Target - seasonal returns?

I saw a sign in Target last week - something to the effect of, if you purchase a "seasonal" item and it is on clearance when you return it, it will be refunded at the current clearance price?! That covers darn near everything in the store!

Maybe I misread it, and maybe it is if you are returning without a receipt, but I thought receipts were required for all Target returns now? So why wouldn't you get back your purchase price, especially if the item was defective!

That store is really getting snotty about returns now - no reciept, no return, and receipts expire 90 days after purchase. Seems like someone is getting too big for their britches... who do they think they are, Saks or something?!

I saw that too in my local Target while I was waiting in line to return things.

I thought it was a new 'law'.

"Seasonal" refers to holiday merchandise, i.e. Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc. or true summer/winter items like pool toys, sleds and so on.

I won't say I agree with Target's return policy, but having worked in the retail environment for almost 15 years I can't say I blame them. By placing limits it on returns Target is protecting their profits. Returns cost money, unless the manufacturer supports the retailer monetarily for damage or defect, returns work against the bottom line.

I would guess that policy would also apply to clothing - some food items, some decor items, as well.

Wow - so I buy a pre-lit tree in October, the lights stop working in early December, I take it back with my receipt and get retail - 30% or whatever their clearance is!

I doubt it. If your merchandise is defective I'm sure that they will replace it.

I have to say I do think that this is a fair policy. Seasonal items can't really be restocked. If you return it they can only be sold at a deep discount. You buying, then holding on to it and returning it until it starts getting clearanced means that the store didn't have the opportunity to sell it at the full price. Clearanced items are clearanced for a reason. :confused3

:confused3 I don't buy anything I think i might have to return, our local target store is awful.......mostly i just shop the dollar spot which has turned into the 2.50 or 2 for 5 spot and the markdown's.
