part skim mozzeralla cheese rather than cheddar. 1/2 the amount of tots (lining them up neatly will do this.. cause you to use less). I always use turkey, because it's cheap at Aldi.. that might be healthier than beef, not sure.

Thank you all! I've never tried this before, but it sounds yummy (and budget friendly!;) ) I know my family will love it! :)

Can I just say that that sounds absolutely gross to me. I can't believe that gook would actually taste good. And how many calories are in that thing?

Oh my, it is comfort food at its finest!

I do eat VERY light the rest of the day, if I know this is for dinner. I've never added up the calories.. I'm in denial. We have it about once a month at the most. 99% of what we eat is vegetarian, we eat this on "meat" night. the kids can't get enough of it.

I make mine with ground beef, or you could use ground turkey. Brown about 1 or 1 and a half pound with a little chopped onion (1 medium). In a 9x13 pan, put in 2 cans of italian tomato soup. If you can't find that you can use regular tomato and add some italian seasoning , oregano, garlice powder. mix in beef. top with shredded mozarella cheese and a bag of tater tots. Cook at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes until tots are crispy looking.

Seems a little harsh:confused3 someone might get offended...just a thought:snooty:

It does seem harsh. I wouldn't want someone saying my dinner sounds gross.

If you want to have it on "meatLESS" nights, just use ground meatless or another soy substitute. My family can't tell the difference in spaghetti sauce and other casseroles (I've never fixed this particular recipe.)

Well, I think it sounds yummy! And who cares about calories, if its only enjoyed every now and then? :confused3 Can't wait to try it!

There used to be this lady who would bring the tator tot casserole every month to our church potluck. Funny thing was nobody in her family liked it nor did anybody at church, she only brought it because it was easy to make and ended up taking most of it back home with her. She no longer attends and nobody misses the tator tot casserole :rotfl2:

You would definately file this one under "Tastes better than it looks". If you can get past how it looks it actually tastes good. I think this would be a hard recipe to lighten up since the base of it is cream soup, cheese and potato.

Our recipe is:
1lb+ of ground beef, seasoned with a little garlic pwdr.
one can cr. of mushroom
one can cr. of chix
one bag of peas and carrots, thawed
one bag of tater tots, baked
slices of american cheese

we use the tater tots as the base, cover with soup, beef and veggie mix, then cover with slices of cheese. Very good, although we used to refer to it as Vomit casserole.

The versions I've always had have been very cheesy and sourcreamy, plus have had little smokies in them as the meat and cornflakes on top. I haven't ever made it, but man, it's yummy. One of those great foods that is insanely bad for you.

Oh, here's a recipe similar to what I've had: tater tot casserole

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh. I have never tried it, so I don't know if it is gross, but the ingredients do not sound very appetizing. Is that better? I don't want to offend anyone.

Sorry, but I don't think I would care for this either. It's a recipe that has been around for ages and I'm sure loved by many. I think I would prefer it deconstructed! Make a meatloaf out of the meat, serve the tots on the side with the veggies, with a nice bowl of cream of whatever soup!:cool1:
