Super Walmart shutting down ALL self checkouts...

Well the Super Walmart in my area that went full self-checkout a mere two or three years ago has completely removed them all and went back to regular checkout in what felt like practically overnight. What a nightmare, I forgot what it was like to have to wait forever in line at Walmart. Not happy!!

What city?

I had not seen any closed off until I stopped at the Walmart in Orlando on Turkey Lake Road last week, it was super annoying and the lines were all much longer than they need to be. I felt bad for the staff. I do prefer to scan my own stuff because I skeeve other people touching my things and avoid it when I can.

I hope mine doesn't go away. I prefer to bag up my own items so if anything gets crushed or ruined, it's my own fault.

It must depend on the area. They keep adding more and more self checkouts to my walmart, and truthfully, I don't see how they could remove ALL of them as they need some for the Walmart+ delivery people to scan orders, and those that use Scan and Go.

I hate everything about those checkouts. I hate that it replaces a human being trying to support themselves or their family. I hate that Walmart makes me do their job for no pay and no benefit whatsoever. I hate that it kills my back due to the strange way you have to stand to retrieve the items from your cart. I hate the cheapness of the plastic bags and the difficulty in separating them. I hate that half the time they freeze up and require someone to come, when they can get to you, to fix the problem. Other than that I think they are wonderful.

The issue I see locally with self checks is how frequently they break down. About a month ago I was in my local chain grocery store on a Sunday morning and they have one person running a checkout, and they also have to monitor the 4 self checks. All 4 self checks were down, and he was so busy checking people out, he didn't have time to try and fix them.

We still had to bag all of our items. The cashier just scanned everything and pushed the items to the end so we could bag them.

The reason I noticed it took longer was because people would talk to the cashier and ask questions. He'd have to stop and answer them. (When you scan your own, you only get to ask questions if the machine has a problem. Or you'd go ask an employee separate from scanning.)

Then he FOLDED all the clothes after scanning. :badpc: (He should have simply pushed that off to the end and let us deal with it.)

He also waited until we bagged and removed all our items. (It may be common courtesy to do that. But most places I've been to, we just corral all our items to one area at the end when there is that counter area. The next person makes sure their stuff stays separate after they have been scanned.)

Say all of this takes an extra 2 minutes per customer. There was 10 people in line ahead of me. That added on an extra, unnecessary 20 minutes to my wait time. I was in line for 40 minutes. I was one line out of 25, all of us having to wait that extra time.

My time is worth something to me. I am not getting a discount for standing in line an extra 20 minutes now that they've put back a cashier vs. when I did my own scanning. (See last paragraph right above.)

At my store I use the Scan and Go option. Everything is bagged up before I get to the self check, and I just have to scan my phone.

I don't mind self check out as long as there are enough employees to attend to all the open registers.
I remember way back ( at least 20+ yrs) when Walmart first started selling groceries and suddenly, I was in line behind people with a full cart of groceries and I have 2 bottles of shampoo and some laundry detergents and dryer sheets.

Our walmart added a lot more self check out areas to our store last winter. They put in a lot of the ones with lots of space for your groceries to be bagged. I love using them because they are never full and it's quick. I also can carefully bag the items that I dont' want crushed.

Then don't use them! Who is making you do it? Some of us love self check out, we can get out quickly. I rarely shop at Walmart, maybe 4 times a year, but my local one still has self-checkout and I only bought 2 things, always use my own bag, and was even able to scan my printed gift cards' bar code (free with AARP rewards points). Those $10 in gift cards was the only reason I was there.

I don't think we even have that option here. 😲

I read a news article a month or so ago that one of the reasons Walmart and Target are moving back to manned checkouts is because there is so much shoplifting/stealing at the registers. Some items really don't get scanned properly when people are honestly scanning them and they get put in the shopping bag anyway. Some other people are outright stealing by simply pretending to scan items and dropping them into their bags.

Both Walmart and Target have put in more extensive cameras, but they've found, so what if a camera captures an item being stolen? A human still has to stop the person and make them (re)scan the item. The only way to successfully stop shoplifting/stealing is to have human cashiers scan every item. So, now, cashiers are back and replacing the self checkouts.

I was told again last week that our Super Walmart is NOT shutting them down. Maybe it's regional?

Maybe it depends on how much stealing is happening at your local Walmart?

It is part of WalMart+ add on ap, also get 10 to 20 cents off per gallon (depending upon the season) at Murphy stations, and free Paramount+ And it includes free shipping on all orders from Walmart.com AND free home delivery for grocery orders. Sort of like an Amazon Prime thing with a similar price, but you can often catch it for 1/2 price on the ap.

I think I made it clear that I don't use them and gave all the reasons why. I didn't say pull them out. They should stay for those that enjoy paying higher prices for groceries and then working for the store with no compensation to pay them so you can take it with you. By all means, if that is your thing feel free to continue. I just will not be joining in. For just a couple items it is the wise thing to do. However, I have seen lines 10 times longer waiting to use the machines. On the downside, they could have fixed that small number of items problem if they had just enforced the Limited 20 items registers. They have so few service registers operational these days that it is not occasionally, but regularly the situation where someone has to go through multiple credit cards to find one with an actually usable balance.

I don’t shop at Walmart, but 1 of our grocery chains has this option too. I absolutely love it. I can bag my items as I want them. And don’t have to stand in line for any length of time with a stranger standing inches behind breathing down my neck.

And why is it the fault of any store or scanning method if customers have no idea what their credit card limits are or which ones they can use??? Self scan or 20 registers open has nothing to do with or solve that issue. Also, scanning my own items does not make me a store employee. Anymore than using mobile order at WDW makes me a Disney employee. :rolleyes2

Half the fun of vacationing in CT was going to Walmart; the closest one to the city is probably in NJ.

Look! Coleman products next aisle over from remote control cars!

Not sure if I’ve ever seen a Super Walmart.

Walmart near my business, Kearny NJ. A few years ago switched to basically all self check out. Then in the past couple months took out every single self check station and added a ton of full service. Also, a lot of stuff is locked behind glass now. Can't imagine why.....
