We love a good steak. Sometimes the steak is great, many times it is not. I have started buying my steaks at Target. They sell the Sutton and Dodge Steakhouse Quality choice Angus Beef. Let me say, these steaks ROCK!.

I know, I know, this is the budget board and these steaks are certainly not a low budget item. But I would rather skip steak a time and get a great steak every time. Sometimes they have a sticker on them reducing them due to exp date issues (but they usually have several days left). And today they had T-Bone steaks for $5.99 a pound. They were delicious. I have yet to buy a steak from them that was not delicous.

I usually buy steak there with stickers (I rarely buy without anymore). I didn't realize it was due to the date, but I freeze or use immediately anyway.

If I buy other steaks, I tend to buy them at Publix or somewhere where they aren't pre-packaged.

Target has a lot of great products. And if you have a Super Target in your area, you can get coupons online, they switch them every couple of weeks. Sometimes you can get real bargains that way.

ITA :thumbsup2 the T-bones from Target are better than anywhere else around here!

Wonder if they are still on sale? I usually stock up when they are.

Have you tried Costco? IMHO their's is even better at a similar price. However they're typically packaged 3 or 4 per not individually.

Why don't you check with a local beef farmer in your area. We sell our cows as small a 1/4 and we only charge $1.50 per pound. That includes all cuts of meat including steaks. As long as you have a freezer that will hold it, it is really your best meat and best quality. We only feed our cows grains that we grow ourselves. You cannot get fresher than that.

another vote for Costco.I work in a staekhouse and i like their steakss better. shh!!!!!

I really like the steaks at Costco too...better than Targets IMHO. The target steaks are decent as well. I usually check for the ones that have the coupons on them and my SuperTarget usually has sutton and dodge coupons as well. I just got one the other day for $2.00 off :teeth:

Sadly, they are not. The NY strip is on sale at $6.99/lb.

Not in several years. I have bought at Sams and BJs, and not very impressed with either. I think the Target advantage is that it is Angus and Steakhouse quality as opposed to Sams which is just Choice and BJs which I have seen at Choice and even Select (really irritates me!)

To quote Ricky Ricardo, "splain please". How do we know that the beef will taste wonderful? Not trying to be a wise gal, but if I am going to buy 1/4 of a cow I want to be sure it will be wonderful!! :thumbsup2 And how do you get it cut up? Does the beef farmer include that in the price, or is it over and above the $1.50 per pound? I have the freezer space, and it sounds intriguing. Thanks!

Yep! We buy out meet 1/4 steer and 1/2 pig at a time and it just can't be beat for taste, cost, convenience, freshness, economic value and environmental correctness. I can't imagine that I'll ever go back to shrink-wrapped abominations - I'm even scoping out locally-raised chickens right now.

I agree. That is where I buy my steaks from. I love their steaks especially their flank steaks!

No Costco's around here unfortunately. I've tried them from Sam's but didn't think much of it.

I don't know if there is any place around here to buy beef in bulk like that. My MIL used to do that in WV but I've never heard of any of my FL family doing it.

Too bad I missed the Target sale, it figures, I purposely avoided Target this weekend becuase I was trying to be good with money :)

I'm kind of scared of Target beef after I saw this report about their hamburger on the local news :confused3 :

Central Florida Target grocery stores are selling ground beef with an invisible extra that may be fooling unsuspecting shoppers, according to a Problem Solvers investigation.

The controversial ingredient is not listed on the label but popular Central Florida stores are selling it.

Local 6 News reported that the "extra" is called modified atmosphere, which is a mixture of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and a small amount of carbon monoxide.

"The carbon monoxide enhances the red pigment giving the beef 'shelf appeal,'" Local 6 reporter Mike Holfeld said.

Dr. Hordu Kristinsson of the University of Florida co-authored a book on modified atmosphere and was featured in the report.

His research showed that the meat is perfectly safe but he admitted that what you see might not be what you get, Holfeld said.

"I can say this, that you could buy beef that still looks red but could be spoiled," Kristinsson said.

"What's the intent of putting this stuff?" Holfeld asked.

"Mainly, prolong the red color," Kristinsson said.

"You're prolonging the look?" Holfeld said.

"You're prolonging the look," Kristinsson said.

"So, it appears fresh?" Holfeld said.

"Yes," Kristinsson said.

Local 6 News showed video of case-ready beef packaged with carbon monoxide inoculated with salmonella and then showed that it looked OK eight days later.

The report then showed video of beef not packaged with carbon monoxide that looked brown.

Both the United States Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration said the process is "generally regarded as safe," Holfeld said.

The report also showed ground beef purchased in the middle of March with a sell-by date of March 30 that looked red in May.

Still, supermarkets such as Publix have rejected the modified atmosphere products.

A Publix spokeswoman told Local 6 News, "Because we adhere to strict quality standards, we will never sell modified atmospheric case-ready beef. Our beef is ground fresh daily."

In Chicago, the City Council is considering a resolution that would ban the sale of case-ready beef packed in carbon monoxide.

The report also showed ground beef purchased in the middle of March with a sell-by date of March 30. Nearly a month later, the beef was still cherry red, Local 6 News reported.

A representative for Target stores told Local 6 News that the beef was safe.

"Target has high food-quality standards," the representative said. "Meat packaged in this manner is manufactured in USDA-inspected facilities."

The Local 6 News investigation has already caught the attention of Orange County officials.

Commissioner Linda Stewart has asked key county staff to review the Chicago ordinance and the possibility of action in Orange County.

The commissioner co-hosted a community meeting with Local 6 on this very issue, Holfeld said.

Rmeember, Target.com has coupons on their website sometimes for the Suddot and Doge meats.

Re: that article...this makes me wonder. I accidentaly left a lb of hamburger in the frig for two weeks which I bought from Target It still was a bright red color. I threw it out anway.

herc.

Interesting article Seahunt. Now that I think about it, the packages of steak do have a puff of air around them. And they do look fabulously red for a long time. But I always sniff beef (or any meat for that matter) prior to cooking it.

The steaks are so good, I think I will not get excited about this, but I will certainly keep it in mind when I open their packages.

Thank you for posting this. :thumbsup2
